Split, Croatia

Looking for a fantastic place to spend an unforgettable girls trip this year? Then you definitely want to book your girlfriends trip to the breathtaking, beautiful harbor town of Split in Croatia.

Why? First of all, Split is one of the sunniest places in Croatia! Perfect for all who love to soak up sun, relax with the girls and get a tan. And on top of that, the beaches in Split are just amazingly beautiful. Located in the Adriatic Sea, most of them are pebble beaches, with crystal-clear water and surrounded by fragrant pine forests.

A very fun and relaxing thing to do with your girl friends in Rome is to rent a 2-people tandem bike in Villa Borghese and ride around the park together. Be sure to stop by the Pincio Terrace inside the park for an amazing sunset as well!

Prague, Czech Republic

Prague is awesome for a girls’ trip! I should know—I’m a local girl, and have done a fair share of girl hangouts in Prague including bachelorette parties.

Strolling the narrow streets of Prague’s charming Old Town with your girlfriends makes the trip here memorable. Prague has a lot more to offer, though.

The area by the Vltava River, known as Náplavka, is a wonderful hangout spot with several outdoor bars and cafés, as well as Saturday markets and occasional musical performances. Many locals often just bring a bottle of wine and relax, watching the River go by and keeping distance from the curious swans.

You can rent a pedal boat, too, and ride all around Prague’s Střelecký Island. It’s a popular summer activity among local couples or groups of friends.

Prague’s cafés are exceptional too, whether you and your friends prefer classy Vienna-style cafés or modern hipster ones. Bonus: they’re usually quite photogenic too.

Mykonos, Greece

If you are planning a girls’ holiday to a Greek island, Mykonos is perfect! It is the ideal introduction to the magic of the Greek Islands. Mykonos is known for its fantastic beaches and vibrant nightlife. Every corner of the island has something appealing for Instagram!

During the day, the beaches of Mykonos are gorgeous for stretching out and relaxing. If you’re looking to party, some great beaches that bring the fun all day long are Paradise Beach, Super Paradise Beach, and Paranga. Mykonos Town is a central place to stay and there is accommodation to suit all budgets, numerous restaurants and a good bus service that goes to the popular beaches and discos. Scooters and taxis are also available.

If you feel like exploring the island, there is plenty to discover including the quayside restaurants of Little Venice, the shops and boutiques of Matoyianni Street, the tiny 15th-century monastery of Panayia Paraportiani, and numerous lighthouses.

Bucharest

Bucharest is without a doubt one of the best girls’ trip destinations for 2021. Despite its reputation for stag parties, it has many things on offer for female travelers as well. Think affordable shopping, a relaxing spa, and cozy cafés.

Shopping is one of the most popular bonding activities for gal pals, so you must take advantage of the cheap prices in Romania’s capital. There are various modern malls in the city’s suburbs where you can shop till you drop.

If you’d rather use your ladies’ weekend getaway in Bucharest to relax head to Therme Bucharest, an affordable spa providing luxury wellness experiences. Munich, Germany

Munich, the capital of Bavaria in Germany, is one of the best cities you could visit on a girls trip. It’s a great place to unwind, have some fun and make memories together.

The city was heavily bombed in the world wars and there was no authentic old town center left. But it passed through a reconstruction plan that made its historical architecture shine once again. Depending on your interests, you could choose to visit some of the 100 museums, two huge parks, BMW World or the palaces. Don’t miss the opportunity to admire the athletic surfers in the English Garden!

If you want to party, time your visit at the end of September and attend Oktoberfest festival. Millions of people attend it every year and it’s no secret why. 

But Munich is also a great starting point for a day-trip to the Neuschwanstein Castle, one of the most beautiful and romantic castles in the world. What girl could say no to it? When you get back to Munich, spend an entertaining evening at the most famous beer hall in town, Hofbräuhaus. Have some pretzels and beer. Prost!

Tblisi, Georgia

Known for its cozy wine bars, thermal baths and pretty architecture, Tbilisi, capital city of Georgia in the South Caucasus, is a terrific alternative destination for a girls’ trip.

Tbilisi is where most people start their Georgia travel itinerary, but it makes for a great city break all on its own. It’s incredibly safe (consistently voted among the safest cities in Europe), very affordable, and there are plenty of accommodation options to choose from, from boutique hostels to AirBnBs and boutique hotels.

Explore the Old Town with its cute courtyards, carpet shops and mix of architectural influences—a testament to Tbilisi’s spot on the old Silk Road. Rummage the Dry Bridge Flea Market for treasure, split a plate of khinkali, Georgia’s famous ‘soup dumplings’ that are made to be shared, and a bottle or two of Georgian wine, then ride the cable car to the beautiful Narikala Fortress for a city view.

At the end of the day, book a private room at one of the Abanotubani sulfur baths and soak in the healing thermal waters that gave the city its name (Tbilisi means ‘warm place’).

Durbuy, Belgium

Durbuy is fondly called the smallest city in the world. In spite of its size, there are so many interesting things to do in Durbuy and around it, that you can spend 2-3 days on a European girls trip here.

The best thing to do for a group of friends in Durbuy is to spend a day at Adventure Valley Durbuy and go on the longest zipline in the country. You can try other crazy activities like free-fall jumping, a 3D maze with a sky-walk, and an escape room. It’s the best place to have loads of fun with your gal gang.

Next, hire a cycle or e-bike and ride to the beautiful, authentic, quaint little villages nearby.

Though the city itself is very small, it is filled with many hotels. But the best idea would be to book a holiday home in the nearby villages where you and your friends have the entire home for yourself, in charming villages overlooking the breathtaking mountains.

Gdańsk, Poland

Gdańsk in Poland, located on Europe’s Baltic coast, is a great place to head to at any time of year and for any length of time. A weekend in Gdańsk with girlfriends is actually one of the best ways to experience this stunning Polish city. While Gdańsk might be a seaside town, visiting it in the fall or winter is no issue at all (just bundle up!). At this time of year, you are also blessed with no crowds of tourists!

Gdańsk’s star qualities include its walkable main city centre, quaintness and old-world charm, super affordable prices on both food and accommodation for groups, and enough attractions to keep you busy for a few days in the city.

While here, some must-do activities include grabbing a traditional Polish doughnut from Stara Paczkarnia (perhaps every morning you’re here?) and scarfing down as many perogies as you can from one of the Pierogarnia Mandu locations.

Other top attractions include heading up to the top of the Tower at St. Mary’s Church to check out the view over Gdańsk, taking a half or a full-day trip out to Malbork Castle, and spending some time getting lost at the Museum of the Second World War.

Sardinia, Italy

Sardinia is an incredible destination for a girls trip throughout the year, but especially in the summer! This island in the heart of the Mediterranean is very safe for female travelers, and with windy roads galore it’s a great destination for a road trip that takes you from one gorgeous beach to a small charming cove, and through a bunch of charming, quaint small towns.

The island is quite big, so you will be better off picking a smaller area to explore, and devote your girlfriends getaway to it. I recommend flying into Alghero, Sardinia’s Catalan enclave, which has a good selection of places to stay for all budgets, and excellent restaurants. You probably want to treat yourself to a delicious meal. Head straight to Nautilus, but book your table in advance as it can get quite busy. 

From Alghero, you can head north to Stintino, home to the fabulous La Pelosa beach. one of the most beautiful in the world. Continue east and you will be driving along the gorgeous Costa Paradiso, all the way to Santa Teresa di Gallura, a small town right by the sea. From there, you can take boat trips to the nearby Lavezzi and Isola Piana islands, which belong to Corsica, and where you can hike to the gorgeous Cala Spinosa beach.

Not far from Santa Teresa, La Maddalena Archipelago is the best area in Sardinia for boat trips, which will take you to some spectacular beaches such as Cala Coticcio, and to Spargi and Budelli Islands—both uninhabited and highly protected. 

Conclude your trip in glitzy Costa Smerald. It’s a bit more expensive than the rest of the island, but the beaches are just as gorgeous. From there, it’s a quick drive to Olbia Costa Smeralda airport, where you can return your car before flying home.

Seville, Spain

The capital of Spain’s Andalusian region, Seville, is a great destination for vacations. The city is famous for its flamenco dancing and major landmarks. It is one of those less travelled and must-visit destinations that is becoming popular day by day.

Seville is a beautiful city that offers affordable holiday plans. If you want to go on a girls trip within a limited budget, Seville the place for you. The city offers great weather ’round the year and it is best to visit during fall or winter. The wonderful hotels and picturesque surroundings make the city special. 

There are a lot of things you can enjoy with your girls on the trip to the city. These include a private boat trip on Guadalquivir river, visiting the Old Town Of Seville (the third-largest in Europe), admiring the Plaza De Espana, taking a stroll in the city’s streets and more.

Ukraine is still a very affordable destination so you can splurge a bit during your trip. Stay in a fancy hotel or dine out in the upscale restaurants for a very fair price. This is a perfect destination to make long-lasting memories with your friends!

Lake Como, Italy

Lake Como in Italy is often promoted as a romantic destination, but it is also a perfect destination for a trip with girlfriends. 

Como is girl trip-friendly and has everything to please you and your friends: a huge selection of Italian fashion shops, restaurants with delicious local food, parties, lake cruises, and silk goods made in Italy. Silk is actually Como’s trademark. You can buy luxury silk clothing in Como and visit the Educational Silk Museum, Museo Didattico della Seta. Cornwall, United Kingdom

If you’re looking for fun vacation ideas for a girls trip, head to Cornwall in the UK.

This beautiful county is one of the best places for trip with friends— the weather is often better than elsewhere in the UK, the beaches are spectacular and the local food includes delicious pasties, clotted cream teas and locally produced creamy ice cream. Yes that’s a lot of cream! 

There are also countless cute stone villages, plenty of castles and amazing history. There is so much to do, you’ll never fit it all into one vacation, but there are some highlights you should definitely visit on your Cornwall road trip. 

For a great beach, visit Westward Ho! (Yes, the exclamation mark is included.) This is one of the best beaches in Cornwall and there are loads of places to eat, things to do for all ages and surf schools if you want to ride the waves with your friends. 

For history, head to the incredible Minack Theatre or visit the famous Tintagel Castle and Merlin’s Cave, home of King Arthur, the knights of the round table and Merlin the wizard.

Amalfi Coast, Italy

For an epic girls trip, look no further than the stunning Amalfi Coast. Located in southern Italy, the Amalfi Coast boasts of sun-kissed beaches, amazing blue waters, and the prettiest houses on cliffs, making it a much sought after vacation destination for outdoor, beach, and culture lovers.

Start in Sorrento for your Amalfi Coast itinerary. Book your hotel at Sorrento like the Grand Hotel Ambasciatori, a 5-star property with an outdoor pool, and then take day trips to other towns on the Amalfi like Positano, Cerata, Minori, Ravello, and more. Lake Bled, Slovenia

Slovenia is the perfect destination for girls who are looking for a relaxing, budget-friendly, and active trip in the great outdoors. What’s more, you’ll want to go to Slovenia to explore a far too underrated place in Europe.

In the north of the country, you can find the picturesque Lake Bled—a true jewel. There are a lot of different things to do at Lake Bled and in the Bled area, such as rowing in a wooden boat to the beautiful island in the middle of the lake, hiking up to several viewpoints, exploring Bled’s town center, or visiting the Bled Castle).

On top of that, I would recommend trying a piece of cream cake, a typical Slovene dessert, in one of the many cafés around the lake. You’ll need the energy to go on a bike tour around the lake or renting some stand-up paddleboards.

If you are having enough of nature activities after some time, a day trip to the capital Ljubljana, which is only a one-hour car drive away, is also a great idea!

Warsaw, Poland

The Polish capital might not be the first girls’ trip destination that comes to mind, but there are so many things to do in Warsaw that you and your friends will surely love. Plus, it’s a budget-friendly city, so even if you feel like splurging, you can still travel to Warsaw without breaking the bank.

The first thing you should do in Warsaw with your friends is to visit the city’s most picture-perfect spots. These include the colorful Old Town, the Wilanow Palace, and the Warsaw University Library Garden. You can easily spend hours taking photos in these places, which are a feast for the eyes.

Next, indulge yourself in the city’s cozy cafes like Green Caffè Nero, Cafe Kafka, and the elegant E. Wedel. Warsaw is also an amazing shopping destination, with plenty of shopping streets and centers where you’ll find both internationally famous stores and local brands.

Other fun things to do with your friends are taking a street art tour in the Praga district. You’ll also want to plan a night out at Pawilony, a complex of more than 20 small bars and pubs. During the day, relax and recuperate at one of the city’s parks.

Malaga, Spain

Malaga is the perfect destination for a girls trip. Not only for the amazing tapas, the fact it’s got a beach, great shopping, and incredible Moorish remains like the Alcazaba and Gibralfaro. There’s even more!

Malaga city is situated centrally to some of the best hiking routes in southern Spain, with the whole coastline protected by mountains. If your girls love a challenge, why not climb Malaga’s highest peak, La Maroma?

If that’s too much, there are a lot of fun and easier trails you can do like El Saltillo, with Spain’s 3^rd longest hanging bridge, hike the famous Caminito del Rey, or the mesmerizing ravine hike through Nerja’s mesmerizing river, Rio Chillar.

Nerja also has some of the finest kayaking and stand up paddle board opportunities on Costa del Sol with crystal clear water and don’t miss out on Nerja Caves. All of this is just a short drive outside the city. Malaga is also surrounded by astounding Andalusian villages, Frigiliana and Mijas Pueblo being the most famous ones.

French Riviera

The French Riviera in southern France is an excellent destination for a girls trip. The French Riviera is the stretch of coastline that goes from Hyères to Menton, with plenty of destinations in between to choose from.

You can opt for a road trip following the coast or set your base camp in cities like Marseille or Nice and explore the surroundings on day trips. If you decide to stay in Marseille, you can explore the town of Cassis or the beautiful Calanques of Marseille while the list of fun day trips from Nice includes Monaco, Menton, and Cannes.

The French Riviera is a synonym of golden beaches, azure water, casinos, and glamor, but there are also fascinating museums and picturesque villages to explore. And the food and wine in southern France are great! Try the typical dishes like the Niçoise salad, the bouillabaisse or the cassoulet and you definitely need to try a glass of pastis as an aperitif.

Amsterdam, the Netherlands

Reims, France

Reims, France is an idyllic little city in Normandy that is absolutely perfect for a girls trip in 2021—or any other year. Reims is one of the two major cities in the champagne region of France. What could be better than champagne tasting with your best friends while admiring all the eye candy France has to offer?  

The main champagne houses in Reims are Taittinger, Veuve Clicquot, Champagne Pommery, Ruinart, and Mumm.  In neighboring Epernay and the other smaller towns in the champagne region, you can explore other champagne houses on a day trip as well.

There are many other things to do in Reims besides touring champagne houses, however.  For history buffs out there, Reims was an important historical site in WWII, particularly in German capitulation.

Musee de la Reddition is something that should not be missed.  There are a number of other museums and a couple of UNESCO World Heritage Sites as well, including Palais du Tau, St. Remi’s Basilica, and Notre Dame de Reims.  The city is pedestrian-friendly, so getting around on foot is quite easy!

Getting to Reims takes less than an hour from Paris by train, making it doable as a day trip as well.

Havana, Cuba

Havana, Cuba is a Caribbean destination perfect for those looking to experience a new culture and history, not just spend days in a resort by the beach. On your girls trip, you can easily explore Old Havana and experience its colonial buildings and art galleries before ending the day at one of the nearby white sand beaches, making it the perfect destination for a getaway with friends.

Tequila, Jalisco, Mexico

My first Mexican girls’ trip was to Tequila with seven great friends. Our trip was so fabulous that we named ourselves “the Tequila girls” and every subsequent trip, while marvelous in its own right, is always compared to our time in Tequila.

Tequila is one of Mexico’s pueblos magicos (“magic towns”) for good reason. It’s a stunningly beautiful small town that perhaps surprisingly is not the party town you might imagine it to be. Rather, Tequila is the historic homeland of the alcoholic drink, tequila. 

Here you and your friends can visit tequila distilleries and learn all about the tequila making process. You can visit the agave fields and take in the magnificent views, you can drive around town in a comically shaped tour bus (think tequila bottle or guitar-shaped buses). And of course, you can drink to your hearts’ content or you can visit museums and check out the mural in the palacio municipal.  

There is accommodation for all budgets in town and whatever your food requirements are, you’ll be sure to find them. From fabulous market food in Cleofas Mota to stunning plates in Casona Antigua on the main plaza, you’ll be well-fed for sure.

Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

Punta Cana is a perfect destination for a girls’ trip, as it offers everything you need for a pleasant holiday: lots of sunshine, endless beaches, amazing resorts and many activities are an ideal combination for a vacation with a lot of fun.

When coming to Punta Cana, you have the choice between many types of accommodation. You can book an all-inclusive resort with drinks and food included, check out different Airbnbs with unique features and spectacular amenities or have a look at luxury villas, where you have a chef, maid and barkeeper included for getting the party started.

When it comes to the things to do in Punta Cana, you can choose between water, beach or action! Of course, the amazing and mile-long beaches of Punta Cana deserve their fair share of attention, but there are also many other exciting activities where you can have a look at.

For girls’ trips, an excursion on a catamaran is nearly mandatory: enjoying local rhythms, dancing on the deck and sipping on delicious drinks. You can also rent an exclusive yacht if you are looking for some privacy and your group is big enough. Alternatively, if you prefer some action on land, you can have fun while zip lining or going horseback riding.

One of the best destinations for girls who want to have fun in the sun is Aruba in the Dutch Caribbean. Situated in the southern Caribbean and one of the ABC islands, a trio that also includes Curacao and Bonaire, it’s known as One Happy Island for good reason! Not only is it blessed with a wealth of white sandy beaches, but there are so many things to do in Aruba on a girls getaway it’s impossible to be bored for even one minute.

Outdoor activities include kayaking, off-road jeeping, snorkeling cruises and frolicking with flamingos while lounging in your own private VIP cabana on Renaissance Island. Plus, there are fabulous beach bars to choose from (don’t miss the legendary MooMba Beach Bar), a great selection of all-inclusive and boutique resorts, posh restaurants (enjoy cocktails in a Bali bed at Screaming Eagle restaurant) and many activities for exciting evenings out with the girls.

Huacachina, Peru

Most people stick to Lima and Cusco when they visit Peru. But for a unique girls trip destination, head to Huacachina, Peru.

This desert oasis town in southwestern Peru is unlike anyplace else. Enormous sand dunes surround an itty bitty community around an oasis pond. Lodging ranges from budget hostels to high-end hotels so you plan around your girlfriends’ preferences.

Of all the fun things to do in Huacachina, the most iconic is to go on a dune buggy ride and go sand boarding. A small group of friends can fit inside a dune buggy, which will zoom you up and down gigantic hills of sand. Tours also include sand boarding. I recommend timing your tour to finish at sunset!

By day, rent a pedal boat to cruise around the oasis pond or sip a Peruvian cerveza at one of many rooftop restaurants. After dark, you’ll find a thriving nightlife in Huacachina. Hang out at one of the bars that open onto the oasis or check out the weekly parties at hotels and hostels.

If you have a chance, take a day trip to Nazca. You can pay for an airplane tour to see the ancient Nazca lines from above. No matter how you fill your days, this girls trip destination is absolutely unforgettable.

One of America’s best girl’s trip destinations is the East Coast gem of Philadelphia. This city is full of incredible attractions, nightlife, and has a safe and well-lit downtown area. The best areas to look for a hotel or a Philadelphia Airbnb are the Gayborhood/Midtown and Old City. These areas have the best nightlife, restaurants, and things to do.

Philadelphia is a foodie city, so the perfect addition to any girl’s trip is a nice dinner out. One of the best restaurants for an affordable group dinner is Taste of Barcelona in the East Passyunk neighborhood. They have an outdoor patio, a local wine list, and specialize in tapas, the perfect group dinner cuisine.

In the morning, head to Jones in midtown for brunch and bottomless champagne. To sample local favorites like cheesesteaks, soft pretzels and Italian water ice, head to Reading Terminal Market and the open-air food stands.

One fun thing to do as a group is walk through Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens. It’s an indoor and outdoor art installation of mosaics that cover three city lots. You can continue immersing in the art of the city by walking the streets and admiring the thousands of murals in Philadelphia. The city has the most mural art anywhere in the world with almost 4,000 examples and both guided and self-guided mural tours available.

New York City

New York, the city that never sleeps. NYC is one of the most famous cities in the world and one of the best destinations for a girls trip in 2021.

The Big Apple is known for being one of the most popular destinations year-round for good reason: No matter if you go during winter or summer, there’s always something to do, and that’s what makes it so special!

New York City is such a big place filled with so many incredible sights, restaurants, and activities. It’s hard to choose, but here are some of my favorite things I recommend to do in NYC:

Head to the top of the Rockefeller Center and watch the sun go down over Manhattan with your girlfriends! Get some epic shots together while seeing the sky turn a beautiful pink and orange.

Central Park is one of the main attractions in NYC, so what better way to experience it with your girlfriends than with a picnic in the park? After your delicious picnic, head to the MET, gaze at all of the beautiful artwork and finish off your day at the Cantor Rooftop Garden Bar with a delicious cocktail in hand.

Speaking of cocktails, one of the best rooftop bars in the city is the 230 Fifth Rooftop Bar. Not only do they serve up some delicious drinks, it also has one of the best views in New York!

If drinking isn’t what you’re after and it’s more food, be sure to channel your inner Audrey Hepburn and head to Tiffany’s on 5th and 57th for a delicious meal!

Oahu, Hawaii

No matter what your girlfriends are interested in doing, there really is something for everyone’s itinerary on Hawaii’s island of Oahu. And since its warm pretty much year round, it’s the perfect place to catch some winter sun and enjoy the ocean.

It makes sense to stay in the tourist hub of Waikiki. This way it is possible to avoid even hiring a car, since it’s the departure point for tours and you are walking distance from the restaurants and nightlife.

Hawaii is famous for its shopping. Take a stroll on the Waikiki streets but be sure to hop on a bus to head to the outlets for the real bargains. If activity is more your style there are plenty of options for water activities, including cruises, swimming with dolphins and hiking. A climb to the top of Diamond Head is not to be missed!

Head on over to the North Shore for the food trucks, beaches and while you’re there swing by Kualoa Ranch to take in Hollywood’s Hawaii set.

For those interested in history it’s an incredible experience to spend the day at Pearl Harbor taking in the stories and memories of WW2. So no matter if your girlfriends getaway to Hawaii centers around sunbathing your you want a mix of everything Oahu has to offer, you can’t go wrong heading to this island with your best friends.

Las Vegas, Nevada   

Bustling music, fun, and numerous attractions make Las Vegas perfect for a girl’s trip. And you don’t have to be a gambler to feel fabulous here and have a great time.

What makes Las Vegas special?

First of all, amazing hotels like fairy-tales. You can feel like a princess or Egyptian monarch in the famous hotels along The Strip. When booking in advance, you can get attractive prices for accommodation. Some of the most beautiful are the Venetian, New York, Luxor and Mandalay Bay.

Secondly, Las Vegas is famous for its food and cocktails. Its restaurants offers cuisine at the highest level and exceptional service. Seafood, steaks or burgers, cuisines from all over the world, or even vegan dishes—everyone will find something. Moreover, you can enjoy unique cocktails both in the restaurant and in the pool bar.

But most of all, entertainment is what distinguishes Las Vegas from other cities. Is second to none. To have the perfect girls trip take the Roller Coaster at NY Hotel, visit Stratosphere Observation Deck, make Eiffel Tower Experience, go to Gondola Ride at the Venetian Hotel, and see Fountains Dancing at Bellagio Hotel. Don’t forget to splurge on some famous Voodoo Doughnuts. 

Wander the world’s largest used bookstore, Powells Books. It takes up a whole city block and is named one of the coolest bookstores in the world by CNN. Portlanders are proud of it. 

Take a cruise to explore Portland by boat on the Willamette River. The Portland Spirit provides day tours that include lunch, entertainment and beverages. Wander the Portland Japanese Gardens, believed to be one of the most authentic Japanese gardens outside of Japan.

Take a short drive (30 minutes east of downtown Portland) to explore Oregon’s tallest and iconic waterfall, Multnomah Falls. 

Stay at Portland’s most unique hotel, the Kennedy School Hotel. McMenamins renovated the once-abandoned 1915 gem and turned it into a memorable place to stay. 

There really is so much to see and do in Portland for a girls’ getaway. You may find that a weekend in Portland is not enough to experience it all.

Hiking in the Himalayas

It’s December. It’s 2 am. I’m struggling to extract myself from my sleeping bag inside the snug tent. I reach for a bottle to have a sip of water and realize it has turned to ice. I sigh. My fingers brush the snow on the ground. I nudge the figure next to me. “It’s time to go,” I croak. She sighs and nudges the figure next to her. “It’s time to go,” she repeats. We wake up groggily. We are cold and shivering, but our hearts are thudding with anticipation at what awaits: a climb to a Himalayan peak, to watch the sunset at the summit, 13,000 feet above sea level.

A Himalayan mountain climbing adventure can forge and strengthen bonds like no other. Several adventure groups run treks through the year that range from five to fifteen days and are of varying fitness level requirements. I went for a five-day winter trek with my girlfriends and we have stories that we can tell for days: of the body-numbing cold, of climbing eight hours in the snow, of the queues at the toilets, of singing around bonfires, of slipping and helping each other, of being swept away in awe of the grand Himalayan mountain range… It was one of our most favorite trips ever.

Why is Kyoto a great candidate for your upcoming girls’ trip? For so many reasons, to be honest. Kyoto is a great spot on any Japan itinerary, and Japan is probably one of the best destinations to see in 2021.

First of all, it’s safe. It’s sad I put this as a first criteria, but we all know the world we’re living it and no one wants to ruin their vacation due to unexpected events. Japan in general is safer than most places, and they even have train cars for women, so you can definitely feel comfortable here.

Next, Kyoto is so diverse that you’ll definitely find something to do here. Want great food? You got it! No matter if you’re after street food or cool restaurants, you can find them here. Want culture? This is the place to be, as Kyoto used to be Japan’s capital city, and most of Japan’s historic events happened here.

Are you into nightlife? Visit clubs in the Kiyamachi area or head over to any karaoke bar. You’ll find karaoke bars everywhere in Kyoto, you don’t need to put in much effort. Want something even cooler? Try a street kart activity or head to an arcade center, and you’ll have more fun than you thought you will.

Kyoto is also a great place to shop. You can buy modern and traditional merchandise in the Teramachi Street, so head over and start looking for kimonos, hand fans, sake, “Hello Kitty” everything, or whatever else crosses your mind.

If your budget allows for it, I would definitely suggest a geisha experience. No matter if it’s just a walking tour in Gion, or have dinner with a geisha, this is a top activity to enjoy here and I definitely recommend it.

Jaipur is one of the best cities in India for a girls trip. The capital of Rajasthan is slightly less chaotic than the bigger cities and therefore offers a gentle introduction to India. In addition, Jaipur is a beautiful city and has a great number of things to do for women.  

First of all, Jaipur is a great place to go shopping. The colorful bazaar sells souvenirs and handicrafts from all over Rajasthan such as block print textiles, silk saris, jewelery, miniature paintings and perfumes. The bazaar is also a great place to indulge yourself in delicious street food from refreshing lassi drinks to crispy samosas and kulfi ice creams.

Besides shopping it is well worth exploring the pink city’s royal heritage. When you wander through the elegant city palace, the impressive hawa mahal or the amber fort with its beautifully decorated rooms you can imagine what life was like to live as royalty.

You have to start somewhere—and these girls trip destinations are great places to begin. Gather your best friends for a getaway none of you will ever forget.

Cape Town, South Africa

Surrounded by water, with the beautiful Table Mountain providing a backdrop to the city, Cape Town is the perfect destination for a girls’ trip.  It’s also a vibrant, fun city with a lot to see and do.

Going up Table Mountain for its spectacular views is a must. If you enjoy the outdoors, the hike up the mountain is very pleasant (there’s also a cable car, if you aren’t into hiking).

Spend some time relaxing on the white, sandy beaches and have high tea in the lovely Kirstenbosch gardens, surrounded by colorful native plants. Visit Groot Constantia for a winery lunch on the slopes of Table Mountain or, if you have time, take a day trip to the Stellenbosch and the Cape Winelands.

If you aren’t sure where to stay in Cape Town, the V & A Waterfront is a great choice for a girls’ trip. Pick one of the luxury hotels with a view of the harbor and treat yourselves to a nice dinner at one of the delicious seafood restaurants on the waterfront. After a busy day of sightseeing, the waterfront is the perfect place to relax and enjoy cocktails with a view of the city.

Spend a lazy Sunday meandering historic streets and artisan markets in the Rocks. Or, for a break from the city buzz, catch a train to the Blue Mountains National Park to explore the epic lookouts, picturesque waterfalls and a medley of walking trails.

If you’re looking for the perfect combination of culture and relaxation, Santa Fe is your place. To make it a real girls’ trip, start with a visit to the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, where you can admire the work of a true feminist art pioneer. Later on, keep the art theme going with a visit to Canyon Road, a half-mile stretch that features more than 100 galleries, boutiques and restaurants.

Just 10 minutes outside of downtown, you can find your zen at Ten Thousand Waves, a spa inspired by Japan’s mountain hot spring resorts. Reserve a space in the women-only bathing area, featuring outdoor hot tubs based on Japan’s onsen.

While you’re in town, don’t forget to sample plenty of New Mexican cuisine, starting with the legendary Café Pasqual’s. Anything with green chiles is a sure bet, but the enchiladas are a personal favorite. Go early to beat the crowds!

On the drinks front, you’ll want to head to Kakawa Chocolate House for a cup of their drinking chocolate (think melted chocolate in a cup) as well as Secreto Lounge, a craft cocktail bar specializing in “garden-to-glass” concoctions.

If wine isn’t your thing, don’t worry, there are plenty of other things in Fredericksburg to keep you busy. Go hiking at the beautiful Enchanted Rock State Park or step back in time at the Fredericksburg Pioneer Museum before catching a live performance in the evening at Rockbox Theatre.  Nature lovers will also enjoy visiting Fredericksburg’s Wildseed Farm or the many peach orchards in the area. 

Of course, all girl trips have to have shopping, and there is plenty of shopping to keep you busy in Fredericksburg. Walk up and down Fredericksburg’s Main Street to check out some of the cutest boutiques in Texas. While enjoying this shopping excursion, don’t forget your wine or beer as you can have open containers on Fredericksburg’s Main Street! I mean, what is more fun than spending a day drinking wine and shopping with your friends?

Portland, Oregon

I get so excited when anyone comes to visit my beloved town of Portland, Oregon, but especially so when a group of girlfriends come. Portland, lovingly nicknamed PDX, has so much to offer for a girls trip in 2020.

When I do a girls trip, I like to plan something active. That way, we get to talk and catch up while exercising and see something of our destination. Portland has the largest urban park within the United States, so go ahead and hike for a few hours in Forest Park. Then head to the International Rose Test Garden for some of the most stunning views of Mt. Hood from Portland.

Now that you’ve gotten in a good workout, it’s time to relax! Take a yoga class, get a life-changing facial at Kiva, or get a massage at Dosha. (Their location in NW Portland has an epic Hydro Room massage that finishes with an exfoliating treatment and water jets that’s unforgettable.)

To begin your night out, try a champagne tasting flight at Oregon Wines on Broadway. Then head to Darcelle’s, the longest running drag show in the U.S. (Best to buy tickets in advance, as weekend shows almost always sell out.)

When visiting Portland, it’s pretty much a must-do item on your list to eat at the city’s many food carts. If you’re looking for more of a sit-down experience, try the wings at Pok Pok or the Southern comfort food at Screen Door.

I always love to cook a big meal with my friends during any girls trip. To get the freshest, most delicious ingredients, browse the farmer’s market on Saturdays at Portland State. You can’t beat the in-season produce, baked goods and `prepared goodies like ams, chocolate and—my favorite—lemon curd.

Girls Trip 2020 destinations around the world

Reykjavík, Iceland

One of the safest countries in the world, Iceland also has an incredibly diverse range of options to keep everyone entertained, making it a great destination for a girls’ getaway in 2020.

Stay in Reykjavík to combine city life with at least one day trip to see some of the stunning landscape that Iceland is so well known for; the centrally located boutique Sandhotel is a great option.

For a bit of culture, visit the National Museum to learn about Iceland’s past, before wandering up through the Old Quarter and then treating yourselves to a tasting at Omnom Chocolate factory in the Old Harbour. For a relaxed afternoon, explore the quirky independent boutiques along Laugavegur to pick up anything from traditional Icelandic knits to homeware.

There are lots of great places to eat in the city; try Rok Restaurant for a mixture of both Icelandic and international tapas to share among the table, a champagne happy hour and views over the unusual architectural gem that is Hallgrimskirkja church.

For a bit of adventure in style, take a private tour of the Golden Circle to see waterfalls, geysers, black sand beaches and walk in the rift created by the Eurasion and North American tectonic plates in Thingvellir National Park.

Finally, all girls’ trips should include a bit of chill time and where better than the iconic Blue Lagoon for an afternoon of relaxation, complete with in-water massages, face masks and a swim up bar.

Seoul, Korea

Split, Croatia

If you’re looking for the perfect girls’ getaway destination, Split might be the ideal place for you. Located at a very central location at Croatia’s Dalmatia county, this town is bustling with excitement every hour of the day. 

So what makes Split the perfect destination for a girls’ weekend? One of the best things to do in Split is exploring the old town, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The whole area of the old town used to be part of the retirement palace of the Roman emperor Diocletian, and other than beautiful historical monuments, the cobbled alleys are home to cool bars, trendy restaurants and unique boutiques. It also has lively foodie and nightlife scenes so it’s the perfect place to go bar hopping and look for live shows. 

Split’s central location makes it the perfect stepping stone to explore the nearby islands, where you should definitely spend time if you’re able. If you’re only here for the weekend, take an island-hopping tour, go kayaking or just relax at Split’s local beaches.

In the end, Split offers the perfect combination of history, culture, beaches, great food and nightlife—which makes it perfect for a girls’ trip.

Bali, Indonesia

After a relaxing massage in silence, you probably can’t hold it quiet any longer! Head towards one of the many nail boutiques and catch up with each other while your nails get a lovely manicure or pedicure and maybe a new color! 

Bali is, of course, famous for its beaches, so now it’s time to watch the sunset over the waves. Order a cocktail or two, enjoy a delicious dinner and order a sweet desert before you spend the rest of the evening swimming in the pool.

Singapore

Singapore is one of the best places to visit with girlfriends for many reasons, which makes it perfect for a girls trip in 2020.

Don’t forget to book your tickets ahead of time because they sell out! A girl’s trip to Barcelona is one vacation you’ll never forget.

Rio de Jainero, Brazil

Time your girls trip to catch one of the many international performers that play at Hope each year, which have included Elton John and Craig David.

After all, you probably didn’t go into the timeshare presentation planning to buy (and they definitely know that); even still, timeshares are wildly successful—because they manage to sell them even to couples that didn’t intend to buy.

Beat the sales tactic: Take a hard look. Before you step into the sales presentation, know your resources: How much discretionary spending do you have in your budget? How much vacation time do you have? Knowing these facts ahead of time will help you resist the dream of staying in a timeshare property 6 weeks a year if you only get 2 weeks of PTO.

How it worked for us: We had recently bought a minivan (aka #swaggerwagon!) before we attended a timeshare presentation. So to survive a timeshare pitch, we just had to remind each other that any wiggle room in our budget was now caught up in the four wheels that would have to drive us to our more modest, budget-friendly vacations for at least a while longer.

2. Play as a team

The sales pitch: Playing couples off each other. When you have a tangled necklace, you start to tease the chain apart by starting with the looser end. The same goes for timeshare sales techniques: They approach the sale by targeting the more enthusiastic or susceptible half of the couple. Once they have one person convinced, he or she often persuades the hesitant person.

Beat the sales technique: Go in with an agreement. If you’re attending the timeshare presentation just for the free gift or vacation (no judgment!), be up front about that with each other—from the beginning.

How it worked for us: The promise of two free plane tickets and two nights’ stay in a hotel persuaded me to sign up for the timeshare presentation in the first place, and that’s how I convinced Hubs to come (though I also told him I’d cancel it in a heartbeat if he gave a hard no).

3. Have a kill switch

The sales pitch: Now or never. At some point, timeshare salespeople have to close—to make a hard sell. If a potential customer isn’t going to buy, they’ll have to cut their losses and move on, but they’ll use all their timeshare sales tactics to get you to say “yes.”

Beat the sales tactic: Establish veto power. To survive a timeshare pitch, agree that either person in your couple can say a hard no—and that will be the end of the story.

How it worked for us: I signed up for the most recent timeshare presentation while I was at a home show, and the way I got Eric to go to the pitch in the first place was to establish this rule. He knew he could say no and I would agree, regardless of how I felt about it. It cemented a sense of trust between us that neither of us would be pressured, and that we always had a way out if buying a timeshare wasn’t worth it.

4. Know your roles

The sales pitch: Appealing to the more enthusiastic partner. Timeshare salespeople know that one person in the couple is more likely to be open to buying a timeshare, so it makes sense that they appeal to the more gung-ho person. They’ll encourage that person’s enthusiasm or curiosity by encouraging them to imagine a family vacation in one of the wonderful spots they’ll show you.

Beat the sales tactic: It’s easy to get caught up in the possibilities of owning a timeshare property. Being aware that you may fall into this dream—in spite of your logic or any promises you made to absolutely not buy a timeshare—helps prevent some of the in-the-moment excitement.

How it worked for us: Based on our first timeshare pitch experience, we knew I’m more susceptible to the timeshare sales tactics; in Hawaii, I was ready to buy into the timeshare—even though we barely had enough money to pay our cell phone bill! So we knew that to survive a timeshare pitch this time, Hubs would have to stay strong and be the voice of reason during the “discussion time” salespeople leave you to have.

5. Don’t rush

The sales pitch: Claim the deal won’t last forever. Timeshare salespeople create a sense of urgency around buying a timeshare because they’re about a zillion times more likely to sell a timeshare while you’re there in the presentation room. They know they need to close the deal in that moment, and applying subtle pressure to buy immediately makes people more likely to buy a timeshare.

Beat the sales technique: Timeshares have been around for decades, and they’re not going anywhere. Salespeople will show you deals they have just for that day (which are way cheaper than the ones available on other days), but honestly, you’ll always be able to get a good deal if you want.

How it worked for us: Hubs, who was the more level-headed half of our couple and who definitely helped us survive the timeshare pitch, reminded me that we can always sign up for another timeshare presentation down the line if we do decide it’s a good fit for our family. There is no shortage of timeshare opportunities.

6. Evaluate your vacations

The sales pitch: Inspire huge vacation dreams. Timeshare salespeople will show you examples of the most beautiful, luxurious timeshare properties in the most desirable locations to make you imagine the best vacation ever. Bali! The Maldives! Tahiti! They’ll have you dreaming up vacations in places you’d never wanted to visit—until this timeshare pitch.

Beat the sales technique: Before even stepping into the timeshare pitch, you and your partner should talk through the kinds of vacations you take today and the kinds of vacations you want to take in the future. Those kinds of vacations might not match with buying a timeshare.

How it worked for us: During the timeshare presentation, Hubs and I used our family’s lifestyle as a touchstone to resist the sales technique. We do a lot of camping, we bring our dog on most vacations, and many of our trips center around visiting family in locations where the timeshare company didn’t have any properties. In this way, we were able to logically see that the timeshare didn’t actually make sense for our family.

7. Read body language

The sales pitch: Taking cues from body language. Salespeople of all stripes are expert at reading subtle cues from potential customers. Are they leaning forward? Are their hands on the table? Are they constantly looking at the clock? They use this body language to fine-tune their delivery.

Beat the sales tactic: Keep tabs on your partner’s body language, from how they are sitting to what they’re doing with their arms. This will clue you in to see if they’re digging the experience or getting defensive. That way you can mirror their attitude and present a united front to the salesperson.

How it worked for us: At one point in the most recent timeshare pitch we attended, Eric crossed his arms and leaned back in his chair. This body language told me that he’d been triggered by something the salesperson said. Knowing him, I was able to figure out that the salesperson’s tactic—to suggest we were depriving our kids of family vacations if we didn’t buy—touched a nerve. Because I was paying attention, I could see that he was ready to be done.

8. Remember the free gift

The sales pitch: All or nothing. Timeshare salespeople design their presentations to make you feel as if you must buy in the moment—or lose out big. They focus on what you can have with the not-so-subtle suggestion that you’ll have wicked #fomo if you say no.

Beat the sales technique: When you’re caught up in the sales pitch, it can feel as if you lost when you say “no”—even if that was your goal to begin with. You also might leave feeling manipulated or put down. So when you leave, remind yourself of whatever free gift you earn when you survive a timeshare pitch. Having a free vacation to look forward to will help put a positive spin on even a negative experience.

How it worked for us: Before we attended the timeshare presentation, we talked about where we wanted to go. We decided on Phoenix because I’ve never been there, we wanted a destination that was relatively close to our home in Oregon, and we wanted a warm and sunny vacation to take in the winter. So when we left the timeshare pitch, we already had a fun plan to look forward to.

Finally, I hinted that I would buy some new lingerie for our free vacation—and that didn’t hurt either! #hubbahubbah

Are timeshares worth it? That all depends.

This post isn’t meant to be a guide on saying no to timeshare pitches—unless that’s what you want to do. If timeshares genuinely fit with your lifestyle, budget and travel goals, hooray! Buy a timeshare! (or two, ha!)

That said, I don’t love a lot of the timeshare sales tactics, and many of them put uncomfortable pressure on couples. The presentations are crafted to manipulate you into buying, regardless of if buying a timeshare is a right fit for your family.

After all, when you’re scheduling a vacation, you may not have a lot of time away. That was definitely the case when my husband and I traveled to Florence—without the kids! It’s hard to arrange childcare, figure out who will take the kids to gymnastics or tutoring, and figure out school pick-up and drop-off while you’re away—all on top of researching and planning your trip.

That’s why I’m writing this post, which shares exactly how to make the most of a day-long quick getaway. 24 hours in Florence, Oregon isn’t a ton of time—but with this vacation itinerary, you’ll feel like you took advantage of the short getaway!

After all, there are so many things to do in Florence, Oregon: gorgeous walks along the Pacific Ocean, rolling sand dunes, high-end restaurants on the mouth of the Siuslaw River, a historic lighthouse and more. Oh, did I mention the saltwater taffy??

Below, I share the best things to do in Florence, Oregon when you’re limited for time. Don’t waste your time researching for hours and hours. Instead, hit the highlights—I’ve outlined them below.

The Best Things to in Florence, Oregon

At the end of summer, my parents (who live in Eugene) were asking when they would get to host the girls for a sleepover. The kids have spent the night at the grandparents’ house without us a few times, and they were excited, too! (I’m sure the YouTube marathons and chocolate milk had nothing to do with it.)

So Hubs and I took a look at the calendar and found a day we could both get away from work for a short vacation without kids. When we were deciding what to do and where to go, we knew we wanted to be close to Eugene (so we didn’t spend most of the day traveling to and from).

We also wanted to be outdoors. Finally, we wanted to feel like we’d actually gotten a getaway—so we wanted to leave town!

That’s how we settled on a kids-free trip to the Oregon Coast. We spent 24 hours in the city and did all the best things in Florence, Oregon, which is less than a 2 hour drive from Eugene.

We had a beautiful time reconnecting, just the two of us. It’s so important to spend one-on-one time with your forever person so you never lose the spark that united the two of you—and that’s just what we did with this quick 24 hours itinerary.

24 Hours in Florence, Oregon

Florence, Oregon is a small town on the Oregon Coast, about an hour and a half west of Eugene. It sits on the merging of the Siuslaw River with the Pacific Ocean, making for a diverse habitat as well as a history of fishing.

Florence, OR is a popular town, but it never feels overrun with tourists. I used to go to Florence for day trips with my family all the time when I grew up in Eugene because it’s incredibly convenient. The beaches in Florence, Oregon are beautiful and wide, and its old town neighborhood is quaint and charming.

So if you’re looking for a round-up of the best things to do in Florence, Oregon—or if you’re staying for a short time and want to know just the highlights—read on!

2pm – Drive to Florence

If you’re driving from Eugene to Florence, Oregon, which is a pretty stretch of Highway 126 in the Siuslaw National Forest, about halfway to Florence you might want a stop. Pause at Morning Glory Farm & Espresso, a cafe and farm stand on the south side of the highway.

It’s an excellent place to stretch your legs, use the bathroom, order a tea or coffee, and buy some goodies like homemade jams. I love stopping at mom and pop places like this, and I always buy an edible souvenir. Once I’m at home, spreading jelly on a pancake or opening up a bag of chocolates reminds me of my vacation.

4pm – Check in at your Florence, Oregon hotel

When you’re staying just 24 hours in Florence, you’ll want to choose a hotel instead of a short-term rental—most places like AirBnB require at least a 2-day stay, and sometimes more during peak season like summer.

Hubs and I stayed at the River House Inn in the Florence Old Town. I was beyond happy with the accommodation and highly recommend it as it’s one of my favorite Florence, Oregon, hotels.

We stayed in a room facing the Siuslaw River, which was well worth the slightly higher rate for the room. (We paid $225 for the king bed room; rates are lower during non-peak season.) From the balcony on our room, we had a perfect view of the Florence bridge and the birds flying over the Siuslaw River.

5pm – Drinks in Florence

Just a block from the River House Inn in Old Town, you’ll find the unfortunately named but delightful Waterfront Depot Restaurant. It’s in an historic building overlooking the Siuslaw River, and it’s always busy because locals as well as tourists know it’s one of the nicest restaurants in Florence, Oregon.

Level 10 travel tip: Make a reservation, even if you’re just having a drink. The bar fills up quickly, too!

If you’re looking for things to do in Florence, Oregon for the 21-and-over crowd, head to the Waterfront Depot Restaurant for vintage cocktails. It also serves craft beers—many of which come from Oregon Coast breweries.

6pm – Restaurants in Florence, Oregon

Hubs and I ate at 1285 Restobar for dinner in Florence. We wanted seafood (since that makes a beach vacation feel even more beachy!), and we wanted to sit outside. This restaurant in Florence has an adorable back patio, but you’re wise to make reservations if you want to sit back there, since it fills up.

I ordered the crab-crusted salmon in a shrimp and caper sauce, and Hubs had the halibut with garlic potatoes. The crispy crust around moist salmon made for a delicious combination, and their Caesar salad dressing (which I ordered with a regular garden salad instead of just Romaine) rounded out my meal. They also serve customizable pizzas and pasta and overall, this is certainly one of the best Florence, Oregon restaurants.

The Restobar also has a nice wine menu. I ordered a pinot gris from Sweetcheeks, a winery just outside of Eugene.

7:30pm – Saltwater taffy!

After dinner, we strolled around Old Town. Many of the shops were closing, but BJ’s—an ice cream and saltwater taffy joint that has been open since I was a kid—pulled us in with its smell of sugar.

Getting saltwater taffy is one of the most quintessential things to do in Florence, Oregon. You practically can’t say you visited the Oregon Coast unless you got saltwater taffy stuck in your teeth!

BJ’s has an entire wall of saltwater taffy, more than 100 flavors to be exact! It’s a tradition of mine to buy one of each flavor that calls to me, then I play the same game I’ve been doing since I was little. It goes like this:

Once you’ve bought your saltwater taffy, reach into the bag with your eyes closed. Unwrap a piece and put it in your mouth. Try to guess the flavor—you’ll be surprised at how difficult it is without seeing the color and the patterns!

8pm – Sunset at your hotel in Florence

The sun sets around 8:30 in the late summer in Oregon, and Hubs and I enjoyed it from start to finish. We opened a bottle of pinot noir, played cribbage and watched the sky turn from blue to pink to purple over the Pacific Ocean.

From the riverside hotel room, we had a perfect view. Isn’t Florence, Oregon just so beautiful?! (And isn’t my husband handsome?!)

8am – Breakfast in Florence

The continental hotel breakfast at the River House Inn is not good—think bagels, dry cereal, oatmeal and fruit. Thanks to my experience traveling for work and staying at chain hotels, I’m an expert at pulling together a decent breakfast with a spread like this. But if you’re on a quick vacation in Florence, you probably want something a little nicer.

As you walk toward Old Town, you’ll smell the chestnut-y aroma of roasting coffee—and just past the bridge underpass, you’ll find out why: River Roasters roasts their own in-house coffee. They also serve delicious pastries, making it one of the best places to eat in Florence, Oregon. There’s also a cute gift shop that skews more toward the upscale and adorable instead of the tacky or kitschy.

If weather allows, you’ll want to sip your drink and eat your muffin outside on the deck, which overlooks the Siuslaw River. If not, there are plenty of seats inside, where locals read the newspaper or play cribbage.

10am – Walk the beach in Florence, Oregon

If you’ve come to the Oregon Coast, you definitely want to spend time on the beach! Visitors from California complain about the wind and the fact the water isn’t warm, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

The Oregon Coast is the only place in the country where all the beaches are entirely public. That’s good, because my go-to beach access spot in Florence, Or is next to Driftwood Shores, the hotel where I often stayed with my family when I was growing up. You can park in the Lane County parking area ($5 fee; you don’t have to pay if you stay less than 45 minutes) then walk about 100 yards down to Heceta Beach.

Make sure you have time for one of my favorite things to do in Florence, Oregon: At low tide, you can walk way out to the water’s edge, and you can stroll north on the endless beach or south toward the jetty. The beach stretches forever!

12pm – Lunch in Florence, OR

One of my favorite mom and pop restaurants in Florence, Oregon is the Little Brown Hen Cafe, on the west side of Highway 101. Inside, it’s like taking a trip in a time machine, where the staff are seriously friendly, you sit alongside stained glass scenes of beaches, and just about everyone seems like a local.

We picked the Little Brown Hen Cafe in part because it has plenty of gluten-free options. Sandwiches can be made with gluten-free bread, and the cafe serves breakfast all day.

You should definitely opt for the “chirps,” which are hand-cut and thin-sliced potatoes which are breaded and then deep-fried. I actually ate a few even though I’m pretty sure they’re not gluten-free. Good grief, they were incredible!

The clam chowder was also delicious and served hot enough to burn the top of my mouth—in other words, just right. In my opinion, the clam chowder here is 100 times better than at Mo’s.

The Little Brown Hen Cafe also makes food to go; if you want, you can grab your meal in a box and head to the Oregon Dunes National Recreational Area, another of my fave things to do in Florence.

Level 10 travel tip: Little Brown Hen Cafe is perhaps the only place left that doesn’t accept cards—it’s cash only, so bring your dolla dolla bills!

1pm – Sand dunes in Florence, Oregon

Just 5 minutes south of Florence, Oregon, you’ll arrive at Honeyman State Park. You’ll find towering sand dunes surrounding a freshwater lake, where you can sandboard (the state park rents boards for $10/day), kayak (all boat rentals are $10/hour) or do like me and Hubs and just goof off in the sand.

My family came to Honeyman State Park at least once a summer when I was growing up, which makes this one of the things to do in Florence, Oregon I always recommend: I have wonderful memories of swimming, climbing, picnicking and—yes—sprinting down the dunes to jump into the lake below.

In fact, within minutes of arriving at Honeyman, Hubs and I were already planning a family camping trip here next summer. (Never too early to start planning a family vacation!)

Level 10 travel tip: Bring a light jacket, even on a summer day, because Honeyman State Park can get windy.

3pm – Antiques in Florence

Before you finish your 24 hours in Florence, Oregon, you’ll want to partake in an Oregon Coast tradition: antiquing.

Florence has a range of antique stores, from the high-end to the junkyard. I prefer the lower end ones in part because you never know what weird, quirky or surprising thing you’ll find. There’s actually an antique store that fits this bill just north of the entrance to Honeyman State Park.

Even if you don’t end up buying anything, it’s fun to explore all the old stuff that has somehow collected here on the Oregon Coast.

4pm – Say goodbye to Florence, OR (for now)

I am always sad to end a vacation, especially a trip without kids—after all, Hubs and I don’t get away together that often. That just makes a kid-free vacation even more special, though.

I always like to end a short trip looking forward to what I’ll do the next time I visit; wrapping up our 24 hours in Florence was no different.

Darlingtonia State Natural Site

The Darlingtonia State Natural Site, just a few minutes off the highway about 5 minutes north of Florence, Oregon, is entirely dedicated to a carnivorous plant species. Stroll the boardwalk and marvel at the prehistoric-looking darlingtonia, which are nicknamed the cobra lily.

This quick stop in Florence takes just 5 minutes to walk the loop, and it’s a terrific pause if you’re traveling north.

Sea Lion Caves

Drive 11 miles north of Florence to descend 200 feet below this Oregon Coast cliff into North America’s largest coastal cave. The Sea Lion Caves are loud (and stinky) because they’re the natural home to up to 200 Steller sea lions.

Climb the sand dunes at South Jetty

Just on the south side of the bridge over the Siuslaw River, you can access the South Jetty. Full of rolling sand dunes and expansive views, this park is one of the best things to do in Florence. You’ll gaze over more sand than you thought possible! ($5 park access fee)

Heceta Head Lighthouse near Florence, Oregon

A dozen miles north of Florence, the iconic Heceta Head Lighthouse is one of the state’s lighthouses on the National Registry of Historic Places. When you’re done photographing it, walk one of the trails down to the beach below.

Hike Sweet Creek Falls

Just over a half-hour from Florence, OR, you have access to one of the prettiest easy hikes in the state. The Sweet Creek Falls trail winds along the creek and past dozens of little waterfalls on its way to the real showstopper: a 70-foot tiered waterfall that looks like it could be a post card.

Three Rivers Casino

On the nearby Indian reservation land, you can gamble (or simply wander) at the Three Rivers Casino. The casino also hosts concerts and other events, so check out their upcoming schedule if you want some live music!

Clamming in Florence, Oregon

Hubs and I went on a romantic weekend away where we explored all the best things to do in Astoria, Oregon. It was a rare kid-free weekend so we got to take advantage of restaurants, museums, cafes, breweries, and the sweetest bed and breakfast you ever did see. 

My husband and I tend to be pretty low-key about holidays and anniversaries with each other. For the most part, we’ll give each other a card, cook a slightly special dinner, or go on a hike as a family. But for our ninth anniversary, my parents offered to watch the kids for an. entire. weekend. (WHAT.)

This trip to Astoria might have spoiled us. If I have anything to do with it, we’ll be stepping up anniversaries from now on.

Exploring Astoria, Oregon

Thanks to its concentrated population of fishermen and cannery workers, Astoria earned the unruly reputation as being the “most wicked place on earth for its population.” (HA!) Our weekend in Astoria was anything but wicked, though. In fact, it was a sweet, romantic, welcoming town for us to explore on our anniversary vacation.

The weekend in Astoria was the first time Hubs and I have been away from both kids at the same time. We missed our girls, and my parents were definitely tired out by the time we picked up the kids, but a trip away was so worth it. There are so many great things to do in Astoria so no matter whether you’re visiting with your partner, your friends, or your family, you’ll never run out of options of activities to keep you busy.

Unique Things To Do in Astoria, OR

There are so many fun things to do in Astoria, but if you only have a weekend in the city I recommend you add the below activities to your bucket list! They’re a good mix of hiking, drinking, eating and shopping!

Hike Saddle Mountain

Our romantic weekend in Astoria started even before we arrived on the Oregon Coast. We rarely have a chance to tackle challenging hikes, since we have to go at a kid’s pace (or be prepared to carry them). So on our drive to Astoria from Portland, we stopped at Saddle Mountain.

Parts of this 4-mile out-and-back hike are tough: The trail gets really steep, and some of the rocks can slip underfoot. But all the work is worth the sweat and it’s one of the best thing to do in Astoria if you’re in search of adventure!

Atop Saddle Mountain, you get a 360-view of the entire area, from the Pacific Ocean to the west to Mt. Hood and Mt. Rainier to the east. We hiked Saddle Mountain on a clear day, which you’ll definitely want to do, too. The hike took us about 3 hours, so plan accordingly on your drive to Astoria.

Level 10 travel tip: Saddle Mountain bursts into color with wildflowers during the spring, but the crowds increase, too. If you go during peak wildflower time (April), know you’ll be hiking with hundreds of others, and you’ll struggle to find parking.

Climb the Astoria Column

Speaking of heights, you’ll definitely want to climb the 164 steps of the Astoria Column. Set on the top of a hill that overlooks all of Astoria and the Columbia River, this pillar offers beautiful views.

Take your time on the way up. If you’re in decent shape, the number of steps won’t necessarily phase you, but you very well could get a little dizzy circling the spiral staircase!

Level 10 travel tip: You can buy a little wooden airplane from the gift shop at the base of the Astoria Column, which you can launch from the viewing platform. Make sure to plan for this if you go to Astoria with kids!

Hike the Cathedral Tree trail

Within Astoria’s city limits, you’ll find a pristine old-growth forest that makes you feel as if you’re far away, not in the center of town. The Cathedral Tree trail is an easy 1.5-mile hike from the trailhead to the Astoria Column. You’ll park on the road and walk among cedars, Doug firs, and spruce. If you’re looking for fun things to do in Astoria, this is it!

Level 10 travel tip: Follow wooden signs to the Cathedral Tree, an enormous Sitka spruce with a natural nook. And crane your neck to see to the tree’s tippy top—there’s nothing more romantic than feeling small to make you marvel even more that you found your honey.

Visit Astoria museums

Astoria’s Maritime Museum grounds you in time and place with its exhibits on the region’s history. Astoria has been a center of fishing and canning, particularly of salmon, and this museum pays homage to that past. 

You can get a quick taste of this history at the Hanthorn Cannery Museum, which displays photos, boats, and other artifacts. It’s one of the few free things to do in Astoria, but you’re encouraged to give a donation to the nonprofit that preserves the region’s history. Get coffee and a scone at the next-door Coffee Girl cafe, which has been caffeinating Astoria residents since the heyday of canning.

Visitors can also live the dream of their acting career at the Oregon Film Museum, which is housed in the old Astoria jail (where, BTW, scenes from cult favorite Goonies was filmed). You can reenact and film scenes from movies made in Oregon, including The Shining (“Here’s Johnny!”).

Just a block away from the Oregon Film Museum is the historic Flavel House, where you and your partner can imagine living in the romantic home of one of Astoria’s founders.

A romantic weekend in Astoria: Where to shop

Astoria is one of Oregon’s oldest cities, and it has stayed true to its small-town roots by supporting independent businesses. Browse hand-in-hand with your partner among these quirky, uniquely Northwest shops.

Maiden Astoria sells made-in-Oregon gifts like enameled metal camping mugs, delicate jewelry, and scarves; I swooned over the letterpress prints and original artwork.

I could have spent days mining through the treasures in Vintage Hardware. From the big—wall-sized window panes and vintage doors—to the small—a basket of antique keys and old black and white photos—this spot offers gems for home renovation pros and dabblers alike.

Cargo is like a trip around the world without ever leaving Oregon. I bought a gift for my parents as a thank-you for watching our kids, and I probably would have continued to fill my basket with trinkets from Mexico, India and beyond had I not popped in right before the shop closed.

Do & Arrow sells vintage and new alongside each other, staying true to its hip aesthetic. You’ll find vinyl, wool blankets, air plants, leather hats and more in this clothing and home goods shop.

Where to stay for a weekend in Astoria, Oregon

Astoria, Oregon doesn’t allow full-home rentals (only letting out rooms if the owner is on-site), which makes short-term stays like AirBnB hard to find. Eric and I usually rent out a house like this when we travel, but in hindsight, the scarcity of AirBnBs was a benefit.

After all, without that push to go outside our typical rental routine, we would have never been introduced to the beautiful Rose River Inn Bed and Breakfast, just minutes from downtown Astoria.

The Rose River Inn Bed and Breakfast is a quaint, cozy place in a historic home that overlooks the Columbia River—and it was ideal for a romantic getaway in Astoria. We ended up getting the attic suite, which has two beds (enough for two couples or parents plus kids, though on this trip it was just us), plus a private bath and a sitting area. The room was comfortable, and I loved taking a bath in the claw foot tub.

Did I mention the breakfast yet? Because you guys, not only did I have someone else cook for me (and do the dishes!), I ate so well! We enjoyed yogurt with fruit, OJ, coffee, tea, homemade scones, and a delicious quiche.

Hubs and I were full until mid-afternoon, and the hearty breakfast fortified us as we planned what to do in Astoria.

Level 10 travel tip: Let your Bed and Breakfast hosts know if you have to leave early and will miss breakfast; they’ll pack you a to-go back with fruit, a muffin and granola bars.

Astoria, Oregon Restaurants 

My favorite restaurant in Astoria was also the most romantic. We celebrated our anniversary over dinner at Baked Alaska, where we watched pilot boats moving giant barges down the Columbia River at sunset right outside the restaurant. (Pilot boats help huge ships maneuver safely through this stretch of the river.)

I usually order vegetarian dishes, but I figured I might as well eat seafood since we were near the Oregon Coast—and I’m so glad I did! Their signature dish, the seafood stew, was beyond delicious. It wasn’t a heavy, creamy clam chowder (though they offered that on the menu, too); it was a seafood broth with a generous amount of scallops, salmon, clams and prawns. I ate every last bite.

They also serve wood-fired pizza, steaks and a wine list that’s nothing to sneeze at. I couldn’t have asked for a better restaurant in Astoria to celebrate our anniversary.

Level 10 travel tip: Make reservations for the tables at the very back of Baked Alaska, which is parallel to the Columbia River, for the best (and most romantic) views.

There are a few top-notch ice cream spots in Astoria, too. So save room for dessert at Frite & Scoop, where you can sample your way to your favorite flavor—or opt for the frites, if salty and savory is more your bag.

Visit the breweries in Astoria

Astoria has plenty of breweries, too. Check out the live music schedule at Fort George Brewery and Pub (just blocks from the Rose River Inn Bed and Breakfast). And order a pint at Buoy Beer Co., which is right on a pier. You can snag a table that overlooks the Columbia River, but even if you don’t get a primo seat, you can check out the heavyweight sea lions resting below the building through the glass floor.

All my business travel has armed me with a few techniques for traveling without kids. For parents leaving their littles at home, then, I have a few pieces of advice. Whether you’re a business travel newbie or you’re used to going on a business trip without kids, these tips will help you feel more comfortable being away from the family. They’ll also help the transition at home.

10 tips for a smooth business trip without kids

1. Facetime every day.

When I’m out of town for business, I make a point of Facetiming with the kids every day so they can at least see me. (Skype and Google hangouts work just as well.) Our “conversations” often end up with my 2-year-old carrying the phone room to room (and inducing some seasickness), but it’s the closeness that matter. And with your partner’s help, you may even get a glimpse of what they’re up to—like climbing a tree!

Both my kids hug and kiss the phone goodbye, and I swear I can feel the love over the miles.

2. Ask for updates all the time.

Your child’s caretaker—whether it’s your partner, a grandparent or daycare—may not want to bother or overwhelm you when you’re traveling for business. So specifically ask them to send updates as often as you want them (which is, for me, as often as they can). I worry a lot less when I get a quick text saying Kiwi slept through the night, or that Peeper ate a good lunch. And I feel closer to my kids when I get snapshots of what they’re doing throughout the day.

3. Write a postcard.

Whenever I take a business trip without kids, I make a point of buying a postcard from my destination—even if it’s not that scenic—and sending it home. The messages I scrawl on the postcard aren’t that interesting (recaps of a business trip usually don’t have the same excitement of a vacation, after all) but the girls love getting mail, and it makes me feel more connected to them.

If there’s truly nothing to report, I’ll draw a doodle about something random—like the barista who clearly had drunk at least 18 cups of coffee, or a pigeon that was walking in circles in the park. My kids like these illustrated postcards the best!

4. Send photos back and forth.

I text my partner photos of myself throughout my business trip so he can show the girls what Mama is doing. Here’s me at the airport! Here’s me in front of a mural I thought you’d love! Here’s me after 9 hours of uninterrupted sleep!!!!

5. Stay busy.

The devil, and loneliness, love idle hands. Work will keep you occupied when you’re on a business trip without kids, but if you have downtime and you’re starting to miss your littles, dive into another project—whether that’s a side hustle or getting ahead of the ball for your job.

On the other hand…

6. Relax.

If you have kids, I’m guessing you haven’t painted your toenails or watched a movie start-to-finish in a very long time. Do it! When I travel for work, I buy a new nail polish color and paint my nails, or I take a bath, or I crawl into bed at 8pm without an ounce of guilt. So kick back in your hotel room, relish the fact you don’t have to do the dishes after eating your takeout, and take a very deep breath. Ahhhhhhh.

7. Know there will be lonely times.

If you’re traveling without kids, you’ll miss them—even if you’re also doing a happy dance that you don’t have to fight over toothbrushing or diaper changes. For me, slow moments at work and the moments right before bed are the saddest and when I miss my kids the most.

I figure I can’t avoid being sad, and it’s a totally normal emotion, so I just let it be. Sometimes I’ll text my partner or another mom friend who will get it. These are also the times I scroll through my Instagram history, which always makes me laugh at the ridiculous moments I’ve captured—like Peeper’s first taste of fried chicken. (And that bib—iPood! Hahaha!)

8. Tell your kids you’re leaving.

As tempting as it is to slip out without saying goodbye, ghosting your kids will only make them more confused—and more anxious about when you’ll disappear next. So prep your kids a day or two ahead of time. “Mom is going on a trip for a few days, but I’ll think about you all the time when I’m gone, and we can still talk every day!”

9. Tell your kids when you’ll be back.

Make a point of clearly explaining when you’ll come home from your business trip. I tell Kiwi, who is not yet 3, that I’ll be back in two sleeps—or however long I’ll be. With Peeper, who will turn 5 this year, we look at the calendar together, and she circles the day she’ll get to see me. (She doesn’t circle the day I get back, necessarily, because I’ll often fly in after she has gone to bed.) Then they have a reference point when they ask your partner or their caretaker, “When does Mom get home?”

10. Embrace your kid-free time.

If you’re anything like me, most of your waking hours are dictated by the whims of your kids. (Good luck listening to anything besides kidbop in the car. If you’re going out to eat, you better make sure grilled cheese is on the menu.) So since you’re doing a little kid-free travel, own it! Go to sushi. Catch up on podcasts. Pop in an antique store. In short, do all the things on your business trip you wouldn’t be able to do if you were traveling with kids.

(For me, my ritual is getting takeout, drinking an impossibly tiny and cute bottle of Prosecco, and watching Vikings or some other totally kid-inappropriate TV.)

And even if your business trip without kids is hard and you miss your munchkins like woah, remember that you’ll be home—and in their peanut butter-smeared arms—soon.
