Start by ascending to new heights at Pikes Peak, otherwise known as America’s Mountain. Feel free to take the Pikes Peak Cog Railway to the top or do an intense, 12.5 mile hike (one way) to the summit of one of the best 14ers near Denver. 

Next, do an easy hike along the Palmer Trail at the one and only Garden of the Gods. It’s one of the best hikes in Colorado and is an easy, 4-mile loop hike to all of the area’s most awe-inspiring red rock formations. 

Afterward, attend a world-class show at Theatreworks before enjoying the Colorado Springs vibrant nightlife along Tejon Street, between Pikes Peak Avenue and Kiowa Street. Local faves include martinis at Blondie’s, line dancing at Cowboys, and admiring the views, around a roaring fire, from the roof of Gasoline Alley.

If you want, you can also pamper yourself with a selection of premium spa treatments, like massages and facials, at Garden of the Gods Club and Resort before heading out to Seven Falls. 

Seven Falls is an awe-inspiring local waterfall that can be reached as you drive through the “Grandest Mile of Scenery” before reaching the base of the waterfall. You’ll then park here and climb 224 steps to get a closer look at this amazing waterfall before embarking on a nice hike through the area. Fort Lauderdale, Florida, once a haven for spring break partiers, is now a great place for couples, families, and of course, a girls trip. With miles of beaches and warm weather, this US girls trip destination makes a great place to get away with your friends.

Make sure to book Ft. Lauderdale lodging right on the beachfront. Then you will have a picturesque view of the sun rising above the ocean and won’t have to lug your beach gear very far. By staying on the beach you will have numerous bars and restaurants to explore all within walking distance. 

When you get bored relaxing on sandy beaches (is that even possible!) and catching up with your friends, take the free water taxi to bar hop. Or for a luxury boat ride, you can charter a yacht to take you cruising along the Intracoastal waterway. This is a great way to hang out with your girls while viewing amazing scenery and gorgeous mansions.

If you and your girlfriends enjoy the beach, great food, and gorgeous historic homes—you’ll likely discover that Newport, Rhode Island, is the perfect place for a girl’s trip! 

Newport, Rhode Island, is just an 80-mile drive from the Boston Logan International Airport. Once you arrive, you can get started exploring all the best things to do in Newport, RI. You can take a stroll along the scenic Cliff Walk, get some sun at Easton Beach, go shopping at the local boutiques on Thames Street or Bellevue Avenue, or tour one of the Newport Mansions. Toronto is among the best destinations for a girl’s trip because it is home to friendly people, easy-going vibes, lots of unique attractions, a ton of green space to explore, and a diverse culinary scene.

One of the best things to do in Toronto is to visit the CN Tower. Standing at 553 meters, it dominates the city’s skyline. You can take the elevator up to the main lookout level and enjoy the panoramic city views. It also has a revolving restaurant that offers both incredible food and incredible views.

If you and your friends love shopping, then head right to the Eaton Center. It spans two city blocks, boasts over 250 retail stores, and holds the title of the busiest mall in North America.

Then, be sure to grab a bite at St. Lawrence Market. There are more than 120 local vendors here in this historic market. They sell everything from fresh produce and seafood to baked goods, spices, and specialty items, so there’s something for everyone.

Orlando, Florida

Orlando is just for family vacations, right? Wrong! Seventy-six million people visit Orlando every year, including couples, groups, and besties. Who doesn’t love sunshine, fun resorts with swimming pools and parks packed with rides? That’s why I’m recommending Orlando as an amazing girls trip destination.

The most popular attractions in Orlando include Walt Disney World, Universal Studios and things to do on International Drive*, which runs between the two theme park resorts. 

Walt Disney World is split into four parks and two waterparks, so you can literally spend your whole vacation watching the Disney Parade, losing your stomach to the Tower of Terror, traveling around the world at EPCOT and going on a safari. 

If your time is limited to a long weekend, dedicate a day to Disney, another to Universal (fierce rides and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter) and dine at Disney Springs or I-Drive. If visiting during the low season, such as January, you can get around the parks a few times a day using dedicated line skips which are worth investing in all year round.

Other activities include tanning by the resort pool, dining on I-Drive, which caters for every style of meal from fine dining (Jack’s Place) to casual cocktails (The Hampton Social), shopping at Disney Springs (Fabletics and MAC), parachuting without a plane at iFly and crazy golf. 

Note: The stretch between Walt Disney and Universal Studios is 8 miles, so don’t underestimate the need for transport. Once you’ve decided which activities the girls want to do, choose a hotel resort closest to most attractions and/or make sure the hotel offers bus services to parks or that the Uber cost is affordable. Also, most hotels add a resort fee to the overall price.

One of the best places for a girls’ trip in Hawaii is the island of Maui because there are so many memory-making opportunities. You can head up to Haleakala Crater in the middle of the night to see an epic sunrise that some people say is a religious experience.

The hiking trails vary in difficulty, but there are options for everyone. Each hike will take you to impressive panoramas; Devils Bridge is one of the most well-known. If the girls are looking for a thrill, take an off-road jeep tour that will keep you on the edge of your seat, or soar high in the sky for a bird’s eye view of the majestic beauty below. Los Angeles is easily one of the best places to go for the ultimate girl’s trip! From great brunch spots, hiking, Disney, and beach days, there are tons to do in the City of Angels!

To start it off, a girl’s trip won’t be complete without taking a hike to the iconic Hollywood Sign on your Los Angeles itinerary. The hike starts by Giffith Observatory, another top place to see in LA. From here, you can enjoy an epic sunset with a view of downtown LA. Moab, Utah

Are you looking for an excellent girls trip destination? You absolutely must check out Moab, Utah! Most would rather go on a girls vacation to places like New York City or Las Vegas, but Moab is completely underrated. It’s an outdoor lover’s paradise, perfect for those who want to explore the wilderness and go on hikes during their vacation.

There’s so much to do in Moab. The most popular thing to do is visit Arches National Park, one of the most popular national parks in the country. It’s only a short drive from downtown, but try to get there bright and early to avoid the heat. In the park, you can hike to Delicate Arch, Double Arch, the Windows, and even through Park Avenue. There are also easy hikes in Arches too. Don’t forget to do the scenic drive!

Another great place to visit around Moab is Canyonlands National Park, which most people tend to overlook because of Arches. However, Canyonlands is truly a hidden gem in the National Park Service. In Canyonlands, the best place to visit is the Island in the Sky district. There, you can hike to False Kiva or Mesa Arch; two gorgeous spots! On your drive to Canyonlands, you can also pull off at Dead Horse Point State Park.

Virginia Beach, VA

Virginia Beach is a great girls trip destination on the East Coast—and here’s why! There is so much to do within walking distance of the beach, but also lots of space to relax with friends. Virginia Beach has 28 miles of beautiful sandy beaches to explore, lots of great restaurants, and plenty of unique activities. 

I recently went on a girls’ trip of all working moms to Virginia Beach and it could not have been better! We stayed in a vacation rental one block from the Boardwalk and Beach. We walked to some great local restaurants and could also order in with lots of delivery options in the area. I especially recommend Commune for brunch with lots of gluten-free options. There are also many great boardwalk hotels to choose from at all different price points from high-end to family-friendly. 

Virginia Beach is the largest city in the state and has so much to do beyond the beach. You can rent a surrey bike (the largest fits 8—ideal for a girls trip group) and bike along the 3-mile-long boardwalk, enjoy a boat ride on the Atlantic, check out one of 10 local spas or go hiking in nearby state parks. Banff, Canada

Whether you are looking for a trip full of outdoor adventures or looking for time to relax, Banff is the ideal place for a girls trip. There’s plenty to do in Banff National Park to fill a weekend or even a week.

To get the most out of a visit to Banff, hit the must-visit places like Lake Louise, Moraine Lake and a hike to Johnston Canyon. While visiting Lake Louise and Moraine Lake, leave some time to take in one of the stunning hikes in the area. From Lake Louise, hike to the Lake Agnes teahouse or the Plain of Six Glaciers teahouse. From Moraine Lake, a hike to Sentinel Pass offers incredible views.

Joshua Tree, California

For the girls who want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and have a more peaceful retreat amongst nature, it doesn’t get much better than Joshua Tree, California. 

Start off by choosing a zen boho AirBnB or our pick, a luxurious glamping yurt that has a nice hot tub to soak under the tranquil dark sky of Joshua Tree.

During the day, head out on an epic adventure inside Joshua Tree National Park. Our top sites to see are the “teddy bear” cacti at the Cholla Cactus Garden, especially for sunrise or sunset when the cacti needles appear to be glowing. Next, go for a hike in the Wonderland of Rocks to witness endless rows of Joshua Trees surrounded by the huge oddly shaped boulders that you don’t get to see anywhere else.

Located on Mexico’s Caribbean coast, Playa del Carmen is the perfect destination for a tropical girls getaway. Originally a small fishing village, Playa del Carmen is now a vibrant beach town and one of the most visited tourist destinations in Mexico. With tropical white sand beaches, a lively downtown area, and tons of tours and activities, Playa del Carmen is a fun girls trip destination for a relaxing vacation or adventurous retreat.  

The town is centered around Fifth Avenue (“La Quinta Avenida” in Spanish), which is a vibrant pedestrian-only street that spans for more than 20 blocks, and where you’ll find the majority of restaurants, bars, nightlife, and shopping. Fifth Avenue is a great location to be at the center of the town’s nightlife and the many open-air nightclubs offer a fun night out for dancing with girlfriends.

Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica

Costa Rica is one of the most beautiful countries in the world and, in my opinion, the safest country in Central America. These are just a few reasons that make it a great location for a girl’s trip in 2022.

Despite its small size, with its vast landscapes, diverse wildlife, stunning beaches, friendly people, and good food, Cost Rica has something for every taste. There are many areas to consider when vacationing in Costa Rica but Manuel Antonio makes a great destination for a girl’s trip especially if you have a long weekend to explore. 

The national park in Manuel Antonio is loaded with beautiful beaches, active wildlife, and stunning sunsets. (Watch out for the naughty monkeys: They love to steal food!)

Manuel Antonio is only a few hours away from San Jose Airport and 4 miles north of the small but lively town of Quepos, where you can plan a fun night out. Stay in a cozy beach bungalow overlooking the beach at Hotel Costa Verde or opt for a luxury experience at Arenas del Mar. There are plenty of pristine beaches to relax at and top-rated full-service spas.

If you are looking for adventure, the Nauyaca Waterfall hike is less than an hour away. Sportfishing, horseback riding, ziplining, and waterfall rappelling are also popular activities in this area.

The Greek island of Milos is the perfect destination for a girls trip. If you and your friends enjoy off the beaten track destinations and love exploring beautiful nature, this Greek island is for you! Milos is a lesser-known Cycladic island with a lot of charm and plenty of fun things to do!

One of the best places to stay in Milos is the island’s biggest town Adamas. The town has excellent accommodation options, good restaurants and nightlife. Visit the epic Serakiniko Beach with its peculiar landscape resembling the moon. Andalucia, Spain

The region of Andalucia in southern Spain is a great place for a girls trip. For a start, the weather is glorious pretty much all year round, it’s incredibly safe and there is so much to see, from stunning historical cities such as Cordoba, Seville and Granada as well as beautiful beaches. If you prefer to get away from the crowds, Andalucia is also home to some pretty impressive national parks. 

The best way to get a flavor of the region is by planning a road trip in Andalucia. Driving in Spain is easy, the roads are well maintained, and rental cars are available from all major cities. 

If you’re most interested in beaches, then a great route is from Malaga to Cadiz. Enjoy the beaches in and around Malaga, before heading south, stop off in Marbella (the historical centre is adorable). Keep following the coast down – if you have time, do a day trip into Gibraltar – before hitting Tarifa, which is known for wind sports, and then to Bolonia beach to see the giant sand dunes. Continue along the coast, ending up in the ancient city of Cadiz.

If you prefer UNESCO landmarks, then a great option is to start in Seville and enjoy the Alcazar, Bario Santa Cruz and the Cathedral. From here head towards Cordoba to visit the visually stunning Mezquita, the mosque-cathedral. From here continue on to Granada, where you will find the Alhambra. Ideally, you’ll want to spend a couple of days at each location. 

If you have the time, then you can do both of these mini-itineraries as a loop over a couple of weeks.

Each of New York’s many (and overlapping) neighborhoods has its own personality, its own flair. The Lower East Side (LES) is no different.

You can find some of the best street art in NYC in this part of Manhattan. In fact, the Lower East Side has one of the highest concentrations of murals and graffiti in all of New York City!

(Read all about another one of the mural hotspots, Bushwick in Brooklyn, in my post!)

So the next time you’re looking for things to do in New York City, don’t sleep on the Lower East Side. The murals here are world-class. You’ll find street art on just about every block.

That’s my favorite way to experience graffiti: discovering each example of street art as you wander the neighborhood.

Things to do – Lower East Side

There are so many great things to do in the Lower East Side. This New York neighborhood is practically synonymous with immigrants, leading to a rich tapestry of cultures and backgrounds. Different immigrant groups have put down roots here, from the Irish and Eastern European Jews to the Chinese and Puerto Ricans.

Some of these identities are reflected in Lower East Side graffiti and street art you can see across the neighborhood.

Like many New York City neighborhoods, the Lower East Side is incredibly walkable. You can wander all over this area and stumble upon murals on nearly every block.

What’s special about Lower East Side graffiti?

I personally think that any concentration of world-class street art is special, no matter the neighborhood. The Lower East Side is certainly no exception.

Lower East Side graffiti is incredibly diverse in style, content, point of view and even size. Some murals cover enormously tall buildings, rising maybe 10 stories into the New York sky. Others are small, left in a nook in an alleyway or on a night club door.

Like a lot of street art, Lower East Side graffiti can be political. Murals are public art and inherently more accessible than artwork in, for example, one of New York City’s museums. Many artists who paint on walls—with permission or without—are counterculture.

That means that quite a lot of street art takes a strong stance on political or social issues. One of my favorite Lower East Side murals depicts George Floyd in beautiful brushstrokes of color. To me, this street art portrait says that while George Floyd’s murder was a brutal injustice, he as a person was a beautiful human with a vibrant life.

Where to find murals in LES, NYC (including lots of photos!)

First off, if you’re not already familiar, LES stands for the Lower East Side in New York. (Isn’t it easier to write and say?) So let’s talk where to find murals in this neighborhood.

Truth is, if you wander around (one of my fave things to do on the Lower East Side, and all of New York!), you’ll bump into murals. As soon as you begin looking for it, you’ll see graffiti and street art on nearly every block.

That said, there are a few hotspots where you can find a ton of Lower East Side graffiti. Read on to plan your adventure. It’s like a scavenger hunt to see all this gorgeous street art!

LES business gates (100 Gates Project)

When the day ends, the Lower East Side turns into a huge art gallery. That’s because many businesses in the LES participate in the 100 Gates Projects, which pairs street artists with business owners. The artists paint a mural on the metal gate that covers a storefront when the business is closed.

Even though evenings and Sundays are the best time to see these murals, since more businesses are closed at those times, you’ll still spot plenty of gate murals in other times. Keep an eye out and you’ll see pops of color on gates—which would have been boring grey otherwise.

I’m in love with this project, in part because it brings art to everyone.

Freeman Alley Graffiti Wall

Freeman Alley in the Lower East Side is a narrow stretch where all the walls—and even the pavement—are covered in graffiti, stencils, stickers and other artwork. This spot is constantly changing as street artists add their own flair to the evolving alley.

Freeman Alley Graffiti Wall is also a great place to see all different types of street art in one place. You’ll spot stickers, of course, as well as stenciled artwork and words. You’ll also see wheatpaste art, where artists stick posters or other paper-based images to the wall using a glue-like mixture of water and flour.

Keep an eye out for small-scale paintings and murals, too. Well known artists as well as newcomers on the scene add their mark in this special street art destination.

Whether you’re looking at one piece up close or taking in the entire space, Freeman Alley is a terrific spot for street art in NYC!

First Street Green Art Park + Cultural Park

What used to be an abandoned lot in the Lower East Side is now a community hub. The First Street Green Art Park forms an alley between East 1st Street and Houston (pronounced “house-tun” not the Texas city “h-use-tun”). Open-air movies, concerts, performances and other cultural events routinely come to this hidden park. You can see great Lower East Side graffiti hear anytime.

You’ll spot murals on both sides of the lot.

When you walk east along Houston, you’ll find yourself in an unexpected green space. Called the First Street Green Cultural Park, this space has hidden murals you’ll want to check out.

Artists have painted on the walls that border the green space. Walk through this area and you might forget you’re right next to one of NYC’s busiest streets.

Don’t forget to look closely! In some cases, plants have incorporated themselves into the art. It’s like they didn’t want to be left out of the fun!

First Street Garden

If you weren’t looking for it, you’d probably pass the little First Street Garden without a second glance. This green space is one of many community-run gardens in New York. In fact, when my sister and I stumbled upon it, two people were tending to the plants.

You might not expect to find murals in a community garden, but the First Street Garden is full of ’em. Most fit within an activist and women leaders theme. You’ll find portraits of Shirley Chisolm and Ida B Wells, among many other trailblazers, behind garden beds and greenery.

More Lower East Side street art in NYC

While the hotspots I detail above have high concentrations of murals in one place, you’ll find impressive murals throughout the entire Lower East Side.

Here’s how I recommend you search for street art. You can either walk a route between the areas I outlined above, looking for murals on the blocks in between.

You can also simply show up and wander, finding street art like treasure scattered throughout the LES.

Take the subway to the Lower East Side. Take your time walking throughout the neighborhood, keeping a keen eye out for murals.

(Remember, they might be painted on business gates, doors, alleys and even parks. Pretty much all public space is fair game!)

You have plenty of options for subway stops. Which one works best for you depends on where you’re coming from. I recommend these subway stops to see Lower East Side graffiti:

• 2nd Ave – F
• Bowery – J/Z
• Grand St – B/D
• Essex/Delancey – F/M/J/Z

Places to eat – Lower East Side, NY

Erin McKenna’s Bakery – Do you love gluten-free, vegan doughnuts as much as I do? Of course you do. That’s why you need to snag these sweet treats when you’re hungry in the Lower East Side. Buy doughnuts, mini doughnuts, bagels, breads and other sweet pastries here at Erin McKenna’s Bakery.

Essex Market – Feeling indecisive? Exploring with friends who can’t agree where to eat? Then head to Essex Market, the public market that’s been open more than 100 years in the LES, NYC. Grab a bagel, sandwich, pastry, turnover, empanada or about a million other yummy food choices. You can dine inside (if you show proof of vaccination, as of Nov 17, 2021) or get food to go. You’ll also find multiple cafes where you can order tea or coffee.

Jajaja Plantas Mexicana – I dare you to say, or eat at, Jajaja without smiling to yourself. The name is literally a laugh, and the all-vegan menu will make your tummy just as glad. I particularly recommend the Buffalo Flower street taco. yum. Jajaja is also well known for their tequila and mezcal, both for sipping and in cocktails. (Find Jajaja on the border between the Lower East Side and Chinatown.)

Pardon My French – If you wrap up your street art tour at cocktail o’clock, make your way to Pardon My French. Their inventive cocktails will make you want to taste through their drinks menu… but be careful because they’re powerful! You might want to order a good base of a burger or baked brie so you don’t have to stumble home.

Where else can I find amazing New York street art?

Luckily for all street art lovers, New York is simply full of epic murals. That said, some neighborhoods are hotspots for graffiti.

These New York neighborhoods have murals that will stay for years; some also have spots where graffiti artists repaint the same wall over and over again. I personally love that street art becomes an ever-rotating gallery. That way it allows newcomer artists to share their work, and street artists can respond to current events or social movements.

Chinatown

The neighborhood to the south of the Lower East Side, Chinatown, also has a ton of gorgeous street art. Walk south from the LES and you’ll stumble across murals, many of which reflect Asian influences.

Bushwick, Brooklyn

One of the best street art locations in New York is undoubtedly Bushwick, in Brooklyn. This neighborhood is simply full of world-class murals from local and international street artists alike.

Harlem

Brief story: When now-Hubs and I first moved in together about a million years ago, we lived in the basement of a brownstone in Harlem. I was dirt broke so just about everything I did had to be free. Luckily, looking at street art in Harlem cost not a penny!

More recently, I explored Harlem’s Audobon murals and more. This project commissioned street artists to paint bird murals all throughout the neighborhood.

Of course, you’ll also find graffiti and murals unrelated to anything avian. Harlem’s street art is definitely worth a subway trip uptown.

By now, I’m sure you agree that looking at New York City street art is one of the best and most unique things to do in NYC, especially in the Lower East Side. I simply can’t wait for you to travel to New York and explore all these murals!

If you’re looking for Newport, Oregon activities, you’re in luck! That’s because there are so many fun things to do in this Oregon Coast town.

Oregon Coast Crabbing

If you want to go crabbing on the Oregon Coast, you can rent a boat and traps, then head out into the water. You don’t have to, though: Crabbing in Newport makes it easy.

In fact, Newport is nicknamed the Dungeness Crab Capital of the World!

Simply rent or buy crabbing traps (aka crab pots), then head to a crabbing pier in Newport. You can park in the public parking area near Rogue Brewery, then walk to the public pier in South Beach. (Other crabbing spots are in the Historic Bayfront—look for Abbey Street Pier or Bay Street Pier.) Add bait, tie the crab pot to something along the pier, and wait about 45 minutes. Pull up the pot to check what you’ve caught!

You can also charter a boat to take you crabbing out on the water.

When is Crabbing Season in Oregon?

So you’re interested in crabbing on the Oregon Coast. Great! You’ll probably be wondering: When is crabbing season in Oregon?

You can crab year-round in Oregon. You can set out crab pots and traps from jetties, piers, and bays in any month. That said, the fall is typically the best time to catch crab because they’ve put on more meat.

When it comes to ocean crabbing for Dungeness, the season closes from October 16 to November 30.

Note: You’ll need a valid and current shellfish license to go crabbing. You’ll also need a tool to measure the crab you catch so you keep only ones that are large enough.

Newport Farmer’s Market

When I travel, I love to eat local—and one way to do that is to shop at farmer’s markets. Newport, Oregon is no different!

The Newport Farmer’s Market is open outdoors seasonally on Saturdays. You can find produce (you’re in luck if you come during strawberry season! Buy all the Hood strawberries you can), honey, eggs and more. You’ll also find prepared food, coffee and espresso stands, and locally made gifts. Sure, you can buy a mass-produced souvenir, or you could bring home a memento crafted by a local artisan.

Newport, Oregon Hikes

I love hitting the trails, so it’s no surprised I’m eager to tell you about Newport, Oregon hikes!

Hatfield Marine Science Center Estuary Trail This paved trail takes you around Newport Bay. It’s not exactly a strenuous hike, but you’ll have a chance to see the bay at a slower pace than you would driving by. Park in or near the Hatfield Center. 1.1 miles.

Yaquina Head Natural Outstanding Area This beautiful area on the north end of Newport offers several very short hikes in Newport. You can walk from the parking area at the visitor’s center to Cobble Beach and then to the Yaquina Head Lighthouse. Devils Punchbowl Drive 15 minutes north of Newport to get to Devils Punchbowl. Most folks park and admire this natural rock formation from above. But if you go at low tide, you can get down to the beach and then walk inside the collapsed cave. Find out how by checking out my post on hiking Devils Punchbowl.

Oregon Coast Aquarium

A trip to Newport, Oregon isn’t complete without a visit to the Oregon Coast Aquarium! The aquarium became famous in the mid-1990s because it was home to Keiko, the orca from the movie Free Willy. Keiko was later, well, freed, and the aquarium is still well worth a stop.

Otters, sea lions, jellyfish, giant spider crabs and one very secretive octopus: See these underwater animals (and many more) when you visit. The Passages of the Deep exhibit, which takes you through a glass tube underwater, is my girls’ favorite part of the aquarium.

You’ll need between 1.5 and 2 hours to explore this Newport, Oregon attraction, depending on how quickly you go and if you watch feedings.

Explore Downtown Newport and the Historic Bayfront

The Historic Bayfront, the heart of Newport, is full of fun things to do as well as a fully functional harbor. That’s what makes this neighborhood so exciting.

Edie in particular loves watching the boats come and go. Fishermen dock here, bringing in the day’s catch to sell.

Newport’s Historic Bayfront is also home to many places to eat, especially seafood restaurants, as you’d expect!

Even if you’re not hungry or wanting to buy souvenirs, I still recommend walking around the Historic Bayfront. This neighborhood definitely gives you a sense of Newport’s character.

Buy Fresh Fish on the Historic Bayfront, Newport

If you’re staying at a home rental in Newport and want to cook the freshest fish you’ve ever eaten, Newport is your spot. You can buy fish right off the boat in the Historic Bayfront.

In the spring through fall, go to docks 3, 5 and 7 to buy your future dinner from local fishermen. (The fish available depends on the season and availability, of course.) You may be able to find salmon, tuna, black cod, halibut and ling cod.

You can also ask them to filet the fish for you.

Some boats sell canned fish as well. Canned tuna and salmon makes a unique (and very welcome!) gift for the folks who weren’t lucky enough to join you in Newport, OR for vacation.

One last note about buying fish from fishermen in Newport: Buying direct means the maximum amount of money from the sale goes straight to the hardworking people who caught your food. You get the absolute freshest catch, and you support independent businesses. It’s a win-win.

Hatfield Marine Science Center

At the Hatfield Marine Science Center, you can watch a giant Pacific octopus play, touch sea urchins and create tiny tsunamis in a wave simulator. The visitor center is run by the science center, part of Oregon State University’s marine biology program.

More good news: The Hatfield Marine Science Center is a free thing to do in Newport, Oregon! The center is located just north of the Oregon Coast Aquarium.

COVID-19 update: The Hatfield Marine Science Center was closed to visitors during the peak of the pandemic but is now open!

Wander Aquarium Village

The Oregon Coast Aquarium is located south of Yaquina Bay, not in the Historic Bayfront (where many people assume it is). Unfortunately, that means the area around the aquarium isn’t walkable: You’ll need to drive there.

If you’re looking for more fun things to do in Newport, drive a little farther south and you’ll reach the Aquarium Village.

The Aquarium Village is a short distance from the Oregon Coast Aquarium. This Newport, Oregon attraction is made up of a few blocks of colorfully painted buildings. Home to shops, restaurants and even an escape room, families can have fun checking out the Aquarium Village.

Find Oregon Coast Murals

Long-term readers of To & Fro Fam know how much my kids and I adore street art. If you do, too, you’ll love keeping an eye out for murals in Newport.

As you might expect, most of these murals are ocean-themed. You’ll find them painted on buildings in the Historic Bayfront as well as around Aquarium Village.

Order an ice cream from BJ’s or Doodle Bugs, then walk around the bay. You’ll stumble across some gems! Beautiful street art tops my list of fun Newport, Oregon attractions.

Newport Beaches

You’ve come to the Oregon Coast for a reason, right? I’m betting at least part of that reason has to do with Newport beaches.

The Oregon Coast can be temperamental. Some days are fogged in; others are rainy and chilly; still others are so warm you’ll mistake the beach for California!

That said, please don’t bet on sunny and hot weather. You risk being disappointed. Instead, plan to enjoy Newport beaches—or any other spot on the Oregon Coast—no matter the weather. (If you end up visiting in crummy conditions, read my post on things to do on the Oregon Coast when it rains.)

Newport beaches are gorgeous—you’ll want to visit all of them! Here are our favorites.

Nye Beach, Newport

Nye Beach is both an historic neighborhood as well as a beach in Newport, OR. The neighborhood is home to cute shops, and old-timey ice cream spot and Coast Park, which has an enormously tall slide.

Nye Beach is another beautiful sand beach. Access it next to the public parking lot on NW Beach Dr., past the Chowder Bowl restaurant.

Take a rest on the benches that overlook this Newport, Oregon beach, or bring your kite. This beach’s wide open space and windy days make it an excellent kite flying spot!

Yaquina Bay Beach

When we go to a Newport, Oregon beach, we typically head to the one within Yaquina Bay State Recreation Site. To get to the beach, you walk down a path through wind-twisted trees.

The wide, fine-sand beach is well worth the short hike. This beach makes it feel as though you could run until your legs gave out—and still be on the same stretch of sand!

My kids also love climbing on the driftwood here. At the south end of the beach, a jetty juts into the ocean, protecting Yaquina Bay.

Yaquina Beach is located just north of the bridge that crosses Yaquina Bay. I typically find parking easily here, and there are restrooms as well as a spigot to wash sand off your feet.

South Beach

Just south of the Newport bridge, on the other side of Yaquina Bay, is South Beach. Miles of fine-sand beach stretches south of the South Jetty and is accessibly by this state park.

If you want a break from the beach, you can access hiking and biking trails here. Or try your hand at disc golf! You can get a map for the disc golf course at the visitor center.

Know that the area around South Beach is marshy, which means mosquitoes are an issue beginning in mid- to late-June. Bring insect repellant.

Agate Beach

Agate Beach, on the north end of Newport, is another wide and sandy stretch that’s perfect for beach combing and playing in the waves. But contrary to what its name suggests, this is not actually a good spot to find agates! Changes in the nearby jetties have caused sand to build up at Agate Beach. That’s good news for people who like wide beaches but bad news for rock hounds.

When you look north, you’ll see the Yaquina Head Lighthouse in the distance. The view alone makes Agate Beach worth a stop.

Beverly Beach

My kids and I love Beverly Beach, which is just north of Newport, OR. This sandy stretch also has a creek where kids and dogs love to splash. The water in the creek is warmer than the ocean, which makes it more comfortable for a quick dip!

The best part about Beverly Beach, in my opinion, is that you can find tons of fossils here. Look in the sandstone cliffs and the rocks for fossilized shells.

Cobble Beach

Cobble Beach, in the Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area, is unique. It’s made up of countless round stones. These volcanic rocks clack together when the waves rush in, making for one of our favorite Newport, Oregon attractions. This makes a distinctive noise that gave the beach its nickname: Laughing Beach.

You’ll need to walk a flight of stairs down to the beach, so it is not ADA accessible. Once you’re there, you can explore tide pools at low tide. You will also need to stay clear of an area popular with sea lions: It’ll be roped off.

Newport, Oregon Lodging

I love small towns on the Oregon Coast, but they can be very limited for places to stay. That’s not the case with Newport, Oregon lodging.

Here, you’ll find plenty of options. You can stay in a short-term home rental. You can stay in one of many Newport, Oregon hotels. Heck, you can even go camping!

When you’re looking for lodging, check out Google maps. It will show you how close it is to Newport beaches. I always recommend people stay on the west side of Highway 101, if possible. That way you can more easily walk to the beach. (It can be irritating to cross Highway 101, especially if you’re all sandy!)

Newport, Oregon Hotels

If you’re going the hotel route, you have a whole range of choices. If you’re particular, you can search for oceanfront properties or Newport, Oregon hotels with an ocean view.

When you look for where to stay in Newport, consider if you want to prioritize beach access, cost, or proximity to the Historic Bayfront. It’s really, really hard to get all three of those factors!

As a general rule, oceanfront hotels are more expensive. You’ll probably pay more for a room on the west side of Highway 101 vs on the east side.

If you’re looking to get fancy, can I recommend the Inn at Nye Beach? It’s a gorgeous spot in an historic neighborhood within easy walking distance of the ocean. The best part: the Inn at Nye Beach is home to an infinity pool overlooking the Pacific Ocean—the only one of its kind in Oregon!

Newport, Oregon Camping

Would you rather pitch a tent or drive your motorhome to the Oregon Coast? Then you might love these Newport camping options.

South Beach State Park. Expect a standard Oregon state park campground: decently sized sites, flush toilets, garbage pickup, and tidy campground. You’ll also have easy access to South Beach.

Pacific Shores MotorCoach Resort As its name suggests, this Newport, Oregon camping option is for RVs only. (That excludes travel trailers, if I’m not mistaken.) The RV campground includes an outdoor pool and beach access.

Beverly Beach State Park Just north of Newport, you’ll find Beverly Beach State Park. (If you remember, this is the Newport beach with fossils!) You can easily walk to the beach from the campsites or stroll the campground’s nature trails. Beverly Beach also has reservable yurts that have electricity.

Newport, Oregon Restaurants

Has enjoying all these Newport, Oregon activities worked up an appetite? If so, you’re in luck! This Oregon Coast town of course specializes in seafood, but that’s not the only option you have.

Newport, Oregon restaurants also include brew pubs, American food, Thai cuisine and more. But—if you’re not vegetarian—why not take advantage and dine on what the sea provides?

Local Ocean

Local Ocean is probably my favorite seafood restaurant in Newport. The food is incredibly fresh (most of the catch comes directly from the boats that dock just across the street!). The restaurant works directly with roughly 50 fishermen.

Like its name suggests, Local Ocean specializes in seafood. I’ve had their tuna kebabs, skewered scallops, and bites of a friend’s Dungeness crab cakes. Honestly, you can’t go wrong with anything on this Newport restaurant’s menu. If you can’t decide, close your eyes and point to the menu. Whatever your finger lands on is sure to be delicious!

Rogue Brewery

Quick story: I once took Edie to Newport for a mother-daughter date, just the two of us. She ate hardly any lunch, and we played for three hours on South Beach in uncharacteristically beautiful weather. By the time we finished, we were both starving.

I took Edie to Rogue Brewery for dinner. She ordered a cheeseburger—and devoured it in record time. I’m sure that hunger was an important seasoning here, but she *still* measures every single cheeseburger she eats against the legendary Rogue Brewery burger. So far nothing else has measured up!

I can’t promise you’ll be as obsessed with your Rogue meal, but I bet you’ll enjoy it. Expect a typical brew pub menu and a great kids’ menu. I usually order the Northwest garden salad but sub the dressing, as I think the basil vinaigrette is overly sweet.

One fun thing about eating at Rogue in Newport is you walk through the brewery to get to the restaurant, which is on the second floor. It’s cool to see the enormous tanks where the beer is brewed, including the famous Dead Guy Ale.

Rogue is located mere minutes away from the Oregon Coast Aquarium, which makes it a perfect Newport, Oregon restaurant for before or after a visit. (I much prefer it to the other nearby restaurants on that side of the Bay.)

The Chalet: Gluten-free fish and chips!

The Chalet is impossible to miss: It’s the bright blue building on Highway 101. What this Newport restaurant lacks in architectural appeal it makes up for in **gluten-free fish and chips!**

If you’re GF like me, you’re probably bummed that you can never eat fish and chips when visiting the Oregon Coast. After all, those pieces of fish are breaded with, well, bread.

That’s why I’m beyond excited that The Chalet offers gluten-free fish and chips. Finally!

Fish Peddler’s Market and Restaurant

When you first walk into Fish Peddler’s, you might not realize that it’s actually a restaurant. It looks more like a fresh fish shop. In reality, it’s both!

In fact, the unique thing about this Newport seafood restaurant is that you can pick the fish you want to eat—right from the counter.

It’s definitely a different experience. You know the fish is high quality and super-fresh because you can see it. This informal Newport, Oregon restaurant is also incredibly kid-friendly.

Mo’s: Famous clam chowder

Mo’s is an iconic restaurant with several locations along the Oregon Coast. It’s most famous for clam chowder, which you can eat while looking across the bay.

You’ll need luck to snag a window table, since Mo’s is packed (especially on weekends and peak meal times). If you want a better chance of watching the resident sea lions or boats going by, eat at Mo’s on a weekday or “off” times.

Be honest: What’s Newport, Oregon weather really like?

Yes, yes, I know that Oregon has the reputation of constantly raining. Newport, Oregon weather isn’t so terrible, though!

Let me be more specific. Between November and April, it rains roughly half of all days. Yes, that’s a lot of rain. The amount of rain is less than you might think. In Oregon, drizzles are more common than outright downpours.

Newport, Oregon weather gets dryer and sunnier in the summer. Rainy days decrease between May and September. In July, the city averages only two rainy days!

The temperate weather is one reason why people love visiting Newport. Temperatures are nearly always mild, both in the winter and summer. For example, the average high temperature in December is 50 degrees. In July—the sunniest month—high temps average 61 degrees! So bring both warm layers and sunscreen when you visit Newport, Oregon.

What about the tides in Newport, OR?

Just like everywhere on the Oregon Coast, the tides change daily. You’ll need to look at a tides chart to find out when low and high tides are.

As always, keep a keen eye on the ocean. Always be aware of the tide so you know if it’s coming in. Tides can rise quickly, and you don’t want to be caught by an unexpected wave.

What’s Newport known for?

Newport, Oregon is known for its fishing and crabbing. As a working harbor, Yaquina Bay allows fishermen to dock and unload their catch. Ling cod, halibut, rockfish and albacore tuna are all caught in the Pacific Ocean here.

Three types of salmon also congregate in the waters around Newport. Coho, chinook and chum salmon can all be caught here.

As you read above, Newport is also well known for its aquarium, which once held the orca made famous in the movie Free Willy.

Is Newport Oregon worth visiting?

YES. Newport, OR is a lovely Oregon Coast town to visit for a day trip from Portland or much, much longer.

I love that just about everyone can find something to love about Newport. The adventurous can charter a deep sea fishing trip. Kids adore the aquarium. And folks who just want to chill out can stroll the many Newport beaches.

Whenever you’re camping in hot weather, do yourself a favor and stay cool!

How to cool a tent without electricity

In my house, we’re pretty stingy about using the AC. When temperatures soar, though, we’re not opposed to cranking up the air—especially since we have two fluffy senior dogs who don’t do well in the heat.

It goes without saying, though, that we don’t do this while camping in hot weather. Many RVs have air conditioning, but we camp in a tent. That’s why we’ve worked out these ideas on how to cool a tent without electricity.

Sound too good to be true? It’s not! With these camping in the heat hacks, you’ll cool your tent without electricity—and make your hot weather camping much more comfortable.

Set up your tent in the shade

This tip sounds like a “duh” moment, but you’d be surprised by how many tents I see set up in the sun! That’s a big no-no for camping in hot weather.

Tents are basically greenhouses. You’re not trying to grow tropical plants, though! You want to keep your tent as cool as possible.

The very first step is to pick a shady spot. Find a tree and set up your tent in the shade, if possible.

If you have choices of trees, consider which way the sun will be moving. Afternoon sun is hotter than morning sun, so aim to set up your tent where it will be shaded after noon. This will be on the east side of a tree or other barrier.

Block the sun with a sun shade

This next camping in hot weather hack is so effective! Tie up a tarp or a reflective sun shade above your tent. This will block the sun’s rays from heating up your tent like an oven.

Tie corners of the tarp or sun shade to trees so the cover is a foot above the top of your tent. The space will ensure air can circulate between the tarp and your tent.

I recommend a long-lasting, UV-blocking sun shade like this one:

In fact, you should get two. Why? You can use one sun shade above your tent, then stretch out another to create a shady spot to hang out. It’s much nicer to eat at a picnic table that’s shady, and it helps with staying cool while camping!

Face your tent toward the breeze

You know when you’re watching pro golfers and they drop a pinch of grass in the air to see which way the wind is blowing? Channeling your inner PGA pro is optional, but follow their lead. Find out which way the breeze blows, then position your tent accordingly.

Not sure which way the wind is blowing? Use the grass trick, wet a finger with your tongue and hold it up to feel the breeze, or simply look at the weather app on your phone. It usually shows which way the wind is blowing.

You also might be camping in hot weather in a place where the wind typically goes in a given direction. This is especially common near bodies of water. The breeze usually blows inland off the ocean, and it’s common for wind to blow upriver in the afternoon (when weather is hottest).

Position your tent so the widest side with a mesh opening faces the breeze. That will get more air flow into your tent.

Use nature’s air conditioning for hot weather tent camping

You know from experience (or physics class) that hot air rises. You can use the same principle that keeps hot air balloons aloft to cool a tent without electricity or air conditioning.

Now that you’ve positioned your tent’s window, door or mesh wall toward the breeze, create another opening. Ideally this is a window, door or other mesh opening on the opposite side of the tent.

Open this window or door at the top, as high in the tent as you can.

This hack to cool a tent without electricity creates a vacuum or mini-wind tunnel. Cool air is blown in on one side. As the air heats, it is sucked out of the opposite opening.

Use this tip every time you go camping in hot weather!

Use ice + a fan while camping in hot weather

This hot weather tent camping tip does require batteries—but no electrical hookups. Start by buying a small battery-powered fan. I recommend one that’s small enough to easily fit in a tent but big enough to move a decent amount of air, like this one:

Depending on how long you’re camping, you’ll want to bring a small supply of batteries to power your fan.

Next, place a frozen ice pack or frozen jug of water in front and slightly below the fan. As the ice melts, the fan will blow cold air throughout the tent.

This camping in the heat hack has an important caveat, though. Make sure you have enough ice to keep your food cool. If not, obviously don’t take ice to cool a tent without electricity. Instead, you can do this same hack with a bucket of cold water (like from a nearby creek). I don’t recommend that for inside a tent, since it’s so easy to knock it over and soak the inside of your tent. You can do the cold water and fan trick while eating dinner, for example.

Sleep on a cot

You know how you left a foot of space between the top of your tent and the sun shade? You can use the same air flow principles to sleep more comfortably while camping in hot weather.

Buy a lightweight cot to sleep on inside your tent. When you’re off the ground, air circulates below as well as above you. This keeps you cooler at night!

Some camping cots raise you just a few inches off the ground. That’s good enough to ensure you don’t sleep with a pine cone digging into your spine. It’s not enough for proper air circulation to cool you off, though.

That’s why I recommend a camping cot that keeps you higher off the ground, like this budget-friendly and reliable cot:

Now a cot won’t help you stay cool if you’re using a heavy-duty, freezing temperatures sleeping bag. You can buy hot weather sleeping bags or sleeping bag liners, but honestly you can just bring a sheet and sleep under that.

Remove the rain fly when camping in hot weather

If the weather forecast is dry—no thunderstorms on the horizon—take off your tent’s rain fly. Just as it keeps water out, it traps heat in. That’s not what you want when you’re camping in hot weather!

By taking off the rain fly, you’ll allow the hot air to escape through your tent’s mesh roof. And if you’ve set up a tent or sun shade, you’ll still be protected from any out-of-the-blue rain.

(And cool fact: Bend, Oregon is only one of 4 US cities with a volcano within city limits! It’s Pilot Butte, which you can hike for a 360-degree view of the mountains and high desert around Bend.)

Don’t worry, though: The volcanoes here are all dormant now.

Best places to stay in Central Oregon

Central Oregon is not exactly a thriving epicenter of cities—which is part of why I love this region so much!

High desert stretches between Central Oregon cities and towns. You’ll drive past ranch land, rock formations and wide stretches of high desert.

You’ll want to find a great town to post up while you explore this area. Read on for the best places to stay in Central Oregon: the towns and cities you can make your home base for adventures.

Bend, Oregon

Bend, OR is Central Oregon’s largest city as well as its cultural and education hub. Bend is a happening place!

This is the most outdoorsy city I’ve ever been to (and return to again and again!). People in Bend seem to spend every possible moment outdoors, no matter the season.

In winter, you ski, snowboard or snowshoe. In summer, you kayak, float the Deschutes River and swim. Fall in Bend is ideal for hiking. And consider the spring a way to revisit winter when flowers are popping up near you: Snow lasts for months at high elevations so you can continue to ski for months!

Bend is also famous for its breweries. Don’t miss beer tasting—it’s practically an official pastime for locals. (After all, the city has a brewery for every 4,000 residents or so—one of the highest concentrations of craft breweries in the US!)

Bend is located about 3 hours from Portland, OR.

Sisters, Oregon

Sisters, OR is a tiny town with serious Old West flair. Many of the buildings on the main drag look as though they could be a backdrop for West World.

Sisters is famous for its quilt festival in July (though to my kids it’s best known for its old timey ice cream shop). It’s also a terrific place to stay in Central Oregon while you explore.

This Central Oregon town is quirky, too. It’s home to one of the world’s only beer spas: Hop in the Spa pairs hot soaks infused with beer ingredients with other spa treatments and, of course, cold glasses of ambers, porters and IPAs.

This little town is located right on Highway 126, which runs from Eugene to Bend. It’s a 2-hour drive from Eugene. (If that’s the route you take, make sure to stop at Proxy Falls on the way: It’s a short hike to one of the state’s most gorgeous cascades.)

Terrebonne, Oregon

Terrebonne, Oregon is the gateway to Smith Rock State Park. This town’s name mean’s “good earth,” and I agree: It’s a lovely place to stay in Central Oregon.

The area around Terrebonne, OR is largely ranches. You’ll find horses, cattle and even alpacas raised here. (You can feed the alpacas at Crescent Moon Ranch, which is one of Edie and Max’s favorite things to do in Central Oregon!)

I recommend eating at Terrebonne Depot when you get hungry. This restaurant focuses on local ingredients and flavors. When the weather is nice, eat outside to overlook the (now unused) train tracks. The building used to be an old train depot!

Bucket list things to do in Central Oregon

There’s a good reason why Central Oregon is one of my favorite parts of the US. Well actually, there are many reasons.

This area of Oregon is so unlike the better known Western part of the state (think Portland, rain and dense forests). When you visit, you won’t want to miss these epic, bucket list things to do in Central Oregon that make this region an unforgettable place to visit.

Visit Smith Rock State Park

When you drive through Oregon’s high desert, you can sometimes see for miles and miles. If you peer far away enough, you might catch a glimpse of one of Central Oregon’s most famous landmarks: Smith Rock State Park.

This spot has been named one of the 7 Wonders of Oregon, and for good reason. Enormous cliff faces jut into the sky over the Crooked River to create a dramatic, photogenic landscape.

Miles of trails crisscross the state park, giving you plenty of options. From the Misery Ridge Trail (more on that below) to the mellow and mostly flat River Trail, you and your crew can choose your own adventure.

As you explore Smith Rock State Park, keep an eye out for the many rock climbers scaling the cliff faces. (Bring binoculars so you can see them up close!) After all, Smith Rock is considered the birthplace of modern rock climbing.

Explore the Painted Hills, Oregon

The Painted Hills in Oregon are breathtaking. It looks as if a little kid took a box of crayons and colored all over the landscape.

Yellow, orange, ochre, red—these vibrant colors decorate the hillsides. When you travel from spot to spot among the Painted Hills, the scenery changes. Some hills are all deep red; others are striated in different colors.

Something that makes visiting the Painted Hills one of the best things to do in Central Oregon: You can easily explore the area in a day. You won’t need to pick and choose which hikes to do because they’re all relatively short.

Painted Cove Trail is a flat, curving walkway between ochre-red hills, where it feels as if you’ve landed on Mars. The Painted Hills Overlook Trail gives you a different perspective as you gaze out at golden hills from above. And Carroll Rim Trail is just one mile with interpretive signs so you learn as you walk.

Make sure you pack enough food and water for a day at the Painted Hills in Oregon. There are little to no facilities and accommodations, even potable water, so come prepared.

See the Newberry National Volcanic Monument

When you visit Newberry National Volcanic Monument, don’t expect to see a dramatic peak with a blown-off top. Here, you’re actually inside the (extinct) volcano!

This volcano is actually the size of Rhode Island. Back in the day, it was quite active. The most recent eruption was relatively recent: 1300 years ago, it created the Big Obsidian Flow. All the lava has cooled, of course, and you can now hike the diverse trails in this area.

Lava Lands Visitor Center is a great place to start exploring Newberry National Volcanic Monument. This visitors center has interpretive exhibits and displays, but its main draw is Lava Butte. Here, you can walk around the rim of a crater and climb a tower for epic views of the landscape.

Best hikes in Central Oregon

Hiking and Central Oregon are like peanut butter and jelly: They just go together.

Whether you’re looking for an easy, kid friendly trail or a strenuous trek that will get you huffing and puffing, you can find a hike in Central Oregon that fits your plan.

So lace up those hiking boots and hit one of the best hikes in Central Oregon!

Tumalo Falls, Bend

Tumalo Falls is near the top of most things to do in Bend, OR. This waterfall hike lies just a few miles outside town and it’s popular among locals and visitors alike.

That said, it is very popular with limited parking, so arrive as early as you can to snag a spot. Then take the short paved path to the scenic overlook, where you can see Tumalo Falls in full.

Next, follow the paved path back to the main trailhead. Continue to hike up through the pine trees. Go as far as you like; it’s an out and back trail. Keep an eye out for spots where you can walk down to the river and take a rest on the wide rocks.

Lucky Lake, Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway

I love this sweet and relatively quiet hike along the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway. The Lucky Lake Trail is short enough for young hikers and ends at a beautiful, swimmable lake. The bright blue water reflects Broken Top, South Sister and Middle Sister mountains.

The trail is well maintained and doesn’t get too steep. Once it reaches the lake, it forms a loop so you can walk around Lucky Lake’s perimeter.

Bring your swimming suit and a towel so you can cool off after your hike with a swim!

Misery Ridge, Smith Rock State Park

You might be wondering why anyone would voluntarily hike a trail called Misery Ridge. It sounds kind of… miserable… doesn’t it?

Don’t be scared away by this Central Oregon hike’s name. The Smith Rock State Park trail is mostly moderate, though some sections are steep. Don’t hesitate to pause and take a breather: The break gives you a chance to watch rock climbers scaling the cliffs around you.

Misery Ridge Trail is a 6-mile loop, and you can combine it with many of the other trails within Smith Rock State Park.

Lava River Cave, Central Oregon

Open May through September, Lava River Cave is one of the most unique things to do in Central Oregon.

This hike stretches about a mile underground through a tube left by a lava flow. Some stretches are made of metal walkways, but you’ll need to walk over and around rocks much of the time.

Access to Lava River Cave is maintained by the forest service, and they limit the number of people in the cave at one time. You’ll want to rent at least one flashlight from the visitor center here, too: It’s dark—as in you can’t see your hand in front of your face—underground! Make sure you bring backup flashlights, too.

Bats live in Lava River Cave but don’t let that bother you. You’ll be hiking here in the day, when these nocturnal creatures are asleep. Just ensure you aren’t wearing shoes or clothes you’ve worn into another cave: Even washed clothes or shoes can carry a disease that can decimate bat populations.

Steelhead Falls, Terrebonne

If you’re staying in or near Terrebonne, make a side trip to hike to Steelhead Falls. It’s only a half-mile walk to this beautiful waterfall.

You can continue past the falls along the creek to stretch out your hike. Steelhead Falls is a lovely little hike great for kids. And as it’s shaded and near water, this Central Oregon hike is perfect to cool off on a hot day.

Paulina Creek Falls

Paulina Creek leaves nearby Paulina Lake to plunge 80 feet into a pool below. Park at the trailhead to either walk the paved path to a viewpoint above the falls or hike the short but steep trail to the base.

Side-by-side cascades tumble off the cliff above. The spray might reach you at the bottom of the trail; it certainly makes good habitat for wildflowers in late spring and early summer.

You can also hike from the falls to Paulina Lake.

Paulina Lake Loop Trail

Paulina Lake is one of several lakes within the Newberry Crater (yep, those volcanoes again!). A trail encircles the lake, making for a 7.5-mile, mostly flat hike.

The few up-and-down sections give you a beautiful view of Paulina Lake and the surrounding lava-shaped landscape. You can also access a natural hot spring from this Central Oregon hike.

Afterward, grab a bite to eat or rent a boat from the lodge here.

Best lakes in Central Oregon

You might be thinking, Wait, didn’t Catherine just say that Central Oregon is mostly desert? Yes, I did say that. It’s also home to mountains with high peaks, and the snow melt feeds alpine lakes all over the region.

Exploring the best lakes in Central Oregon is one of my favorite things to do here. Whether you’re camping, taking a day trip to Bend, or stopping on your way to other adventures, make a point to explore one (or more!) of these alpine lakes.

Lava Lake, OR

In the Deschutes National Forest in the Cascade Range, Lava Lake is a popular site for fishing, boating, hiking, camping and more. Its waters can appear almost teal—watch for the rainbow trout, which grow up to two feet long!

Look north of the lake to spot Broken Top and South Sister mountains. In fact, Lava Lake and the surrounding lakes were formed by volcanic activity.

(Many years ago, lava flowed from Mt. Bachelor and, when it hardened, separated Lava Lake from its cleverly named neighbor, Little Lava Lake.)

Hosmer Lake, OR

Just a few minutes off the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway, Hosmer Lake is a less busy spot to paddle, fish and camp.

I love taking my paddle board here. It’s a small lake, so you can easily paddle around the whole thing in a few hours. Keep an eye out for beaches and landing spots so you can pause for a swim.

I’ve also been to Hosmer Lake as a part of an outing with Wanderlust Tours, based in Bend. Hubs and I did a moonlight canoe paddle on Hosmer Lake, and I’ll never forget floating in the dark while listening to the croak-croak of frogs all around us.

Best Central Oregon camping

While Oregon has the reputation of less-than-awesome weather, Central Oregon doesn’t have the wet weather patterns of the western part of the state. That’s good news for people who want to pitch a tent in Central Oregon!

We haven’t camped a ton in this area—yet. But I’ll continue to add to this list as we explore the area even more.

Lake Billy Chinook Camping

Lake Billy Chinook is a reservoir on the Crooked, Deschutes and Metolius Rivers. A half-hour north of Redmond, OR, this spot is popular for camping, boating and hiking.

Several campsites around the lake lie within the Cove Palisades State Park. Campsites are large but don’t have a ton of privacy from each other. You’ll also find playgrounds in different sections of the campgrounds.

When you camp here, you’ll want to play in the water. Kayak, SUP, swim and do like we did: rent a pontoon for the day! We had an amazing time putt-putting all around Lake Billy Chinook, pausing to fish, swim and admire waterfalls.

When to visit Central Oregon

I love visiting Central Oregon every time of year! Summer and winter are the busiest times here. In the warm summer months, visitors arrive to hike, kayak, raft the rivers and play in the alpine lakes.

In the winter, folks flock to Central Oregon to ski, snowboard, snowshoe and winter hike.

Spring and fall are Central Oregon’s shoulder seasons. They’re much less busy—and more economical—than peak travel months.

You should visit Central Oregon based on what you’d like to do. If you’re most interested in outdoor activities like hiking, come in the summer and fall. If you’re a snow bunny, brave the winter crowds.

Much of the high desert is accessible and 100% worth a visit any time of year. We traveled to Smith Rock twice in January; one time, the weather was sunny and warm and the next weekend, we hiked through 6 inches of snow!

Recommended lodging near Bend, OR

We love staying in Central Oregon and Bend, OR. So we visit every chance we can get!

I like and recommend the Riverhouse on the Deschutes in Bend, especially if you’re traveling with pets. This hotel is extremely dog-friendly! I loved that the back sliding door of our room opened onto a riverside path. The restaurant here also has an enormous deck for open-air dining—a perk these days even more than usual.

We also love the Pine Ridge Inn in Bend, OR. The rooms here are spacious and cozy. I loved drinking my morning tea while overlooking the Deschutes from our room’s private patio.

In fact, all these must-dos add up to a bit of overwhelm if you’re planning an Oregon Coast vacation. Where should I go? you might be wondering. Which Oregon Coast towns should I visit? What Oregon Coast hikes should I plan? What about the beaches, the sand dunes, the shipwrecks?

You might want to ask a local for their recommendation. If you’re fresh out of besties who live in Oregon, allow me to stand in to give you advice from a local.

(I grew up in Oregon and have been going to the Oregon Coast since I was 2. I now live outside of Portland, OR with my family and rescue dogs, and we head to the beach as often as we can—sometimes several times in a month.)

So if you want tips and recommendations for things to do on the Oregon Coast, you’ve come to the right place. Well, you’ve come to the right place on the internet. The truly right place, as you’ll agree once you read this post, is the Oregon Coast.

The Best Oregon Coast Towns

Up and down the Pacific Ocean, you’ll find sweet Oregon Coast towns: Little communities that welcome visitors but have their own local feel, too.

With so many Oregon Coast towns to travel to, the choices can feel overwhelming. But each one offers something a little different. Read on to see where you’ll go on your next Oregon Coast vacation.

Florence, Oregon

Just an hour from Eugene and two hours from Salem, Florence sits at the connection between the Siuslaw River and the Pacific Ocean. This rich estuary habitat means tons of wildlife, from sea lions to sandpipers. There’s plenty for humans to do, too!

One of the reasons I love Florence, Oregon is that it has a small town feel—especially historic Old Town, which is the heart of the visitor-friendly city. Pretty much everything else, from restaurants to hotels, lie along Highway 101—the main road that runs through Florence.

The wide, long beaches here are wonderful to walk, but this Oregon Coast town is best known for its sand dunes. Cross the Siuslaw River to reach the sand dunes at South Jetty or drive a few miles south to Honeyman State Park to play on these mountains of sand.

Newport, Oregon

Growing up, my family and I usually went to Florence when we visited the Oregon Coast. Occasionally, though, we’d head to Newport, OR and it was always a really big deal.

Newport still holds a special place in my heart.

This coastal city is well known for its fishing. Visitors who prefer the DIY route can head out to see to catch their own salmon, halibut and Dungeness crab. Excellent seafood restaurants and shops will serve you, too (without the seasickness!).

Newport is also a science town. It’s home to an Oregon State University marine research center (which is free to visit) as well as the Oregon Coast Aquarium. And don’t forget to save time for this Oregon Coast town’s phenomenal beaches.

Astoria, Oregon

Technically, Astoria, Oregon isn’t on the Oregon Coast; it lies on the Columbia just upriver from where it connects to the Pacific Ocean. But just about everyone thinks of Astoria as an Oregon Coast town—one with its own unique feel.

Astoria was a fishing and canning city. It holds tight to these roots, showing off its history at museums and preserved docks. In fact, Astoria has the most museums of any Oregon Coast town, as well as boutique shops and antique stores.

A walkable trail winds from east to west along the Columbia River. (You can also take the trolley here!) Excellent restaurants offer views of the Columbia as well as delicious seafood and wine from nearby wine regions.

A 15-minute drive will take you to one of the nearby beaches, such as Warrenton or, my favorite, Fort Stevens. (It has a real-live shipwreck on the beach!)

Manzanita, Oregon

Fewer than 700 people live in Manzanita, Oregon, which means it definitely qualifies as a sweet small town on the Oregon Coast. It’s less popular and trafficked than other Oregon Coast towns—read: fewer tourists—which can make for a quieter Oregon Coast vacation.

Come for wine tasting, local food or just a stroll on the beach.

Cannon Beach, Oregon

Cannon Beach, OR is one of the most popular Oregon Coast towns. It’s an easy drive from Portland, which makes it a convenient destination. Its location also makes it crowded, especially during the summer and on sunny weekends.

Cannon Beach is most famous for—you guessed it—its gorgeous beach. At low tide, the beachfront becomes an almost never-ending stretch of flat sand.

Haystack Rock is one of the most recognizable landmarks in Oregon. The huge hunk of basalt is home to birds, including tufted puffins, and other wildlife. At low tide, walk right up to towering Haystack Rock, where you can look for sea stars, barnacles and anemones. (In fact, I have Haystack Rock tattooed on my left arm!)

This Oregon Coast town may be busy, but it has just about anything a visitor would want to do, eat and explore. There’s a reason it’s so popular: Cannon Beach is a wonderful destination.

Depoe Bay, Oregon

Depoe Bay, OR has a few claims to fame: It’s the most popular whale watching town on the Oregon Coast, and it has the world’s smallest navigable harbor. Stats aside, this small town and its rugged landscape make it a lovely destination on your Highway 101 road trip or Coast vacation.

Whale watching should definitely be on your Depoe Bay bucket list. Check out the low-key Whale Watch Center, where experts will give you pointers on what to look for. You can also break out the binoculars as you walk along the sea wall. (Just watch out: At high tide and during stormy weather, you might get sprayed by the surf spouting up over the walkway!)

Whale watching charters also leave from Depoe Bay. You’re likely to spot one, for example one of the area’s resident gray whales that live here March through December.

You’ll also want to stroll along the sidewalk built right alongside the coastal cliffs that look out onto the Pacific Ocean. It’s the only of its kind on the Oregon Coast.

Seaside, Oregon

Seaside, OR feels the most like an East Coast beach spot of all the other Oregon Coast towns. A flat boardwalk stretches alongside several miles of flat beach, where folks stroll and bike.

Although Seaside is a busy coastal town, similar to Cannon Beach, its huge swath of sand makes it feel less crowded.

My kids particularly love the carousel in Seaside and the swing sets right on the beach. There’s something super-special about swinging with the sea breeze blowing through your hair!

If you’re looking for shopping, check out the outlet mall in Seaside. Famous brands, including Nike and Columbia, sell discounted clothes and gear.

Rockaway Beach, Oregon

Rockaway Beach, Oregon is a little town—with plenty of sand. 7 miles of beach stretch the length of the town, but that’s not the only thing that makes Rockaway Beach, OR special.

Ride a steam train to nearby Garibaldi, OR. Walk among enormous old growth trees along the trails. Even take your chances of meeting the town’s ghost, Roger, at Grumpy’s Cafe! (Roger is usually shy when lots of customers are around, but it’s always possible to witness the ghost knock something off a shelf or turn the faucet off.)

Yachats, Oregon

Blink and you might miss the teensy tiny town of Yachats, Oregon. But you’ll want to keep a keen eye out for this Oregon Coast town on Highway 101: Its adorable charm and dramatic landscape make it well worth a visit.

The main street area of Yachats, OR is walkable, making it easy to bop between shops, restaurants and the bakery. (YUM don’t miss the bakery!)

This Oregon Coast town does have sand beaches, but when you drive a short way south on Highway 101 you’ll find dramatic cliffs and rugged rocks. Devil’s Churn and Thor’s Well are a short drive from Yachats, as is Cape Perpetua, where you’ll find hiking trails and one of the best views of the Oregon Coast.

Pacific City, OR

Pacific City, OR on the Northern Oregon Coast is best known for the Cape Kiwanda State Natural Area—but that’s not all. This little town is also famous for its historic dory fishing fleet. In fact, you can watch independent fishermen launch their dory from just a few steps away on the Pacific City beach. You can also eat the day’s catch in the town’s local seafood restaurants.

Just off the beach, you’ll see Haystack Rock. This is confusing because the Haystack Rock that everyone knows and loves (and that graces so many Oregon Coast landscape photos and postcards) is in Cannon Beach. I guess the Pacific Ocean is big enough for two Haystack Rocks. Watch the sun set behind this sea stack or admire it from the patio of Pelican Brewing. (You might also catch a beautiful sunrise like I did on this day!)

Pacific City is also well known as an Oregon Coast surfing town. It’s not ideal for beginners, but a longboard surfing competition is held here.

My favorite thing to do in Pacific City is relax on the beach at Bob Straub State Wayside. This gorgeous stretch of beach offers a view of Haystack Rock in the distance (and plentiful parking!). A point of detail: Weather like we had in Pacific City recently is not typical. It’s always beautiful—but not always warm enough to comfortably swim!

The Best Oregon Coast Hikes

The Oregon Coast is gorgeous. What better way to see it than hiking its many trails? (That’s what we locals do!)

These are a few of the best Oregon Coast hikes, in my humble opinion. They’ll take you to waterfalls, burbling creeks, secluded beaches—even a suspension bridge 100 feet off the ground!

Drift Creek Falls

One of Oregon’s most famous hikes, the Drift Creek Falls trail takes you to a dramatic waterfall and suspension bridge. About 40 minutes from Lincoln City, Oregon, this easy 3-mile hike takes you through dense forest.

At the halfway point of the out-and-back trail, you’ll cross Drift Creek 100 feet up. The suspension bridge sways a bit as you walk but don’t worry, it’s safe!

Cross the bridge for the best views of Drift Creek Falls.

The trailhead gets quite busy, so morning hikes will feel more secluded. Wear layers, as you might feel chilled on this Oregon Coast hike.

Sweet Creek Falls

Just outside Mapleton and about a half-hour inland from Florence, Oregon, you’ll find the Sweet Creek Falls trailhead. This easy Oregon Coast hike takes you along Sweet Creek. The showstopper is a four-tiered waterfall. The layers look a bit like a Pacific Northwest wedding cake!

Small waterfalls pop up along the entire hike. The trail is narrow in parts (bring your mask!) and some parts include metal grate footpaths (which my dog Finn didn’t love).

On a warm day, walk down one of many short spurs to the water. You can play and splash to cool off.

Aim to hike Sweet Creek Falls in the morning. This is a popular trail and gets quite busy later in the day. Aim to arrive at the trailhead by noon at absolute latest.

Note: Sweet Creek Falls escaped a 2020 fire near Mapleton, OR. You’ll likely see burned forest on your drive to this Oregon Coast hike, but the trail is intact and safe.

Saddle Mountain

Not for the faint of heart, Saddle Mountain is a strenuous and steep Oregon Coast hike about 40 minutes inland from Seaside, OR. The 4.5 mile out-and-back trail takes you to the top of Saddle Mountain, where on a clear day you can see the ocean to the west and Mt. St. Helens to the northeast.

Saddle Mountain gets particularly busy during May and June, when wildflowers bloom across the mountain. The hike is gorgeous at any time of year, though.

Bring plenty of water and wear sturdy shoes. The trail gains more than 1,600 feet in a few miles, and some parts of the trail take you over loose rocks.

Note: As of the time I wrote this, the Saddle Mountain trail is closed because of COVID-19 restrictions.

Hobbit Trail

Just north of Heceta Head and 20 minutes outside Florence, Oregon, you’ll find the strangely named Hobbit Trail. Tolkien’s imagined characters would have an easier time than you and I hiking Hobbit Trail: Parts of this short Oregon Coast hike take you through tunnel-like sections of trees better suited for hobbits than fully grown humans.

We’ll just have to duck our heads to get under low-hanging branches.

This short hike takes you to Hobbit Beach. The trail itself is mostly flat, ideal for inexperienced hikers and kids. (Just keep an eye out for tree roots; you don’t want to twist an ankle.)

Hobbit Trail gets crowded, so aim for hiking this in the morning or during the week. The beach is best at low tide, so try to time your visit to coincide.

Munson Creek Falls

Nearly no one has ever seen Munson Creek Falls, the highest waterfall on the Oregon Coast. That’s because the Munson Creek Falls trailhead is tucked away off the beaten path.

Unfortunately, the second half of this trail is currently closed, so you won’t get terribly close to the 319-foot-high falls. That said, this easy hike is just over a half-mile so is great for kids.

Find the Munson Creek Falls trailhead 25 minutes south of Tillamook, Oregon.

Nestucca Bay National Wildlife Refuge

The Nestucca Bay National Wildlife Refuge offers a walk, not so much a strenuous trek. But don’t skip this gorgeous Oregon Coast hike just because it doesn’t get your heart pumping. The views and wildflowers will earn a place in your heart, too!

The Nestucca Bay National Wildlife Refuge lies about halfway between Tillamook and Lincoln City, Oregon. This off-the-beaten-path natural area is off most people’s radar. That’s why when we went on a summer weekend, we only saw a few people the whole time we were there.

The wildlife refuge is a popular spot for bird watching. Its protected status means it’s paradise for animals—except dogs. (You’ll have to leave your pups at home, as they’re not allowed inside the refuge.)

Start your hike by walking through the field to the observation deck. (Keep an eye out for passing whales in the Pacific Ocean!)

Then head to the Two Rivers Nature Trail. This easy 2.2 mile hike takes you through forests and wildflower meadows. You’ll also see the confluence of the Nestucca and Little Nestucca Rivers. The two rivers, combined with the Pacific Ocean, create a rich habitat teeming with birds, amphibians, fish and even elk.

Fair warning: Mosquitoes also like this habitat. We didn’t have any problem with bugs but I’ve heard others complain. Bring bug spray just in case.

Devils Punchbowl at low tide

This Oregon Coast hike is more of a beach walk and exploration than a strenuous hike, but it still deserves a spot on your list of things to do on the Oregon Coast.

Plenty of folks visit Devils Punchbowl, which lies between Lincoln City and Newport, OR. But few people know you can hike inside this hollow rock formation at low tide!

At high tide, waves crash inside this bowl, which geologists think used to be a cave whose roof collapsed. But when the water recedes, you can get a totally different perspective by climbing over boulders and looking for sea anemones.

Hart’s Cove and Chitwood Falls

The Oregon Coast can be dramatic and rugged—and so is the Hart’s Cove Trail. The steep and slippery trail doesn’t make this hike easy, but the payoff is well worth the effort.

After hiking through dense forest, you’ll arrive on a headland high above the Pacific Ocean. Walk through a prairie of native grasses to catch a glimpse of the waves crashing onto the cliffs in Hart’s Cove. You’ll also spy Chitwood Falls—it’s quite far away but still cool to see a waterfall plunging into the ocean.

God’s Thumb hike

I love it when landmarks have colorful names—and I can imagine any deity would give this hike’s a thumbs up! (Sorry, so corny!)

God’s Thumb is an impressive, dramatic Oregon Coast hike in Lincoln City, OR. It’s popular so can get crowded, especially on weekends and during the summer. It’s easy to see why:

You’ll hike just over 2 miles to a headland that looks over the Pacific Ocean—and God’s Thumb, a piece of land that sticks up out of the water. Hiking that last stretch up the thumb is steep and arduous. But the 360-degree views are remarkable.

I recommend this hike even if you don’t go the very last stretch. (Full disclosure: I get crazy vertigo from high places so didn’t hike the last part.) It’s still incredible to see God’s Thumb from the headland.

More Oregon Coast Beaches

Oregon is the only state in the US that has designated every inch of its beaches as public land. That means that as long as you can access the sand by public means (i.e. not tromping through someone’s yard), you can explore to your heart’s content.

And you’ll want to explore as much as you can! Oregon Coast beaches are sometimes sandy and sometimes rocky, sometimes stormy and sometimes calm. They’re always gorgeous.

Oswald West State Park

Oswald West State Park, near Manzanita, OR, is home to one of my favorite beaches. You park just off Highway 101 and hike a half-mile along a creek to get to a short stretch of beach.

Climb around on heaps of driftwood or the basalt cliffs that hem in the half-mile of sandy beach. You can also do as the locals do and surf!

The Oswald West State Park beach is sheltered from the Oregon Coast’s strong winds, since the landscape is shaped like a horseshoe: The cliffs on either end of the beach block much of the wind. That means it’s warmer here than most Oregon Coast beaches!

Cobble Beach

The Oregon Coast has a variety of beaches—some of sand, others of rock—but I don’t know of another beach like this one. Cobble Beach is covered in round basalt stones that, when the tide pushes them together, make a noise almost like hoofbeats.

(Since this is a protected area, you can’t take stones off the beach.)

Find Cobble Beach in the Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area ($7 admission for one day’s entry). You’ll be able to explore this unique beach, check out sea creatures at low tide and admire the Yaquina Head Lighthouse perched on the nearby cliff.

Strawberry Hill

Between Yachats and Florence, OR, you can pull over on the Strawberry Hill Wayside and explore this hidden gem of a beach. Nearly no one stops here, so you’re likely to have the beach (mostly) to yourself.

This section of the Oregon Coast is better known for the twisting Highway 101 and dramatic cliffs, but the beaches are stars in their own right.

Stairs lead down to the beach, so it is not an accessible trail.

Beverly Beach

Beverly Beach is one of the Oregon Coast’s iconic destinations. This beach is right off Highway 101, which makes it an ideal stop for an Oregon Coast road trip.

The thing that makes this Oregon Coast beach truly unique: fossils! See prehistoric creatures preserved in rocks and the cliffs at Beverly Beach State Park.

We also like this beach because of the creek that splits the beach. It’s fun to splash in, and the part of the beach north of the creek is always less busy.

Fogarty Creek

I adore Fogarty Creek in part because it’s an excellent agate beach! I’m a geek for anything related to natural science, so I love walking at a snail’s pace and looking for beautiful rocks.

Low tide is the best time to visit Fogarty Creek, as the beach gets pretty small when the water is high.

The best thing about this beach: Fogarty Creek is super fun to play in! Kids and dogs splash in the water here, which is warmer than the ocean.

This Oregon Coast beach is just a few minutes south of Lincoln City.

Neptune South Beach

If you’re not looking forward to enjoying the beach with hundreds of other people, Neptune South Beach should be on your itinerary.

Just south of Yachats, Neptune Beach mixes a flat sand beach with stones and basalt outcroppings. We love to explore and climb these rocks—basalt is pitted, making for excellent toe- and handholds!

Cummins Creek runs across the sand, and you might find agates here.

Things to do on the Oregon Coast

Exploring towns, hiking, walking beaches—you’ve already read about plenty of things to do on the Oregon Coast. But there’s more!

Whether you’re interested in aquariums, natural landmarks, or tide pools—or if you’re not quite sure what you want to do—this section will give you lots of ideas.

Get ready to fill up your Oregon Coast itinerary.

Oregon Coast Aquarium

We are members to the Oregon Coast Aquarium because my family and I *love* it! Take this local’s advice: The Oregon Coast Aquarium should definitely be on your itinerary, whether you’re taking a Highway 101 road trip or are staying in Newport.

We have a few favorite attractions. The Passages of the Deep tunnel takes you through three different undersea habitats. I could stay forever under the curved walls of water. But that wouldn’t leave time for the tidal touch pool, where you can make the acquaintance of anemones, sea cucumbers, sea stars and more.

Fort Stevens

We love camping at Fort Stevens State Park, but this destination also has a military museum. For a unique thing to do on the Oregon Coast, check out the Civil War-era fort and its artillery.

Typically, volunteers lead tours of the old military site. Guided tours are cancelled for the time being because of social distancing, but you can still explore via a self-guided tour.

Yaquina Head Lighthouse

You already read about one-of-a-kind Cobble Beach; the Yaquina Head Lighthouse is in the same natural area. Split your time between exploring the rocks and admiring this historic lighthouse!

The 93-foot-tall lighthouse stands guard atop a basalt cliff. It overlooks sea rocks, which are protected wildlife refuges. Hundreds of sea birds come to nest here, but it’s a popular birding spot at any time of year.

COVID-19 update: As of the time of publication, the indoor areas at the Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area are closed. Access to all outdoor areas, including Cobble Beach and the paths around Yaquina Head Lighthouse, is still open.

Hunt for agates

Pace of life is nutty for many of us: We rush, rush, rush. All that slows waaaaay down when you’re on the beach hunting for agates.

I love Oregon Coast agate beaches. I walk ever so slowly, keeping an eye out for these see-through, shiny stones. Agates feel more like glass than a typical rock, and they come in gorgeous colors.

You can hunt for agates at Agate Beach in Newport, Bella Beach near Lincoln City, Fogarty Creek near Depoe Bay and Agate Point near Yachats. You’re never guaranteed to find agates, which only adds to the charm and excitement of this fun thing to do.

On a recent trip to the Lincoln City area, one day I didn’t find a single agate. The very next day I found agates—in the same spots I was looking the day before—including some almost the size of my palm!

Devils Punchbowl

You already read about hiking into Devils Punchbowl at low tide. Whether you’re more of a looker than a hiker, or you visit this Oregon landmark at high tide, you may just check out Devils Punchbowl from above.

The best time to check out Devils Punchbowl is at high tide or during stormy seas. That’s because the waves crash into this natural rock formation, sending spray into the air (and sometimes onto onlookers!).

If you’re on a Highway 101 road trip, this is an excellent stop. It’s just a few minutes from the highway and has several picnic tables. Devils Punchbowl is a wonderful view to watch while eating lunch!

Thor’s Well

Have you ever seen the movie How to Train Your Dragons 3? Even if you haven’t, you can imagine the entrance to the dragons’ hidden world, where the sea cascades into a hole in the ocean. Got a good mental picture? Then you’ve just visualized Thor’s Well.

This dramatic destination near Yachats, OR lives up to its Nordic namesake. Just like Thor, the god of thunder, this unique landmark is most exciting during storms.

At high tide or during stormy seas, watch as the waves pummel the rock formations around this area. Water crashes over the stone—then drains into the center of a gaping hole. Thor’s Well seems to swallow the sea itself, never sating its thirst.

Thor’s Well is best seen at high tide. Plan to visit about a half-hour before high tide so you time your arrival right.

Explore tide pools

One of the best things to do on the Oregon Coast is explore tide pools! At low tide, you can spot creatures typically only seen at aquariums.

An up close and personal look at sea anemones, sea stars, sea urchins, crabs and fish is such a unique experience. (Be sure to look only and never remove or disturb these animals.)

Time your visit so you arrive at tide pool beaches 30 to 60 minutes before low tide. That will give you plenty of time to check out the tide pools before the ocean covers them again—until the next low tide.

Run down sand dunes

One of the most unique things to do on the Oregon Coast: visit the sand dunes!

The Florence area is home to Oregon’s best sand dunes, which also happen to be the largest stretch of sand dunes in North America! Check out South Jetty County Park or Honeyman State Park, both just south of Florence, OR. These two destinations offer tall, rolling hills of sand and incredible views.

Honeyman’s dunes run right into a lake, where you can also rent kayaks. (For details on Honeyman State Park, read about things to do near Florence, one of our favorite Oregon Coast towns.) In contrast, South Jetty’s dunes slope down to the beach, as you can see here:

No matter which sand dunes you explore, don’t miss this unique thing to do on the Oregon Coast.

Visit Sea Lion Caves

Did you know that the Oregon Coast is the world’s largest sea cave? This natural rock formation in the Pacific fills with the barks of huge sea lions all year long.

A stop at the Sea Lion Caves, about 15 minutes north of Florence on Highway 101, won’t take long but is worth the trip.

Be prepared: This Oregon Coast activity is both noisy and smelly. (Someone forgot to pass the sea lions a toothbrush.) This just makes the experience of visiting Sea Lion Caves even more memorable.

Go whale watching

If you’re lucky, you might catch a glimpse of whales on the Oregon Coast any time of year. But Oregon’s whale watching season peaks twice: mid-December to mid-January and late February to May.

These stretches are when grey whales migrate past the Oregon Coast, making it much more likely for you to spot these gentle giants.

Many visitors book a whale watching trip with a tour company or charter (for example in Depoe Bay). I’ve seen plenty of whales on my own from the beach!

You might spot a whale spouting water from its blow hole in the distance. If you’re really lucky, you might see a whale up close. I’ve seen whales come a stone throw’s distance from the sand—experiences I’ll never, ever forget.

Watch waves at Devils Churn

Are you sensing a theme? Whoever named landmarks on the Oregon Coast had a penchant for devils and gods. I have a feeling it’s because these spots can be extremely dramatic!

Devils Churn, near Yachats, OR, is no different.

Just a short walk from the parking lot off Highway 101, see the waves crashing into a narrow opening worn down over millennia of tides. You can also access the Restless Waters Trailhead here.

Access to the park is $5 per day.

Amazing things to do on the Oregon Coast

I’m pretty sure you already know the many benefits of raising global citizens: Kids who are globally minded have the communication skills, flexibility and appreciation of diversity they’ll require when they grow up.

Practicing these skills through fun activities will also lead to smoother trips once you can travel internationally again. The activities are also an excellent add-on for distance learning or homeschooling. You can incorporate them into other lessons or create a unit on global travel!

Finally, these virtual travel activities are just plain fun. If quarantine has used up all your ideas to entertain the kids, this post will give you some fresh activities to try!

Go global at dinner

If your family is like mine, then dino nuggets and mac n cheese probably make a frequent appearance on your table. No matter how picky your kids are, introduce global flavors.

If your littles are used to the typical kid fare, they’re unlikely to dive into a delicious curry dish right off the bat. Instead, start with tastes of side dishes or different takes on foods they already like.

To be transparent, my kids still don’t eat much of what I do. But the simple exposure to the Moroccan lentil soup and huevos rancheros that I eat makes them more likely to try those tastes later on.

As you eat your delicious meal, talk a bit about the culture and geography where the dish originates. Does it include ingredients unique to that country or region? Is it a typical food or a special occasion dish? These conversations will help your kids learn about other cultures and also practice eating unfamiliar foods—which they’ll need to do when traveling internationally.

Print a passport

I love using passports as a conversation starter with kids because they help make international travel feel more concrete. Young children don’t have an easy way to understand abstract concepts like borders or global politics. But give them something to hold—especially something with awesome stamps—and they get it.

You can even download my passport printable in the To & Fro Fam freebies section. That way, each of your kids can have their very own pretend passport.

Every time you virtually visit a country (e.g. with the hundreds of activities in my book, Virtual Travel Activities for Kids), draw a picture of something that represents the place. You can also print a picture of the country’s flag or design your own “stamp” using colors, symbols and destinations related to the country.

Your kids will have fun “collecting” countries!

Travel via your library

Especially during times when you’re not able to travel—whether that’s from budget limitations or a worldwide pandemic—books can open the world to kids.

If your family is interested in a particular place, search for books set in or about that country. We also love books about the nuts and bolts of travel (e.g. The Airport Book) and about many places and cultures (like Walk This World).

Many libraries will collect books you request for pickup, even if they’re not open for browsing. And read aloud videos on YouTube share books your family will love.

Be a tourist in your hometown

I’m pretty sure you’ll agree that it’s easy to overlook the place where you live. But traveling around your town like a tourist can be a wonderful travel experience—and teach your kids some of the skills they need to become world travelers!

Start by researching, just as you would before an international trip. What kinds of things do visitors most enjoy about your town? What are the must-do activities? What have you always meant to do but never gotten around to?

Next, plan a day’s itinerary. This helps your kids practice planning and also understand that they can’t do absolutely everything. That helps them prioritize—an important skill when there are more things to do than time allows!

Then set out for your staycation trip. Really try to soak it in like a tourist who might not get another chance to visit.

For extra fun, buy post cards and send them to friends about your “vacation.” You can also take pictures and make a trip photo book, or do some of the other no-pressure vacation memory projects I recently wrote about.

A trip throughout your hometown may not feel nearly as exciting as an overseas vacation, but it will help teach your kids to be world travelers.

Bring out the atlas, globe and Google Earth

I have vivid memories of playing with my family’s globe when I was a little kid. We’d spin the globe, close our eyes, and stop the turn with a finger. Wherever the finger pointed, we’d pretend to go there.

Exploring the world from home—via an atlas or globe—is a terrific way for your family to do virtual travel.

Check out another country’s terrain, roads and cities in an atlas. Compare distances by measuring with a string between various countries on a globe. Zoom in and out of a location with Google Earth.

To develop their critical thinking skills, compare how each of these represents one country. Why are they visualized differently? What information does each convey? When would you use each?

Let your kids navigate

When we hike, we often pause at a fork in the trail. “Which way should we go?” I’ll ask my kids. Letting them pick signals we don’t always have a defined itinerary and helps them look at travel as an adventure.

You can do the same when exploring a city. Let your kids take point and see where they lead you!

After all, when your kids are world travelers, they’ll be in situations where you’re lost or don’t know which way to turn. They’ll need to be ok with uncertainty and with just taking a leap—or at least a step—into the unknown.

Find friends abroad

When I was little, I loved writing letters to pen pals. By the time I reached middle school, I corresponded with friends in Indonesia, Singapore, New Zealand and Costa Rica.

Your kids can make friends across the world, too. They can go old-school and send letters or post cards. But technology makes finding global friends even easier! They can chat over WhatsApp or Marco Polo, email, or chat on a messenger app (with an adult’s supervision).

(I really like the book Same, Same but Different. It tells a story of two kids getting to know each other via letters. This children’s book is a terrific way to introduce the concept of pen pals to your littles.)

If your kids are interested, you can ask your friends or social media followers to connect you with another child. Or you can sign up with Interpals, where people go to connect and practice their language skills.

Learn about friends’ backgrounds

Most people have family roots from another place in the world. Some have long histories in the country where you live; others are recent immigrants.

Either way, encourage your kiddos to ask adult friends about their cultural heritage. Your kids will learn about other countries and how interconnected our world is.

Practice the language

The neuroplasticity of kids’ brains means that it’s way easier for them to learn a language than it is for you and me. That means now is the best time to practice another language!

For example, Max and Edie learn Mandarin in school, and Hubs and I have tried to learn alongside them. So when I ask Maxine how many pancakes she wants, I encourage her to answer in Mandarin. The everyday use helps us all practice—which will come in handy once we’re able to reschedule our trip to China and Taiwan.

Even if you don’t have any upcoming trips—or the budget to fly halfway across the world—learning a bit of another language helps your kids grow into global citizens.

And if you do travel abroad, the practice will pay off: It’ll help them orient a little better when they’re immersed in another culture.

Embrace different

I have a real sensitivity around my kids saying “yuck” about food; I have very strong feelings that belittling someone’s food can equal belittling their cultural heritage. So serve your kids food they might not like, and practice alternatives to “yuck.” In our house, I remind them to say, “I don’t care for that.”

That might seem like an insignificant switch, but it’s one step to teaching kids that different doesn’t equal bad.

Children need to learn cultural intelligence to thrive in the 21st century. Cultural intelligence allows us to interact, learn from and appreciate people with different cultural backgrounds.

So any time you hear them (or yourself!) saying that something is “weird” about another place, check yourselves. Come up with a different way to talk about it. Try:

• “I had never thought of doing it that way before.”
• “I wonder why we do this differently.”
• “That’s neat! I wonder if people in other places have even more ways of doing this.”

This one is my favorite:

• “Isn’t it cool that there are so many ways to do things! The world would be a pretty boring place if we were all the same.”

Teach them about their roots

No need to go in-depth with your 23 And Me results (unless your kids are a little older), but you can talk to your kids about where your family comes from. It’ll all be abstract to littles, but understanding that just about everyone comes from somewhere else will expand their idea of the world.

Once you’ve IDed where your ancestors come from, explore those places virtually. You might know the city, town or region where your ancestors came from—if so, check it out through Google maps, videos on YouTube or the websites of cultural attractions there.

Even if you know only the country, learn about what it’s like there today and what it was like during the time when your ancestors left.

Record what your kids say to remember this vacation forever

Your kids may surprise you by what they come up with! These family conversation starters about travel will surely spark some memorable discussions.

But you know how it goes: You swear you’ll never forget the adorable things your kids say, and then poof: It slips your mind.

If you’re intentional, though, you can write down what they say so you’ll remember their responses forever!

1. Write them on a post card

You know those post cards you bought at the museum or gift shop? You might not send them all, so use one to write down your kids’ responses to your conversation starters.

2. Put them in your travel journal

I love keeping a notebook with me when I travel. Sometimes I just jot down the name of a restaurant I want to try or directions to the metro. Other times, I write down interesting things I saw or thoughts that occur to me while I explore.

You can also use a travel journal or notebook to record what your whole family says in response to these questions!

3. Write them in your calendar

Some folks keep their planners or wall calendars as records of their year. You can jot down notes to record in your calendar or planner once you get home, since you probably don’t bring them on vacation. Then you’ll always remember the day your munchkin tried wasabi for the first time or befriended the guy who opened fresh coconuts with a machete.

4. Take videos

Press “record” on your camera’s video settings before you ask the conversation starter of the night. You never know what you’re going to capture your kids saying!

5. Record them in your Project Life travel binder

Right now I’m super into the Becky Higgins Project Life system. It’s kind of like scrapbooking, but waaaaay less involved. I’ve been working on creating a Project Life Travel album, using a 12×12″ album and the Wander Core Kit, which has a huge variety of travel-related add-ons.

]]> Once spring comes, Portland—and the rest of Oregon—gets outside and refuses to go back in. The flowers in Portland are the same way: They start to bloom at the first sign of spring and keep on going until the frosts in the fall. It’s no wonder flower festivals in Portland are such a draw for locals and visitors alike!

After all, flowers in the Portland area are the perfect antidote to a long, grey, drizzly winter. You can’t help but smile at the sight of tulips, roses or dahlias.

The thought of flower festivals in Portland keeps me going through the winter, in part because going to a flower farm is one of my family’s favorite activities in Oregon. We enjoy the flowers in the field—and of course bring home a bouquet to brighten up the house!

We first started going to the tulip festival in Oregon—or, as I like to think of it, the gateway drug to Oregon flower festivals. But once I realized this state grows much more than tulips, I began seeing flower festivals everywhere!

So if you’re planning travel to Oregon this spring or summer, these best places to walk among the flowers in Portland area are must-see destinations.

Our 10 favorite places to see flowers in Portland

Ready to stop and smell the roses—and lavender, and tulips, and lots of other flowers in Portland? Here are our favorite spots to take in the blooms.

Wooden Shoe Tulip Festival in Oregon

The Wooden Shoe Tulip Festival is the most famous flower festival in Portland. Millions of tulips bloom at this tulip festival in Oregon every spring, creating fields of vibrant color my kids and I absolutely love to explore.

Know that the Wooden Shoe Tulip Festival is a working farm—so it does get muddy on rainy days! (Spring days in Oregon are as temperamental as a toddler—you never know if you’ll get sunny skies or a downpour.) Wear boots and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty because if your kids are anything like mine, they’ll find the first puddle and fall butt-first into it.

The tulip festival near Portland also has vendors, food, a playground my kids love and some family-friendly attractions, such as a bounce house and pony rides (for an additional charge). Weekends draw big crowds as well as extra activities—like hot air balloons!

If you’re looking for flowers in the Portland area this spring, you can’t miss the Wooden Shoe Tulip Festival—the biggest and most colorful tulip festival in Oregon.

(2019 update: The late snows and frost in Oregon delayed the tulip blooms. According to the festival, the second week of April should be the best time to visit the tulips.)

Rhododendrons in Portland

These native flowers, which grow on bushes that can grow several stories tall, are everywhere in Oregon. They thrive in the Pacific Northwest’s rainy climate, and their peak bloom is usually in May.

There’s a rhododendron festival near Portland in Florence, OR on the coast, but you don’t have to drive that far to enjoy them. The Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden is a gorgeous place to see these flowers in Portland.

It’s a meticulously designed and landscaped garden on 9 1/2 acres near Reed College. Your kids will love seeing the ducks on the rhododendron garden’s ponds and marshlands, and the variety of rhodies will impress any flower-lover.

Camas flowers in Portland

I know, you’re thinking, What in the world is camas? Although this wildflower is much less well known than the other flowers in Portland, it was critical for Native Americans, who ate the bulbs of these blooms.

My favorite place to see camas flowers near Portland is at Camassia Nature Preserve in West Linn. Just three minutes off I-205, a mile-long loop takes you through fields of purple camas when it’s in bloom, usually late April. The trail is mostly flat—perfect for hiking with children—and includes a beautiful view of Mt. Hood on a clear day.

You can also attend the Camas Festival in Tigard in April.

Oregon lavender farms

Get ready to breathe in… and relax. No, you’re not in a spa; you’re in the famous Oregon lavender farms!

Lavender grows extremely well in Oregon, and you’ll find wonderful lavender farms near Portland. Our favorite is Lavender Valley on Mt. Hood, a small farm near Hood River where you can stand in the lavender fields within sight of Mt. Hood’s snowy peak. (5965 Boneboro Rd, Mt. Hood, Oregon)

Early to mid-summer tends to be peak lavender season in Oregon. There are also lavender festivals throughout the summer, where vendors set up their wares, you can wander through the fragrant fields, and you can buy lavender-scented lotions and candles to enjoy back at home.

Irises in Portland

When I was growing up, wild irises popped up every spring in our yard, so I have a special place in my heart for these gorgeous blooms. Luckily, I get to see irises in Portland, too!

The absolute best place to see irises near Portland is a bit south of the city, at Schreiner’s Iris Gardens in Salem, Oregon. It’s a 45-minute drive from downtown Portland and you’ll see 10 acres of every color of iris. Iris bloom season is May, and the garden is open daily during the month.

Weekends have vendors, tastings and of course fresh-cut irises to take home. You can also buy rhizomes to plant at home, and workshops on how to plant and separate irises happen periodically through May.

Cherry blossoms in Portland

The best place to see cherry blossoms in Portland is the Tom McCall Waterfront Park, which winds through downtown Portland. The Willamette River separates East Portland from West Portland and has dozens of cherry trees planted along its banks, which makes it one of the most gorgeous places in Portland every spring.

The timing of cherry blossoms depends on weather, of course, and they don’t last long—particularly because of this region’s rain. But look for cherry blossoms March to April.

While you’re here in Portland, Oregon, stop by the Portland Japanese Garden. The gardens have a weeping cherry tree in the Flat Garden and Yoshino cherry trees in the Strolling Pond Garden. They’re beyond gorgeous places to see flowers in Portland!

If you’re up for a longer drive, visit the Northwest Cherry Festival in The Dalles in late April. There’s a cherry-themed parade, local vendors, samples and of course lots of cherry-flavored goodies.

Roses in Portland

The International Rose Test Garden in Washington Park is home to more than 10,000 rose bushes, which makes it the best place to see roses in Portland. This garden is public so it’s free for anyone to explore; you just have to pay for parking along the street or take public transportation.

The best time to see roses in Portland is June, but they bloom late spring through early fall.

Level 10 travel tip: If you’re in Washington Park to see roses in Portland, you’re right next to tons of other family-friendly destinations! Check out my post on the Portland Japanese Garden, the Oregon Zoo and the Hoyt Arboretum, which are all within minutes of the Rose Test Garden.

Roses bloom across the city, so keep an eye out for these fragrant flowers in Portland. One of my favorite places to see roses in Portland is the Ladd Circle Rose Garden, at the heart of the maze-like Ladd’s Addition, an historic neighborhood in Southeast Portland.

Portland Rose Festival

You can’t talk about flowers in Portland without mentioning the Portland Rose Festival, which happens over several weeks from the end of May to beginning of June. The star event of the Portland Rose Festival is the Grand Floral Parade, which shuts down part of the city to allow for hundreds of floats. You can also literally stop and smell the roses at the festival’s rose show.

Festival of Flowers in downtown Portland

Pioneer Courthouse Square is nicknamed Portland’s Living Room because it’s a central meeting place for everyone in town. The open-air area, which covers an entire city block, is home to live music, a gorgeous fountain, a visitor’s center—and a flower festival in Portland.

The Portland Festival of Flowers is an installation of more than 20,000 blooms. Like everything else in Pioneer Courthouse Square, it’s free and open to the public. This year, it will run May 22-June 4, 2019.

Level 10 travel tip: While you’re in Pioneer Courthouse Square, don’t miss a photo with one of Portland’s most recognizable (and Instagrammable) landmarks—the Umbrella Man!

Dahlia Festival near Portland

At the end of the summer—the last weekend in August and Labor Day weekend—brings gorgeous dahlia blooms. This flower festival near Portland is a half-hour from downtown at Swan Island Dahlia Farm in Canby, Oregon. The festival includes food, music and of course thousands of dahlias in bloom.

Not in Portland during the dahlia festival? Swing by the farm anyway for cut flowers July-September. This farm has cultivated many of its own varieties of the flower. Ask staff which ones!

Where to see flowers in Portland

Once spring arrives in Portland, everyone goes nuts for the outdoors: We’ve earned it after a long, grey winter! So do like a local and take in these flowers in Portland. Between dahlias, lavender, irises, a tulip festival in Oregon and more, you have plenty of options to choose from.

Want to know how I paid zero dollars out of pocket for Disney passes for a family of four? Here’s a sneak peek.

Don’t pay retail for Disney tickets

Normally, for two adults and two kids, a three-day pack of tickets would cost $1,088. After a bit of research, though, I opted to save on Disney tickets by buying through aRes Travel. Our three days of tickets cost $1,014.

aRes emailed me PDFs of our tickets, which I printed out before leaving home. Disney staff scanned them at the park entrance and gave us our actual Disney tickets (which I scanned into the Disney app on my phone—don’t want to lose those babies!). That means they were “straight to gate” tickets—we didn’t have to go to the ticket counter outside the entrance first.

So to buy cheaper Disney tickets, I saved $74 using the third party ticket-seller aRes.

(I am not an affiliate for aRes; I was just really happy with our savings and the ease of using their service.)

Don’t buy Park Hopper tickets

With Park Hopper tickets, you can go back and forth between Disneyland and California Adventure, which are located just across a plaza from each other. Some people do this to take advantage of slow times at certain parks. For example, during the Paint the Night Parade at California Adventure, crowds might be lighter at Disneyland.

We were doing Disney on a budget, though. We opted to not do Park Hopper tickets at Disneyland since we have never been to either Disney or California Adventure. We knew we’d have plenty to do within one park without hopping across the way. What’s more, Park Hopper tickets are significantly more expensive, even with discounted tickets through aRes or similar third party sellers.

To save even more on Disney tickets, I saved $110 by not getting Park Hopper passes.

Cash out your rewards to buy Disney tickets

Here’s the big, big, big way I was able to save money on Disney tickets: I cashed out my rewards on my credit card. I use Chase Sapphire, where I get 1% back on all purchases, plus 5% back on select categories each quarter, without paying an annual fee. (I am not an affiliate for Chase.)

I hardly use my debit card; instead, I use my credit card for buying just about everything. Then I pay it in full every month before interest accrues. Over a few years, I earned $1,531—more than the total cost of our Disney tickets! So you better believe I used this “free” money to pay for our passes.

By using my credit card as a sort of savings plan, I saved $1,088 on Disney tickets by using credit card rewards. 

How to save on food at Disney

Save on restaurants at Disney

Food in Disneyland adds up, especially if you’re buying multiple meals a day for a family of 4.

For example, at Racho del Zocalo—a quick-service restaurant in Frontierland—kids’ meals are $8 and adult meals are around $15. But a fountain drink is $4, so with beverages, expect to pay about $60 for a family of 4. Other quick-service restaurants (e.g. Galactic Grill in Tomorrowland) are similarly priced.

Here’s the thing, though. I hate standing in line for food and paying for a full meal my picky eaters won’t even eat. That’s why I packed food for everyone—and saved money during our family Disney vacation.

We would have eaten three lunches at Disneyland, and at $60 apiece, I saved $180 by packing our lunches.

Save on snacks at Disney

I’ll give Disneyland this: Their restaurant prices are actually fairly comparable to food outside the park. That said, though, drinks and snacks are so expensive inside the park!

Disneyland allows you to bring in outside food and drink—so take advantage and plan ahead for a budget Disney vacation!

Bring a variety of snacks you and your kids can eat on the go—and especially in line. While you’re out exploring the park, your kids won’t want to sit still to eat, but while you’re waiting to meet princesses or ride the carousel, you can totally get your kids some calories.

Here’s a list of snacks we brought in:

• crackers—mini-Ritz cheese sandwiches, cheddar rocket ships from Trader Joes, etc.
• granola bars

Level 10 travel tip: I recommend the ones that aren’t coated in chocolate, as they melt in the heat and get your kids’ hands majorly messy

• fruit—sliced apples, grapes
• veggies—cucumber slices, cherry tomatoes, baby carrots
• dry cereal
• tofu dogs
• sliced turkey and cheese
• fruit leather and squeezie fruit pouches
• hummus and pretzel dip packs

It’s hard to say how much we helped our budget Disney vacation by bringing in food. Conservatively, you’d pay $30 a day in snacks at Disney for a family of 4. So by packing food every day, I estimate I saved $90 by bringing our own snacks.

We did end up eating a few snacks bought in the park, though. We bought popcorn ($5 for a medium-sized carton) and frozen chocolate-covered bananas (also $5 each). My advice for buying snacks inside Disney: Choose wisely. I didn’t mind buying frozen bananas for the girls because it was hot and bananas are actually good for you. And I didn’t mind buying popcorn because I love it (YUM!) and I didn’t buy the super-spendy souvenir popcorn “purse.”

Additionally, look for snacks you wouldn’t be able to get outside the park. My mind explodes at the thought of spending $3.99 on a small container of sliced apples, for example, but you can’t get Dole Whip anywhere else.

Finally, avoid buying beverages in the park if you can at all. Bottled water is $4, as are fountain drinks. Bring in your own refillable water bottles, juice boxes, even pop! I brought in bottled iced tea every day because mama needs her caffeine.

Save on restaurants outside of Disney

Now there’s an iHop right across the street from the Disneyland entrance, but I’m not a giant fan of chains, and I’d rather save money than spend a bunch on low quality food. Most hotels have a free continental breakfast, but the hotel we chose—the Grand Legacy—didn’t. (That’s one reason why a night stay at this hotel is cheaper than others in the same area.)

If you go out to eat at breakfast, you can expect to spend about $7 on a kids’ meal and about $13 on an adult entree. Add in beverages—juice for the kids and coffee or tea for the grown-ups—and you’ll probably pay about $55 for breakfast for a family of four, including tip. That adds up!

Instead, I brought food to eat at breakfast. Two mornings we had quick breakfasts, so I had bananas, bagels, yogurt, milk and cereal as options for our family of four. But one morning we planned a leisurely morning at the hotel—my girls needed extra sleep to recover from staying up late for the fireworks show at Disney. So while the girls slept in, I cooked a super-easy hot breakfast in our hotel room!

With a little planning on our budget-friendly Disney vacation, I saved $165 by eating breakfast with food from home.

Additionally, we ate dinner in the hotel instead of a restaurant. We made sandwiches (I even brought gluten-free bagels from Trader Joe’s for myself). I also bought several premade salads before we left and had those on-hand for our meals.

The girls ate instant macaroni and cheese, yogurt, tofu dogs, make-your-own Lunchables (with crackers, turkey, cheese and cucumbers), and “grilled” cheese sandwiches. We were able to warm up food in the microwave, and we made good use of the mini-fridge.

My kids are picky eaters anyway, and they ate much better in a calm, controlled environment of the hotel as opposed to a restaurant (or when watching an episode of Spirit—ha!). And for a family of 4, it would cost about $75 to eat out—and to throw away all that food my kids didn’t touch.

By heading back to our hotel for dinner (which even left time to go back to Disney for nighttime fun), I saved $225 by making dinner in our hotel room.

Other ideas to save money on restaurants near Disney: Search restaurant.com and Groupon for discounted gift cards you can buy. It’s not uncommon to find a $25 card for $10, for example, which saves a ton!

How to save on hotels at Disney

When I was researching hotels near Disney, I found that paying about $150 per night for a standard two-queen room was about average for a basic hotel. I chose to stay at the Grand Legacy at the Park in Anaheim because it’s a 5-minute walk from Disney and it has a pool.

Rooms at the Grand Legacy are $157 per night during the low season of November. (They may vary depending on when you go to Disneyland.) Instead of paying for the hotel nights, though, I used rewards from a hotel bookings website.

You see, I travel for work, and I nearly always book through the same website so I rack up loyalty rewards. Every 10th night I book, I bank a free night. I saved up my free nights and redeemed them at the Grand Legacy for our family Disney vacation. So by planning a budget Disneyland vacation, I saved $471 on hotels by using a hotel loyalty program. 

Word to the wise, though: We did have to pay $17 per day to park at our hotel. When you’re comparing prices of hotels near Disney, double-check to see if breakfast and parking are included. Those factors may influence where you decide to stay on your budget Disney vacation.

Save on Disney souvenirs

With all the Disney swag being sold on every corner, it’d be easy to double the cost of your Disney vacation just by buying souvenirs! Here are three ways to save on souvenirs.

Avoid the shops

It’s impossible to avoid all the merchandise—after all, every street is lined with shops and stands with blinking, glowing, musical stuff.

That said, the entrances of both Disneyland and California Adventure are primarily stores. They’re not rides or attractions, just places to spend a ton of money! So steer your kids away from these shops and toward the characters who also make this zone their home base.

Buy Disney gear ahead of time

Before we left town, I bought a few items the girls would love—and would want to buy at the park. For example, I bought a plush Minnie Mouse for each child from CVS for $10 apiece—much better than the $30 each inside the park!

I also talked to a few other moms and read up on Disney blogs to find out what other souvenirs kids tend to want at Disney. I went to the Dollar Store and bought glow-in-the-dark jewelry and wands, plus Disney bubbles. When we went to the fireworks show at Disneyland, the first thing they wanted was glowing bubble wands. Lo and behold, I had a version of what they wanted! I had paid $4 instead of $52!

I also brought along crowns we already had so they wouldn’t want to glam out at the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique ($$$$$$) or even buy mouse ears (at $28 apiece). And I ordered Disney character autograph books online for $7 each instead of $20 at the park.

The one thing we did spend an exorbitant amount on: glow-in-the-dark Mickey balloons. The girls asked for them every single day, multiple times a day. They finally wore us down. And that, my friends, is how we spent $30 on two balloons. #AndYetShePersisted

So we spent $68 instead of $238, and I saved $170 by bringing souvenirs from home!

Get a Disney gift card

Our family knew we’d be taking the girls to Disneyland, and so for their birthdays, my mom gave them a Disney gift card. I held onto it for something special that would be a gift from their Nana and Grandpa Shempy.

On our last day, the girls found a toy they absolutely begged for: Jessie and Woody from Toy Story. So I busted out the Disney gift card from Nana and bibbidi bobbidi boo, the girls had their precious toys—at no expense to me! We sent Nana a video of the girls playing with their toys on Pixar Pier saying “thank you!” There was even enough left over to buy milkshakes.

So we saved $69 on toys by using a Disney gift card that was given to my girls as a birthday present.

Dollar by dollar: What I spent on our budget Disney vacation

Budgeting is hard. Budgeting for a budget Disney vacation is even harder. It’s difficult to figure out exactly how much you’ll need for every aspect of a Disney family vacation, so I’m sharing it all in this blog post.

Now that I’ve given you a play-by-play of everything I spent on our budget Disney vacation, it’s time for the grand reveal. Here’s the breakdown of what I spent on our budget Disney vacation:

Park tickets: $1,198 $0

Hotel: $471 $0

Parking: $51

Breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks: $465 $15

One caveat: I didn’t count the money I spent on groceries, since I’d be paying for that at home anyway. I also didn’t include the gas money it took for us to travel to Anaheim, California, since families travel to Disney in all sorts of ways. So as you plan your budget Disney vacation, keep those details in mind: You’ll have to budget for groceries just as you would at home, and you have to figure out transportation.

That’s one reason why I love Florence, Oregon: It’s small enough that you can still call it “quaint,” but big enough to have plenty of things to do, from exploring sand dunes and miles-long beaches to visiting antique shops and Oregon landmarks like Sea Lion Caves or Heceta Head Lighthouse.

That’s why I put together this guide to my favorite things to do in Florence, Oregon. And if you’re time-strapped yet looking for a short getaway, I narrow down all the options to the best itinerary for 24 hours in this Oregon Coast town.

After all, when you’re scheduling a vacation, you may not have a lot of time away. That was definitely the case when my husband and I traveled to Florence—without the kids! It’s hard to arrange childcare, figure out who will take the kids to gymnastics or tutoring, and figure out school pick-up and drop-off while you’re away—all on top of researching and planning your trip.

That’s why I’m writing this post, which shares exactly how to make the most of a day-long quick getaway. 24 hours in Florence, Oregon isn’t a ton of time—but with this vacation itinerary, you’ll feel like you took advantage of the short getaway!

After all, there are so many things to do in Florence, Oregon: gorgeous walks along the Pacific Ocean, rolling sand dunes, high-end restaurants on the mouth of the Siuslaw River, a historic lighthouse and more. Oh, did I mention the saltwater taffy??

Below, I share the best things to do in Florence, Oregon when you’re limited for time. Don’t waste your time researching for hours and hours. Instead, hit the highlights—I’ve outlined them below.

This land belongs to the Siuslaw People. The Siuslaw are now part of the Confederated Tribes of Coos, Lower Umpqua and Siuslaw Indians.

The Best Things to in Florence, Oregon

At the end of summer, my parents (who live in Eugene) were asking when they would get to host the girls for a sleepover. The kids have spent the night at the grandparents’ house without us a few times, and they were excited, too! (I’m sure the YouTube marathons and chocolate milk had nothing to do with it.)

So Hubs and I took a look at the calendar and found a day we could both get away from work for a short vacation without kids. When we were deciding what to do and where to go, we knew we wanted to be close to Eugene (so we didn’t spend most of the day traveling to and from).

We also wanted to be outdoors. Finally, we wanted to feel like we’d actually gotten a getaway—so we wanted to leave town!

That’s how we settled on a kids-free trip to the Oregon Coast. We spent 24 hours in the city and did all the best things in Florence, Oregon, which is less than a 2 hour drive from Eugene.

We had a beautiful time reconnecting, just the two of us. It’s so important to spend one-on-one time with your forever person so you never lose the spark that united the two of you—and that’s just what we did with this quick 24 hours itinerary.

24 Hours in Florence, Oregon

Florence, Oregon is a small town on the Oregon Coast, about an hour and a half west of Eugene. It sits on the merging of the Siuslaw River with the Pacific Ocean, making for a diverse habitat as well as a history of fishing.

Florence, OR is a popular town, but it never feels overrun with tourists. I used to go to Florence for day trips with my family all the time when I grew up in Eugene because it’s incredibly convenient. The beaches in Florence, Oregon are beautiful and wide, and its old town neighborhood is quaint and charming.

So if you’re looking for a round-up of the best things to do in Florence, Oregon—or if you’re staying for a short time and want to know just the highlights—read on!

2pm – Drive to Florence

If you’re driving from Eugene to Florence, Oregon, which is a pretty stretch of Highway 126 in the Siuslaw National Forest, about halfway to Florence you might want a stop. Pause at Morning Glory Farm & Espresso, a cafe and farm stand on the south side of the highway.

It’s an excellent place to stretch your legs, use the bathroom, order a tea or coffee, and buy some goodies like homemade jams. I love stopping at mom and pop places like this, and I always buy an edible souvenir. Once I’m at home, spreading jelly on a pancake or opening up a bag of chocolates reminds me of my vacation.

4pm – Check in at your Florence, Oregon hotel

When you’re staying just 24 hours in Florence, you’ll want to choose a hotel instead of a short-term rental—most places like AirBnB require at least a 2-day stay, and sometimes more during peak season like summer.

Hubs and I stayed at the River House Inn in the Florence Old Town. I was beyond happy with the accommodation and highly recommend it as it’s one of my favorite Florence, Oregon, hotels.

We stayed in a room facing the Siuslaw River, which was well worth the slightly higher rate for the room. (We paid $225 for the king bed room; rates are lower during non-peak season.) From the balcony on our room, we had a perfect view of the Florence bridge and the birds flying over the Siuslaw River.

5pm – Drinks in Florence

Just a block from the River House Inn in Old Town, you’ll find the unfortunately named but delightful Waterfront Depot Restaurant. It’s in an historic building overlooking the Siuslaw River, and it’s always busy because locals as well as tourists know it’s one of the nicest restaurants in Florence, Oregon.

Level 10 travel tip: Make a reservation, even if you’re just having a drink. The bar fills up quickly, too!

If you’re looking for things to do in Florence, Oregon for the 21-and-over crowd, head to the Waterfront Depot Restaurant for vintage cocktails. It also serves craft beers—many of which come from Oregon Coast breweries.

6pm – Restaurants in Florence, Oregon

Hubs and I ate at 1285 Restobar for dinner in Florence. We wanted seafood (since that makes a beach vacation feel even more beachy!), and we wanted to sit outside. This restaurant in Florence has an adorable back patio, but you’re wise to make reservations if you want to sit back there, since it fills up.

I ordered the crab-crusted salmon in a shrimp and caper sauce, and Hubs had the halibut with garlic potatoes. The crispy crust around moist salmon made for a delicious combination, and their Caesar salad dressing (which I ordered with a regular garden salad instead of just Romaine) rounded out my meal. They also serve customizable pizzas and pasta and overall, this is certainly one of the best Florence, Oregon restaurants.

The Restobar also has a nice wine menu. I ordered a pinot gris from Sweetcheeks, a winery just outside of Eugene.

7:30pm – Saltwater taffy!

After dinner, we strolled around Old Town. Many of the shops were closing, but BJ’s—an ice cream and saltwater taffy joint that has been open since I was a kid—pulled us in with its smell of sugar.

Getting saltwater taffy is one of the most quintessential things to do in Florence, Oregon. You practically can’t say you visited the Oregon Coast unless you got saltwater taffy stuck in your teeth!

BJ’s has an entire wall of saltwater taffy, more than 100 flavors to be exact! It’s a tradition of mine to buy one of each flavor that calls to me, then I play the same game I’ve been doing since I was little. It goes like this:

Once you’ve bought your saltwater taffy, reach into the bag with your eyes closed. Unwrap a piece and put it in your mouth. Try to guess the flavor—you’ll be surprised at how difficult it is without seeing the color and the patterns!

8pm – Sunset at your hotel in Florence

The sun sets around 8:30 in the late summer in Oregon, and Hubs and I enjoyed it from start to finish. We opened a bottle of pinot noir, played cribbage and watched the sky turn from blue to pink to purple over the Pacific Ocean.

From the riverside hotel room, we had a perfect view. Isn’t Florence, Oregon just so beautiful?! (And isn’t my husband handsome?!)

8am – Breakfast in Florence

The continental hotel breakfast at the River House Inn is not good—think bagels, dry cereal, oatmeal and fruit. Thanks to my experience traveling for work and staying at chain hotels, I’m an expert at pulling together a decent breakfast with a spread like this. But if you’re on a quick vacation in Florence, you probably want something a little nicer.

As you walk toward Old Town, you’ll smell the chestnut-y aroma of roasting coffee—and just past the bridge underpass, you’ll find out why: River Roasters roasts their own in-house coffee. They also serve delicious pastries, making it one of the best places to eat in Florence, Oregon. There’s also a cute gift shop that skews more toward the upscale and adorable instead of the tacky or kitschy.

If weather allows, you’ll want to sip your drink and eat your muffin outside on the deck, which overlooks the Siuslaw River. If not, there are plenty of seats inside, where locals read the newspaper or play cribbage.

10am – Walk the beach in Florence, Oregon

If you’ve come to the Oregon Coast, you definitely want to spend time on the beach! Visitors from California complain about the wind and the fact the water isn’t warm, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

The Oregon Coast is the only place in the country where all the beaches are entirely public. That’s good, because my go-to beach access spot in Florence, Or is next to Driftwood Shores, the hotel where I often stayed with my family when I was growing up. You can park in the Lane County parking area ($5 fee; you don’t have to pay if you stay less than 45 minutes) then walk about 100 yards down to Heceta Beach.

Make sure you have time for one of my favorite things to do in Florence, Oregon: At low tide, you can walk way out to the water’s edge, and you can stroll north on the endless beach or south toward the jetty. The beach stretches forever!

12pm – Lunch in Florence, OR

One of my favorite mom and pop restaurants in Florence, Oregon is the Little Brown Hen Cafe, on the west side of Highway 101. Inside, it’s like taking a trip in a time machine, where the staff are seriously friendly, you sit alongside stained glass scenes of beaches, and just about everyone seems like a local.

We picked the Little Brown Hen Cafe in part because it has plenty of gluten-free options. Sandwiches can be made with gluten-free bread, and the cafe serves breakfast all day.

You should definitely opt for the “chirps,” which are hand-cut and thin-sliced potatoes which are breaded and then deep-fried. I actually ate a few even though I’m pretty sure they’re not gluten-free. Good grief, they were incredible!

The clam chowder was also delicious and served hot enough to burn the top of my mouth—in other words, just right. In my opinion, the clam chowder here is 100 times better than at Mo’s.

The Little Brown Hen Cafe also makes food to go; if you want, you can grab your meal in a box and head to the Oregon Dunes National Recreational Area, another of my fave things to do in Florence.

Level 10 travel tip: Little Brown Hen Cafe is perhaps the only place left that doesn’t accept cards—it’s cash only, so bring your dolla dolla bills!

1pm – Sand dunes in Florence, Oregon

Just 5 minutes south of Florence, Oregon, you’ll arrive at Honeyman State Park. You’ll find towering sand dunes surrounding a freshwater lake, where you can sandboard (the state park rents boards for $10/day), kayak (all boat rentals are $10/hour) or do like me and Hubs and just goof off in the sand.

My family came to Honeyman State Park at least once a summer when I was growing up, which makes this one of the things to do in Florence, Oregon I always recommend: I have wonderful memories of swimming, climbing, picnicking and—yes—sprinting down the dunes to jump into the lake below.

In fact, within minutes of arriving at Honeyman, Hubs and I were already planning a family camping trip here next summer. (Never too early to start planning a family vacation!)

Level 10 travel tip: Bring a light jacket, even on a summer day, because Honeyman State Park can get windy.

3pm – Antiques in Florence

Before you finish your 24 hours in Florence, Oregon, you’ll want to partake in an Oregon Coast tradition: antiquing.

Florence has a range of antique stores, from the high-end to the junkyard. I prefer the lower end ones in part because you never know what weird, quirky or surprising thing you’ll find. There’s actually an antique store that fits this bill just north of the entrance to Honeyman State Park.

Even if you don’t end up buying anything, it’s fun to explore all the old stuff that has somehow collected here on the Oregon Coast.

4pm – Say goodbye to Florence, OR (for now)

I am always sad to end a vacation, especially a trip without kids—after all, Hubs and I don’t get away together that often. That just makes a kid-free vacation even more special, though.

I always like to end a short trip looking forward to what I’ll do the next time I visit; wrapping up our 24 hours in Florence was no different.

The Darlingtonia State Natural Site, just a few minutes off the highway about 5 minutes north of Florence, Oregon, is entirely dedicated to a carnivorous plant species. Stroll the boardwalk and marvel at the prehistoric-looking darlingtonia, which are nicknamed the cobra lily.

This quick stop in Florence takes just 5 minutes to walk the loop, and it’s a terrific pause if you’re traveling north.

Sea Lion Caves

Drive 11 miles north of Florence to descend 200 feet below this Oregon Coast cliff into North America’s largest coastal cave. The Sea Lion Caves are loud (and stinky) because they’re the natural home to up to 200 Steller sea lions.

Climb the sand dunes at South Jetty

Just on the south side of the bridge over the Siuslaw River, you can access the South Jetty. Full of rolling sand dunes and expansive views, this park is one of the best things to do in Florence. You’ll gaze over more sand than you thought possible! ($5 park access fee)

Heceta Head Lighthouse near Florence, Oregon

A dozen miles north of Florence, the iconic Heceta Head Lighthouse is one of the state’s lighthouses on the National Registry of Historic Places. When you’re done photographing it, walk one of the trails down to the beach below.

Hike Sweet Creek Falls

Just over a half-hour from Florence, OR, you have access to one of the prettiest easy hikes in the state. The Sweet Creek Falls trail winds along the creek and past dozens of little waterfalls on its way to the real showstopper: a 70-foot tiered waterfall that looks like it could be a post card.

Three Rivers Casino

On the nearby Indian reservation land, you can gamble (or simply wander) at the Three Rivers Casino. The casino also hosts concerts and other events, so check out their upcoming schedule if you want some live music!

Clamming in Florence, Oregon

It takes between 1.5 and 2 hours to drive between Florence and Eugene. You’ll drive through the Coastal Range on Highway 126.

How far is Florence, Oregon from Portland?

The quickest way to drive to Florence from Portland takes just under 3 hours. You’ll drive south on I-5 from Portland, to Eugene, then drive west on Highway 126 to reach Florence. You can also take the longer route down Highway 101, or the Historic Coastal Highway, but that trip takes about 3 hours 45 minutes.

Can I go on the beach in Florence, Oregon?

Yes! In fact, you are allowed on any beach in Florence—and the entire Oregon Coast—because it’s all public. The catch: You need to reach the beach via public access, not through someone’s private property. Thankfully there are many beach access points in Florence, including next to Driftwood Shores, the South Jetty and the Siuslaw River Beach Access Park.
