I’m pretty sure you’ll agree that road trips are the way to travel right now. Most people are avoiding airports, which means folks determined to go on vacation, visit family or otherwise roam are doing so by vehicle. Are you planning a road trip? Then you’ll want to make sure you have these essential road trip supplies.

We’ve been going on a lot of road trips lately, so I 100% get the urge for a change of scenery. But just because you’re in your car for days doesn’t mean you have to accept messes, disorganization or even nonstop fast food.

(This road trip list is an excellent foundation. If you want to go way in-depth to take all the stress out of planning a road trip, check out my new online course, Rock Your Road Trip!)

These road trip essentials will help you keep your car clean, organized and safe. This list will recommend the best products to keep your food safe and tasty. And if you’re adventuring with kids, you’ll want to check out the supplies to keep kiddos organized and happy.

Keep your car organized on a road trip

You can’t control everything about a road trip—construction and weather are out of your hands. But you can control how messy (or not-messy) your car gets.

That’s why I’m sharing these essential road trip supplies to keep the car tidy.

Car charger splitter

Do you and your road trip companions have to take turns charging your electronics? Not anymore! Simply get a car charger splitter, which turns a single electronic port into multiple USB chargers. (If you only need two chargers, I recommend this compact double car charger.)

If your car has a USB charger built-in, plug in a USB hub like this one to turn one charging spot into four. That way you can power up your phones, tablets, cameras and any other electronics—at the same time.

Level 10 travel tip: Charging multiple devices at once is even more important if you’re camping. Everyone’s devices will need a full charge before you stop driving since your tent doesn’t have a power outlet!

Cord organizers

If you’re charging more than one advice, you’ll want to wrangle all those cords. I like these cord organizers for a few reasons. They’re great for bundling multiple cords together (so the front seat doesn’t look like a nest of snakes from all the cords!). We also use them to wrap up long cords when we’re storing them.

Plus, when you buy pack of multiple cord organizers, you can stash them everywhere you need one: in each car, your home charging station and your work desk.

Milk crates

You’ll pack your clothes in a suitcase or bag and your perishable food in a cooler, of course. I recommend packing just about everything else in sturdy milk crates.

Here’s why.

Milk crates are hard-sided, unlike cardboard boxes, so the contents won’t get smashed.

You can see through the sides of milk crates so you know what’s inside at a glance.

Milk crates are stackable.

They’re sturdy, so you can use them on all your road trips to come.

They’re big enough to hold road trip supplies and food but small enough that you can use several and organize your gear.

Wet bag

A wet bag is one of my recommended essential road trip products. Why? It has so many uses!

We’ve used a wet bag to store used cutlery and plates until we can wash up when we arrive at our destination. We put wet swimsuits in a wet bag so our car doesn’t get a musty smell. They’re also critical on the off-chance someone in your group gets car sick.

It’s a good idea to have a set of at least two wet bags, like these pretty ones.

Organize the car for a family road trip

No one wants their nicely packed car to devolve into chaotic mess an hour into your road trip. These are the products and gear I recommend to keep your kids and their stuff organized on a road trip.

And remember, if you’re feeling even slightly overwhelmed by the idea of a family road trip, my online course Rock Your Road Trip is made just for you. In it, I teach you everything from how to pick a destination and plan a route with fun trips to how to organize kids’ gear and stop bickering in the back seat.

Seat back organizer

Seat back organizers keep all your kids’ stuff organized. That means it’s off the floor, less likely to get lost or broken, and more likely to be accessible to your kids. (That all means less whining—WIN!)

I like these sturdy seat back organizers. They even have a clear 10-inch pocket for tablets, letting the kids watch their own movies or shows. They also have lots of pockets for kids’ activities, snacks and gear.

Cup holder organizer

If your kids’ car seats have cup holders, did you know you can use a cup holder organizer? Kids (or adults!) can store pens, markers, electronic devices, headphones and more.

Activity organizer

If your car has a seat between kids’ car seats, a back seat organizer like this one is beyond helpful. It fits in the middle seat and has compartments for books, magnetic games, tablets, art supplies and more.

I like this style of activity organizer because it gives kids access to their own stuff. Road trip hacks are meant to make the journey easier, after all. And when you don’t have to constantly reach back to give your kiddos different activities, everyone is happier!

My kids’ seats are actually pilot seats, so they don’t have a spot to put a back seat organizer. Instead, we use a bin on the ground in between where their feet go. Ours is filled with books. You should hear them read stories to each other—so adorable!

Tablet headrest mounts

If you don’t opt for the seat back organizers I linked to above, you should consider a headrest mount for your kids’ tablets. These tablet mounts attach to the head rest of the front seat. That way your kids can watch a movie or show without craning their necks down at their laps. That just gets them a sore neck.

Kids travel pillow

I cringe when kids fall asleep on a road trip and doze with their heads at seriously uncomfortable angles. That’s why I recommend a kids’ travel pillow like this one, which wraps gently around their neck. It won’t slide off (like the horseshoe-shaped ones), and it supports their little heads.

Kids headphones

If your kids are doing any screentime that you don’t want to hear, get them some headphones. (Personally, I hope to never listen to another episode of Paw Patrol ever. ever. again.)

My kids love these cute headphones. They stay on their heads and don’t hurt their ears.

Suction cup organizer

If you’re driving a minivan on your road trip, this handy road trip hack only works for kids in the third row. (You need to keep windows in the middle row clear so doors can open and close.) Simply stick a suction cup organizer on a window. It becomes an incredibly helpful way for kids to organize and store things like markers, headphones, small toys or their other activities.

**Bonus** Suction cup organizers mean kids will have what they need within reach. They’ll rely on you less to pass back what they need!

Supplies to eat well on a road trip

I love road trip junk food as much as the next person. (Cheddar Ruffles are my jam!) That doesn’t mean I want to eat gas station food nonstop.

These are the products, supplies and gear I recommend for organizing meals, keeping food safe and eating well on a road trip.

Reliable cooler

A cooler keeps all your food cold—and safe—so it’s important to buy one that’s reliable. After all, you don’t want to spend a ton of time (and money) buying ice multiple times a day!

If you want to invest the least amount possible while still getting a cooler that works, I recommend this budget cooler. It definitely does the job!

If you really need to make your ice last, I recommend this terrific mid-price cooler. Ice remains solid longer than in a cheaper cooler, and I like that it has cup holders on the lid.

Snack caddy

Road trip snacks are one of the best parts of hitting the road. Keep all your munchies organized with a snack caddy. We keep ours on the floor between the front seats.

(To be completely honest, I don’t recommend buying a snack caddy online. Most come in multiple packs but you likely need only one or two. You can buy one at the dollar store for a fraction of the price.)

Reusable baggies

Plastic baggies are convenient, but they create so much trash. Invest in a set of reusable silicone baggies instead. Since we bought these, we use so much less plastic.

I recommend storing individual portions of snacks in these so you don’t end up with a bunch of family size chip bags in the front seat. At the start of the drive, simply dole out the amount you’ll want in one of these reusable baggies. Keep the full sized bag in the back. Then refill as needed!

Reliable ice packs

You’ll want to pack your cooler to maximize the ice. (Read my insanely detailed post on the right way to pack your cooler for more tips!) That includes creating a base layer of solid ice at the bottom of your cooler.

You can fill and freeze plastic ziplocks or use ice packs, which last longer.

Reusable cutlery

There’s nothing worse than getting ready to eat your road trip lunch than realizing you don’t have a spoon to eat it with! We avoid this problem by keeping sets of reusable cutlery in the glove box at all time.

You can use silverware from home or buy cute, sustainable reusable cutlery. (I love this pretty pink cutlery set, which comes with its own case.) We wrap the cutlery in cloth napkins and secure the whole shebang with a rubber band.

Waterproof picnic blanket

There’s something charming and nostalgic about picnics, don’t you think? Take advantage of a road trip to eat al fresco!

You don’t want your bum getting wet or dirty, though, so make sure you pack a waterproof picnic blanket. (This checkered one is adorable and it rolls into an easily packable tote.) We always keep one in the car so we’re ready for spontaneous picnics.

Road trip safety supplies

Chances are, the worst accident you’ll have on a road trip is when you spill the Goldfish crackers. Just in case you experience car trouble or some other unexpected issue, ensure you have safety supplies.

In fact, you should keep most of these car safety supplies in your vehicle at all times (not only on road trips). Does your car have all this safety gear?

First aid kit

Hopefully you have a first aid kit in your car already. If you do, check it thoroughly before a road trip. Make sure nothing is expired or missing, and replenish any supplies, like band aids or wipes.

If you don’t have one yet, it’s easiest to get a pre-stocked first aid kit. (It’s more budget-friendly to buy one like this than purchase all the supplies individually.)

Reflectors

If you have car trouble, you need to stay safe while you fix it. That’s why you should have reflective triangles in your road trip safety kit.

I like these reflective triangles because they’re sturdy (i.e. they won’t blow over on a windy day). They’re also approved by the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Reflective vest

You’re not going to win any fashion awards wearing a reflective vest like this one, but it will keep you safe on the side of the road. You want to make sure all traffic can see you.

Emergency go bag

We have an emergency go bag in each car, plus one next to the door in our house. (I bought them shortly after I read that article about an overdue mega-earthquake in the Pacific Northwest.)

I like a pre-stocked emergency go bag like this one. It includes emergency supplies like food and water, plus things like a flashlight and dust masks, for a family of four.

It’s extremely unlikely you’d need to use an emergency go bag during a road trip. That said, I prefer to be safe than sorry. And it’s good preparation to have one just in case, as they could be used in any type of disaster.

Jumper cables

Most people keep a standard set of jumper cables in their car at all times—crucial if you find yourself with a dead battery. Double-check that yours haven’t wandered off!

Raise your hand if this has happened to you: You get off the plane and head to baggage claim, tired and ready to get out of the airport as fast as possible. But when you look for your luggage, there’s a problem: All the suitcases look exactly like yours. You’re stressed because what if someone takes your bags by accident? You and I don’t need that kind of anxiety when we travel—which is why I have my eye on buying new cute luggage sets.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve always used whatever cheap suitcase that got handed down to me. I flew to Ghana for a summer with a suitcase whose zipper was permanently open, and to Singapore with a suitcase whose wheels fell off. Much of my luggage has been held together with duct tape. #KeepingItClassy

So—time for a luggage upgrade!

Are you ready to invest in cute luggage sets, too? I have good news for you:

I’ve done a bunch of tedious luggage shopping for you. In this post, I’m linking to high quality, cute luggage sets so you don’t have to scroll and scroll and scroll some more to find nice and affordable luggage.

Luggage typically goes on sale several times a year. So below, I’ll also tell you the best time to buy luggage.

If you’re anything like me, you’re ready for a luggage upgrade. So let’s get to it!

This post contains affiliate links. By clicking and buying, I earn a small amount of income at no extra cost to you. This allows me to continue to bring you stellar travel content for free!

Cute luggage sets I recommend

Instead of spending hours shopping online or—worse—walking aimlessly through the travel section of a department store, simply browse my curated selection of cute luggage sets.

Basic but colorful luggage sets that stand out in a crowd

I often buy AmazonBasics products—they’re like the generic store brand. Just like the generic cereal at the grocery store is pretty much the same as Cheerios, only cheaper, this AmazonBasics luggage set is comparable to other high-end bags but at a better price.

I like that this three-piece colorful luggage set is easy to spot on the baggage claim carousel, it comes with three varying sizes, and the spinner wheels make them easy to roll. Plus, the geometric pattern on the hard shell exterior takes a basic luggage set up a notch.

Details:

Name: AmazonBasics Geometric Luggage Set
Price: $200
Dimensions: 24″, 28″, and 20″ tall
Features: 360-degree spinner wheels, TSA-approved security locks
Cool bonus: This cute luggage set comes in green, black, cream, pink and orange, and it’s eligible for free Prime delivery

Cute luggage sets that make you feel like you can storm a castle

There’s something about this luggage set from Steve Madden that makes me think of knights’ armor. I’d feel like a bad-ass character from Game of Thrones rolling these suitcases through an airport. Like, Bequeath me that first class upgrade, and I shall not behead you.

And you better bet no one at baggage claim is going to try to sneak away with this luggage set. Can you imagine trying to be inconspicuous with a roll-aboard like this one? Nah, me neither.

Details:

Name: Steve Madden B-2 Hard Cases in Armor Silver
Price: $220
Dimensions: 24″, 28″, and 20″ tall
Features: Eight 360-degree spinner wheels on each suitcase so you have even more control over steering your bags
Cool bonus: This cute luggage set has a 5-year warranty, and this luggage set also comes in a psychedelic purple style that would totally match the fanny pack I’m obsessed with and wear everywhere

Pretty in pink luggage sets

I like to rock my side cut and leather bomber jacket, but I also like being pretty and girly. That’s why I like this pink luggage set. Even if I were taking a red eye flight and had major eye bags, I’d still feel pretty rolling these suitcases through security. And I seriously want nail polish in this color.

But don’t think being pretty doesn’t make this luggage—or me—anything but tough. I can kick serious tush during a boxing workout class, and this luggage’s hard exterior should keep all your gear protected.

Details:

Name: Ginza Travel PP Material Luggage in Light Pink
Price: $160
Dimensions: 24″, 28″, and 20″ tall
Features: 360-degree spinner wheels on each suitcase and TSA-approved security lock
Cool bonus: This cute luggage set has a 2-year warranty and has been shown to withstand being dropped or crushed (because who knows what happens once you check your baggage)

Floral luggage sets

This pretty floral luggage is sweet without being over the top girly. That is to say, I think my husband would also use it without giving me too much grief. That’s important to me because I want a budget luggage set anyone in the family can use: I don’t want to buy luggage sets for every family member!

I also love this floral set of packing cubes and toiletry bags. My packing cubes are so boring. I’d love to get this set!

Details:

Name: Chaps 3-piece spinner luggage set in Navy Floral
Price: $175
Dimensions: 24″, 28″, and 20″ tall
Features: 360-degree spinner wheels on each suitcase and soft sides, which are often lighter than hard cases
Cool bonus: This floral luggage set also comes in red

Eco-friendly luggage sets that make a statement

This adorable 4-piece luggage set makes me feel like I’m about to go on a safari. Even better, the suitcase material is made from recycled plastic bottles!

I like this West African-inspired print, too. I spent a total of about 6 months in Ghana and brought home yards and yards of fabric. Seeing prints that remind me of my time in Ghana make me so happy! And I’m pretty sure this cute luggage set would make me smile, even if my flight got delayed.

Details:

Name: Lily Bloom Luggage 4-Piece Suitcase Collection in On The Prowl
Price: $240
Dimensions: 24″, 28″, and 20″ tall, plus a tote bag
Features: 360-degree spinner wheels on each suitcase and tons of zippered pouches inside the bags to keep your things organized
Cool bonus: I like the tote, which I would totally use on quick overnight trips that didn’t require a whole big suitcase

The most easily spotted luggage sets

When I travel, I’m all about getting through the airport fast: I power walk to my gate, make sure I pee in the lavatory before we land so I don’t have to wait in long bathroom queues in the airport, and grab my checked bag as soon as I see it. That means I’m out of the airport and on to my destination without wasting any time.

This bright yellow luggage set can’t be ignored. Whenever we’re going on a family vacation, I get out their Disney princess luggage so they can play and play with them.

I like that having special kids’ suitcases makes my children feel special. My kids pack all their own clothes for overnight trips to Grandma and Grandpa’s as well as week-long international vacations.

I couldn’t choose just one Disney princess luggage example, so I’m going to include a few.

I like this Disney princess luggage that features Rapunzel, Tiana and Belle:

My kids have a suitcase almost identical to this Elsa luggage:

And this Disney princess suitcase comes with standard 1-day free Prime shipping, in case you are taking a last-minute family vacation:

The best time to buy luggage

The best time to buy luggage is in the late summer/early fall. Why? Retailers figure that at in August and September, most people have already packed for and finished their fun summer travel. Since there’s less of a demand for luggage sets during this time, stores and online retailers are trying to move products off the shelves.

That’s what makes now one of the best times to buy luggage.

March is also an excellent time to buy luggage. That’s because stores get the newest styles of luggage this month, so they want to sell last year’s versions. That’s good news for you if you want to buy luggage sets! You can get the previous year’s models—which are, of course, still perfectly cute and functional. Only you’re likely to get a more expensive set for budget luggage prices!

Why buy a luggage set vs individual suitcases

For years I thought buying luggage sets was silly. I figured I could buy my suitcases piecemeal, save a few bucks and travel well anyway.

Now that’s not how I roll. (get it?!)

I like buying cute luggage sets together for a couple of reasons:

Luggage sets are usually nesting. That means that they fit together like Russian nesting dolls. When you’re not traveling, then, you can store two suitcases inside the largest one, and save a ton of space. Marie Kondo would be proud!

Luggage sets provide a variety of sizes. Sometimes you just need a lightweight carry-on for quick trips. Other times you are going on an extended vacation (or you’re packing the whole family’s gear in one suitcase). And sometimes you’re in between—you need a medium sized bag. That’s why I recommend buying luggage sets, so you have all the options at your fingertips.

Luggage sets give you a discount for buying three bags at once.

Wherever I go, I get compliments on my fanny pack, which I wear on the daily. But almost in the same breath of admiring it, just about everyone says, “I could never pull that off.”

You not only can pull off a fanny pack—you should!

I’ve become a fanny pack evangelist because I love fanny packs. They’re practical. They save me from neck and shoulder pain. And they’re cute!

(Just don’t call my fanny pack a belt bag—I’m not in denial. It’s a fanny pack.)

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-1424" src="https://toandfrofam.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/IMG_2478.jpg" alt="A fanny pack is my favorite travel accessory because it's so practical (+ cute!).
Not convinced? Read all the reasons why I love fanny packs, then get yourself one. At the bottom of this post, I’ve pulled together my favorite ones (including the galactic fanny pack I wear, of course!) and tips on how to wear a fanny pack.

I promise: You can pull this off. Here’s why you should try.

Fanny packs: The ultimate mom accessory

Whether you already rock a fanny pack (high five!!!!) or are wondering how to wear a fanny pack, these reasons to love ’em will have you embracing the 80’s throwback in no time.

1. Go hands free

When you wear a fanny pack, your hands are free to take photos, dole out snacks and hold onto your kids’ hands.

(Even still, my youngest says, “Mama, think of what you could do with eight hands!”)

2. Pockets when you wear leggings

I am an unabashed fan of wearing leggings all the time. I’m pretty sure you agree that leggings 24/7 is the best mom uniform ever: All the comfort and the cute styles without having to worry about what to wear (or a dry cleaning bill).

The only problem with leggings is they have no pockets!

The brilliant solution: Fanny packs. Wearing a fanny pack is basically like adding pockets to leggings.

3. Carry what you need—and no more

If you’re like I was before I started using a fanny pack, your purse is full of stuff. You have whatever you need—and a whole lot more. I would find random toys, doodads from birthday party goodie bags, used tissues and bouncy balls in my purse.

But now that I use a fanny pack, I carry my wallet, phone, keys and a snack for the kids. I have just enough room for what I need so I don’t end up being a pack mule.

4. Hike with just what you need

On a related note, I wear my fanny pack when my family goes on short hikes. If we’re out walking the dog or hiking for just a mile or so, I don’t want to carry a big backpack—it’s overkill. But I can carry just enough with my fanny pack.

5. Find that perfect accessory to babywearing

My kids are 3 and 5 now, so I don’t wear them that often (though I still do on the trail sometimes). When they were smaller, though, babywearing was constant. Yet my Lillebaby carrier (which I absolutely love and still sometimes buy for friends’ baby shower gifts) didn’t include a pocket, so I had nowhere to put my keys and phone.

I started to wear by fanny pack along with my baby carrier and my problem was solved!

6. Stash a secret pocket

My fanny pack has two zippers—the front one, where I carry everything I need, plus one that lies flat against my belly. It’s safe and secure, which is why I carry my passport there when I travel abroad (like here, when I visited Huaca Pucllana in Lima, Peru). I also keep a small set of just-in-case items there at all times: In a snack sized ziplock I carry a few band-aids, several Ibuprofen and a hair tie.

(Wondering where I am in this photo? Check out my post about the best things to do in Lima, Peru.)

7. Save your shoulders and neck

Recently I learned I have several bulging discs in my neck. (Glamorous, I know). Suddenly it made sense why I’d get severe neck and shoulder pain when I wear a purse: Having anything on one shoulder threw me out of alignment and aggravated my injury.

When I wear a fanny pack, I have so much less neck and shoulder pain. We moms are constantly holding a million things at once—a kid on one hip and 40 pounds of groceries in the other hand, for example—and we need to give our bodies a break. Wearing a fanny pack is one easy way I do just that.

8. Stop hitting people with your purse

Moms, you’ve been there: You lean over to see your child eye-to-eye or tie their shoe, and your purse swings forward, bopping them in the face. Ow!

Fanny packs stay put. No more hitting people with your shoulder bag!

9. Avoid gross situations with your purse

You know when you use a public bathroom and there’s no hook to hold your purse? You end up wondering what in the heck to do with it while you do your business. And when you sit down at a café or restaurant, you probably put your purse on the floor, picking up whatever germs other people’s shoes left behind. Yuck.

When I wear a fanny pack, I don’t have to worry about where to hang it. I just keep it on.

How to wear a fanny pack

Now that I’ve convinced you to love this mom-friendly accessory, you might be asking how to wear a fanny pack.

Personally, I wear mine on my front, so it’s actually more of a belly pack. When it comes to how to wear a fanny pack, I prefer it on my front so I can easily grab what I need.

I wear it low over my hips, not around my waist.

You can also wear a fanny pack in the back, over your bum. Sometimes I’ll swing it around this way if I’m carrying one of my kids so it doesn’t get in the way.

On the other hand, if I’m in a crowd, I don’t wear my fanny pack in the back because I worry someone will pick my pocket.

Thirdly, you can wear your fanny pack across your chest. I have friends who do this, making a fanny pack a hybrid shoulder bag. It’s not ideal if you have neck or shoulder pain like me, although it’s better than a purse because it stays close to your body and therefore doesn’t pull you to the side as much.

However, wearing a fanny pack across your chest doesn’t work as well if your bust is on the bigger side.

My favorite fanny packs

Now that you’ve been won over by my fanny pack evangelism, you might be wondering which one to buy. The great news about fanny packs is they tend to be durable but not that expensive, so you can totally buy several and rotate them, just like a (cheaper) purse.

Need some ideas? Check out my 8 favorite fanny packs below!

Glitter glamor

I’m actually putting this glitter fanny pack on my wish list for Christmas/my birthday (since they’re around the same time). I could definitely use a little extra glam in my day-to-day!

Totally radical 80’s throwback

This hologram-like fanny pack makes me want to break out my scrunchie and leg warmers.

Utilitarian and unisex catch-all

If you want something that’s not flashy, this no-frills fanny pack is ideal. (And you might be able to persuade your husband to wear it! Maybe…)

Flirty flair

Sometimes girls do just want to have fun. I like this tropical-inspired fanny pack because it makes me think of beautiful warm weather (and cocktails with umbrellas in them).

Preppy practicality

I love this simple fanny pack because it’s cute (and comes in many colors), but it’s also understated—perfect for traveling moms who might be more comfortable in collared shirts.

Sleek style

Ok, so this red belt bag isn’t actually a fanny pack, but for those of us who need a bit of a gateway drug to fanny packs, embrace this red tailored leather!

Sporty spice

Whether you actually run marathons or just like athletic wear, this sporty fanny pack is adorable and practical.

Space kitties!

You could also buy the space cats fanny pack I wear every day—then we could be fanny pack twins!
