By June 18, 2019June 23rd, 202153 Comments

Manzanita Oregon: I’m not sure how you managed to do it, but you escaped the Oregon Coast kitsch and remain a lovely, off-the-beaten-path gem. I hope you always stay that way.

If you haven’t yet visited Manzanita, Oregon, you’ll want to include it in your getaway plans ASAP. It’s a tiny town of just over 600 people on the Oregon Coast. It’s smack dab in the middle of Seaside and Tillamook on Highway 101, yet it remains a (mostly) hidden treasure.

Eat your heart out at the best Manzanita, Oregon restaurants

On a recent trip to Manzanita, we ate at the San Dune Pub (not a typo; it’s actually spelled like that—I know, very confusing), since I’d read they serve chocolate pie off-menu. Alas, the bartender—who had made the pies before her shift started for something like 14 years—got tired of all that baking, so no more chocolate pie. *sob*

The Sand Dune Pub is one of the main Manzanita restaurants in town and has basic pub fare. My table ordered burgers, fried oysters and salad. The main garden salad is seriously a full meal! This Manzanita restaurant also has a large outdoor patio, though we ate inside under a skylight for beautiful natural light.

Other Manzanita Restaurants

You’ll also want to try the famous cinnamon rolls at Bread and Ocean, a cozy bakery in town that also serves deli salads and paninis. They often sell out of the cinnamon rolls, though, so go early to make sure you get one!

If you’re with the kids and need to grab some lunch quick, order a hot dog from Manzanita Mudd Dog. This hot dog cart has picnic table seating, but I recommend taking it to go and eating it on the way to the nearby Manzanita Oregon beach.

Finally, if you are feeling snacky and don’t want a sit-down restaurant in Manzanita, head to Wild Community Cafe. This down-to-earth spot sells grab-and-go bites, makes espresso coffees and other drinks, and has a small natural food store. Don’t forget to leave a little note in its sweet “Thoughts, Wishes & Whims” jar.

Weekend getaway in Manzanita Oregon Coast

Explore Manzanita Beach, Oregon

The reason you come to the Oregon Coast is the beach, right? Manzanita’s beach is wide and long, leaving plenty of space to slowly walk and let the tide’s rhythm relax you. I literally feel my shoulders ease downward out of my ears the second I take a deep breath on the beach. Ahhhhhh.

When I recently went to Manzanita, Oregon with three girlfriends, we couldn’t help but do cartwheels, jump over saltwater puddles and chase huge flocks of seagulls! (Ok, that last part was just me. I couldn’t help it! The seagulls weren’t impressed.)

Also on a recent day, a nonprofit was teaching small teams of people to sift the sand for microplastic debris. Volunteers were cleaning up the tiny pieces of pollution that continue to break down in the water—and get eaten by sealife (and, eventually, humans). I love to see community action!

One of the best things to do in Manzanita, Oregon, is to explore the great outdoors! Throw a rock and you’ll hit an amazing rock on the Oregon Coast: They’re everywhere! Manzanita is no exception.

My favorite hike near Manzanita, Oregon is a 1-mile round-trip, kid-friendly hike to the beach in Oswald West State Park.

Simply park in the large parking area, a 4-minute drive north of Manzanita, take the walking path beneath Highway 101, and follow the signs to the beach. (Or, more realistically, follow the surfers! It’s a super-popular surfing spot.)

Just a half-hour away is another hike near Manzanita in Ecola State Park. The dramatic bluffs offer amazing views of the Pacific Ocean (and, sometimes, migrating whales!).

Go shopping in Manzanita

If it’s a gloomy day and you’re wondering what to do in Manzanita, Oregon, I have the perfect alternative to hitting the beach – Go shopping instead!Like most other towns on the Oregon Coast, Manzanita has plenty of cute shops for browsing. But what I loved about Manzanita is that not every store has the same-old cheap, touristy sweatshirts as every other place.

Manzanita actually has independent shops where you’ll find unique souvenirs and goodies to bring home.

I loved Moxie, a fair trade boutique that buys from artisans all across the world. I bought my girls each an adorable animal figurine, though these handmade cup cozies were calling my name! (How adorable are they?!)

Shopping in Manzanita, Oregon

Oregon Coast Clothing Co. sells hats, t-shirts and sweatshirts with an edgier style than you typically see in beach towns. In fact, it would be more at home in Portland than on the Oregon Coast, but lucky us! It found its home in Manzanita. I was especially drawn to its muscle tank tops and hats.

Salt & Paper sells pretty much the only postcards in town. And boy are they beautiful! The Oregon Coast landscape photography puts most other postcards to shame, TBH. (I sent one to my family, since I mail postcards to my family wherever I go!)

Bonus: Salt & Paper also sells delicious taffy made in a gluten-free, nut-free factory, so you can eat taffy without worrying about your allergies.

Manzanita, Oregon: My favorite tiny town on the Oregon Coast

I absolutely love Manzanita, Oregon. Its laid-back, independent vibe speaks my language.

If you’re more about exploring tiny towns than fighting crowds of tourists, you’ll want to visit Manzanita, Oregon. Shop in the independently owned stores. Walk the Manzanita Beach. Sip a cup of coffee and eat fresh-baked bread. Simply enjoy this little Oregon Coast town—I know I did.

Have you been to Manzanita on the Oregon Coast? Did I miss any of your favorite things to do there?

    • catherine.art says:

It’s so true. I grew up here and have lived in Oregon much of my life and STILL find new places to love!

  • We haven’t ever been to Oregon and honestly, it wasn’t on the list because it seems to be always in clouds and rain but this looks like a fun spot to check out!

    • catherine.art says:

Haha! It definitely has its fair share of clouds and rain. But the summer is beyond gorgeous, and all that rain makes it GREEN!

  • Tami says:

It’s rare to find a cinnamon roll that meets my high expectations. I’ll travel to Oregon just to see how worthy the ones at Bread and Ocean are. Yum!

    • catherine.art says:

A quest of the perfect cinnamon roll sounds amazing. When you do make it to Oregon, my all-time fave cinnamon rolls are at Kyra’s Bakeshop in Lake Oswego, just outside Portland. YUM!

  • How did you know that Manzanita is my favorite little coastal town?!? Seriously, it is such a cute little place! I love Moxie, too. We’ve been there for the town farmer’s/artisan market behind the grocery store – that was a fun time! There are also a couple of other nice little communities in that vicinity; maybe not as fancy and well-heeled as Manzanita, but pretty cool nevertheless. (Nehalem and Wheeler immediately come to mind.) We are so lucky to have all of our free-and-public beaches and beach communities here in Oregon!

    • catherine.art says:

Yay, so fun to find another Manzanita fan! I love Nehalem, too – I’m a fan of the under the radar towns, and I especially love to stop in them (in part to support local economies). We missed the farmer’s market when we went to Manzanita but would love to explore that next time.

  • Marina says:

Looks like a nice place. Hope to visit soon x

  • I haven’t yet been to Manzanita but I love the idea that there are less people there! Some of the Oregon beaches have gotten SO crowded!!! This definitely sounds like one of the more laid back beach towns on the Oregon coast.

    • catherine.art says:

I know!! Seaside is so lovely, but the crowds on the beach there during the summer are overwhelming to me. I’ll take a sleepy little town anyday.

  • Danielle says:

Such beautiful photos! I did a road trip many years ago from Calgary to California. The Oregon Coast was absolutely stunning and forever in my heart.

  • Justine says:

It looks so beautiful and quaint! We’re going up to Oregon next month but I don’t think we’re going to make it over to the coast.

    • catherine.art says:

There’s so much to see on the Oregon Coast — but leaving it til next time will only inspire a future trip! Let me know if you have Qs or want any recs for elsewhere in Oregon.

  • sam topping says:

I’ve heard great things about Oregon, a diverse state with lots of outdoorsy things to do- sounds like my kinda place 🙂

    • catherine.art says:

Oh my goodness, Oregon has everything! (Look, you started me on my soapbox) From desert to ocean to rainforest to mountains, we got it all. 😉

  • Francesca says:

The Oregan coast is so beautiful and Manzanita looks like no exception. The Salt-Water Taffy looks mouthwatering! I also love Cinnamon Rolls so the ones from Bread and Ocean sound like something I would love.

  • Julie Boyd says:

I’m sad to have missed this little town when I was in Oregon a few months ago! I’ll definitely have to check out Manzanita the next time I am in Portland.

  • Sounds like a lovely place to visit! We especially like that there’s some hiking nearby too!

  • I love Manzanita! It’s where my family always chooses to stay because the beach is beautiful and uncrowded and the town is so quaint and walkable. The next time you go you should check out Sisters & Pete’s Coffees & Treats for pie. We got a whole peach pie to-go on a previous visit and I remember it being delicious.

    • catherine.art says:

Oooh, I’ve never been there! And I’m a big fan of pie (because YUM). Thanks for the rec Jenni!

  • Geena says:

I’ve driven the west coast a million times and never stopped in this little town! Looks like a perfect little hidden gem and those beaches look nice and empty! Definitely stopping there this September when I drive it yet again.

    • catherine.art says:

It’s such a great place to stop! It doesn’t get much attention like the more popular towns on the Oregon Coast, which is one reason I love it.

  • Josy A says:

Oooh this sounds like a great place to explore, especially as a starting point (or end point) for hikes. Or, at least walks along the beaches.

It’s a shame about the chocolate pie, but at least you had that taffy to keep you sweet. 😉

    • catherine.art says:

Haha, so true! I was real sad about the no chocolate pie thing, but I did get some sugar elsewhere. 😉 Perfect for fueling my hike and walk on the beach!

  • Richa says:

You refreshed my sweet memories of the beautiful Oregon Coastal drive we did last summer. And I agree, these small towns on the way were far too cute. I think we stopped at Newport to grab lunch but probably missed stopping at Manzanita.

    • catherine.art says:

Newport is great too. Yeah, you wouldn’t naturally stop in Manzanita – it’s a bit out of the way and in between larger cities. But it’s def worth a detour!

  • Yukti Agrawal says:

I love tiny towns and therefore Manzanita, Oregon is tempting me. It is good that this place has only 600 people as it would be too peaceful and relaxing. Even the restaurants here are quite rustic and unique.

  • timpani says:

I’ve never heard of this place, but Oregon is high on my US bucket list. Manzanita seems like it would be a great stop to make on a road trip through the state.

    • catherine.art says:

Even people who live in Oregon have never heard of Manzanita, so you’re not alone! It’s definitely worth a stop on a road trip tho.

  • Samantha says:

Manzanita is a gem! It is much more laid back than Cannon Beach, and you can get some pretty awesome overlooks to it from Hwy 1. Thanks for sharing a lesser-known part of Oregon’s coast!

    • catherine.art says:

You’re welcome, Samantha! Really, Highway 1 has a ton of incredible views and overlooks, including the ones near Manzanita, OR.

  • Mary says:

This is perfect timing. I was just researching coastal towns to visit next week with my nieces in town. Thanks!

    • catherine.art says:

Oh, that makes me so happy I could help! Have a wonderful time with your nieces! I bet your kiddos are excited for cousin time.

  • Laura says:

I don’t normally think of beaches when I think about Oregon, but this looks lovely 🙂

  • Meghan Emcee says:

Manzanita seems like the perfect vacation spot, with some nature and, shopping ! But to be honest, anytime I see saltwater taffy I’m there!

  • Andi says:

During our 5 weeks on the Oregon coast we stopped and hiked on the beach near Manzanita and one of those rare sunny afternoons and it was glorious! I love this region of Oregon!

    • Those sunny days in Oregon are made even more wonderful by their rarity. Although we tend to have really good luck with the weather on the Oregon Coast. But no matter what the forecast, Manzanita, OR is worth a stop!

  • Talek Nantes says:

Oregon has been on my bucket list for some time. Now it’s a must

  • Victoria says:

I’ve never been to Oregon but have been wanting to go to Olympic National Park. How far away is Manzanita from Olympic?

  • harry says:

Grew up and lived there, in its little suburb of Neah-Kah-Nie, on the cliffs overlooking the north cove. Quite a view from several hundred feet up.

Two men who would become world famous authors , within 18 months of each other,
‘lived in that hamlet (pop. 90) in the 60’s, one as a summer and weekend visitor.

The town will become famous sometime in the next two years.

And that is all the clue you are getting.

  • Rebecca says:

I was born in Oregon. My husband and I visited Manzanita 2 years ago right before Covid hit. We got lucky and were able to get a room right on the Beach here! It was so very relaxing! We got us a yummy Hot Italian Pizza after a walk on the beach. This is our favorite place to visit anymore when we come to Oregon. We are planning another visit for 2023.

    • Catherine says:

Oh I just love meeting other Oregonians – lovely to connect with you, Rebecca! We are definitely on the same page about how wonderful Manzanita, OR is. I’m so glad you’re planning a trip back to the Oregon Coast!
