The Columbia River Gorge, on the border between Washington and Oregon, offers dramatic scenery. For good reason: The gorge was formed at the end of the last Ice Age about 14,000 years ago when glaciers chiseled through the landscape. Bingen, WA and White Salmon, WA are two small towns along the Gorge that serve as ideal jumping-off points to explore this stunning area.

<img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="1024" height="657" src="https://toandfrofam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/Society-Hotel-Bingen-library.jpg" alt="The Society Hotel in Bingen, WA is the most beautiful (and affordable) hotel to stay in the Columbia River Gorge area. Thankfully there are plenty of other things to do in Bingen and White Salmon Washington, including wine tasting, a world-famous art museum, restaurants and more. They’ve both added hotels, shops and restaurants that cater to visitors, especially for nearby Portland, Oregon.

Both towns are also terrific launchpads to see the Gorgeo’s natural beauty. Hiking and white river rafting are only minutes away.

So if you’re looking to visit Bingen, WA ad White Salmon, WA, this post has all the details you need: the best restaurants, hotels, hikes and other things to do in Bingen and White Salmon, Washington.

<img decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://toandfrofam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/White-Salmon-WA-mural.jpg" alt="White Salmon, WA restaurants, hotels, shopping, wine tasting and things to do: A comprehensive travel guide to this Columbia River Gorge town. But you can find excellent—and scenic—wineries within a short drive.

My favorite is Syncline Winery, just a 10 minute drive east from Bingen, WA. In my opinion, it’s the prettiest place to taste wine in the fall in the area. The turning trees, campfires and, of course, stellar wine make Syncline my top recommendation of where to go wine tasting in Washington in the Columbia River Gorge.

(Don’t miss tasting their Subduction Red. Most restaurants in White Salmon serve it, and for good reason: It’s a crowd pleaser.)

Antique shopping in Bingen, WA

I love a good antique store, and they always seem to be the best in small towns. Antiques & Oddities, the shop in Bingen, WA, is no exception. It’s large and well organized, with entire sections dedicated to dishware, vintage cowboy boots and Asian artifacts.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="767" height="1024" src="https://toandfrofam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/Antique-store-Bingen-WA-767x1024.jpg" alt="Vintage cowboy boots and antique shopping in the tiny town of Bingen, WA—and other things to do in Bingen and White Salmon, WA. I’ll definitely return to this antique store the next time I’m in the Gorge.

Maryhill Museum of Art in the Gorge

A half-hour drive east from Bingen, Maryhill Museum of Art perches on the ridge of the Gorge. This beautiful art museum not only offers an unparalleled view of the Columbia River, it also exhibits impressive art and Native American artifacts.

Inside the museum, a mansion more than 100 years old, you’ll see European and North American fine art, decorative arts and miniatures of high fashion. My favorite section highlights Native American baskets, collected from tribes around the Pacific Northwest.

Cross your fingers for good weather when you visit the Maryhill Museum because you’ll definitely want to see its outdoor sculpture garden. Keep an eye out for the resident peacocks wandering among the Rodins.

Know that the Maryhill Museum of Art closes between November 16 – March 14.

Hikes near White Salmon, WA

The Columbia River Gorge has only this problem with hikes: With so many options, it can be hard to choose one!

The Oregon side of the Gorge has most of the waterfalls, so if that’s what you’re going for, simply cross the Columbia. Bridal Veil Falls, Multnomah Falls and Latourell Falls are all terrific, nearby waterfall hikes.

On the Washington side, you’ll get expansive views of the Columbia River. The area around White Salmon and Bingen is also more characterized by sage and wildflowers rather than the evergreen forests more common on the Oregon side.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="768" height="1024" src="https://toandfrofam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/Fall-wildflowers-Columbia-River-Gorge-768x1024.jpg" alt="Beautiful White Salmon, WA: Things to do, restaurants, hikes, shopping and hotels: Everything you need to know to visit this little Columbia River Gorge town. It’s a fairly gradual uphill climb, nothing too strenuous. (For context, I’ve hiked this trail with pregnant friends and women wearing babies in carriers.)

My favorite part of the Catherine Creek hike (besides its awesome name, obvi) is seeing Mt. Hood from a fresh perspective. I consider Mt. Hood my home mountain, and we see it every day from our house. I rarely see its back, though, and cherish my favorite mountain from every angle.

Catherine Creek also blooms with wildflowers every spring. I’ve never hiked it at this time of year. If you do, know it’ll be busy: hikers from Portland and beyond come to see the short-lived monkey-flower, redstem storksbill, honeysuckle and other wildflowers.

Beacon Rock hike, Washington

If you’re looking for a hike on your way back to Portland from White Salmon, WA, Beacon Rock is a great bet. This short but rewarding hike is about halfway between White Salmon and Portland on the Washington side of the Columbia.

Beacon Rock is a hunk of cooled magma that Lewis & Clark named on their expedition in the early 1800s. Crisscrossed by switchbacks, the mile-long trail takes you to its summit, where you can see the Columbia stretch to the east and west.

I wouldn’t bring your children to hike Beacon Rock, though. The drop offs along the trail are simply too steep and dangerous. The potential of an accident is too great to risk bringing my kids, ages 4 and 6.

To hike Beacon Rock, you’ll need a Discover Pass ($10 for one day).

Restaurants in White Salmon and Bingen, Washington

One of the good things about exploring small towns is you’re not overwhelmed by options. And luckily, those options of restaurants in White Salmon and Bingen are delicious.

For lunch, head to North Shore in White Salmon, WA. This local cafe serves healthy, filling bowls, sandwiches, salads and omelets as well as coffee, tea and pastries. North Shore also has a large table for groups as well as games and books for children.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="1024" src="https://toandfrofam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/North-Shore-Cafe-White-Salmon-1024x1024.jpg" alt="Where to eat in White Salmon, WA: North Shore Cafe, a healthy restaurant in White Salmon. This Northwest-inspired restaurant and deli welcomes diners stopping in to share a few small plates, and the service is excellent.

Feast also has a deli counter, which serves salads and other packable food. That, plus its small shop selling cheese, wine and other goodies, make it this area’s go-to spot for stocking up on picnic supplies.

For a casual dinner in White Salmon, hit up Everybody’s Brewing. This brew pub serves its own beer as well as a full menu. Everybody’s Brewing is terrific for straightforward pub fare and they were more than happy to accommodate our group’s modifications for dietary restrictions. Plus, the brewery’s huge booths can fit large groups.

For a more upscale dinner in White Salmon, Henni’s Kitchen & Bar is the most recommended restaurant. Seven friends and I ate dinner here on a recent trip to White Salmon, WA, and the food was excellent. Vegetarians will find only a few menu options, though.

While we devoured pretty much every single morsel of food at Henni’s, I was surprised by several hiccups at the nicest restaurant in White Salmon. At 6:30 on a Saturday night, they had entirely run out of bread and steak, which featured heavily on the menu and in the specials. Although the night didn’t seem particularly busy, we waited an hour and a half for our food. And my meal—a salad—arrived 20 minutes after everyone else’s. I was pretty disappointed, but maybe Henni’s was just having an off night.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://toandfrofam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/Ayutlense-Mexican-Bingen-WA.jpg" alt="Where to eat in Bingen, WA and White Salmon, WA: Ayutlense is a family-owned Mexican restaurant in Bingen and serves enormous portions of delicious Mexican food! This family-owned Mexican restaurant in Bingen serves delicious dishes in sizes that could probably feed half the town. Unless you’re sharing (or starving), order off the chico combinations menu. This beautiful hotel renovated an old schoolhouse and retained much of its century-old charm. For example, the hotel kept the school’s gym intact, adding Pendleton pillows for the bleachers and games like foosball and cornhole for guests.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://toandfrofam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/Society-Hotel-Bingen-sanctuary.jpg" alt="The beautiful grounds of the Society Hotel in Bingen, WA. With an outdoor hot tub, a warm tub, a cold pool for polar bear dunking and a dry sauna, you have plenty of choices for luxuriating. I loved that I could also order wine, sparkling water and snacks in the beautiful bath house.

This hotel in Bingen is also unconventional in its room options. You can rent one of the cabins that surround the bath house. Or in the main building, you can stay in rooms named for classes (Science, French, etc.) or in high-end, hostel-like bunks. These three-high bunks are nicer than any hostel where I’ve stayed, but at rates starting at $37 a night, including access to the bath house. It’s hard to beat that price and I’m already planning my return stay at the Society Hotel, probably next month!

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="768" height="1024" src="https://toandfrofam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/Bunks-Society-Hotel-Bingen-WA-768x1024.jpg" alt="Where to stay near White Salmon, WA: The Society Hotel in Bingen is mere minutes away from White Salmon.

When I was pregnant, everyone was so fond of telling me that everything was about to change. First of all, duh. Second of all, those people should have been telling me that just because life changes with kids doesn’t mean you have to give up what you love. That truth goes for travel—hence the existence of this entire blog—and it doesn’t have to go for wine tasting, either. If you’ve ever thought that you can’t do the things you used to love now that you have kids—i.e. exploring wineries—this post is for you. It’ll show you that you can go wine tasting with kids—and will go into detail just how to make it work!

Plus, wine tasting and kids totally go together: After all, the perfect wine tasting foods—crackers, cheese and grapes—are pretty much the only thing my kids eat anyway. Coincidence? I think not.

Wine tasting with kids is totally doable. As long as you plan ahead, take the necessary precautions and know your wine tasting with tots in tow will be slightly different than your bachelorette days, then your entire fam is poised for a great time!

And yes, below I’ll go over each of these steps so your whole family will love wine tasting with kids.

So pack up the minivan, thank your designated driver one million times and go! Wine country is waiting.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" class="wp-image-2430" src="https://toandfrofam.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Wine-tasting-with-kids-683x1024.png" alt="Everything you need to know to go wine tasting with kids: family travel everyone will love! Limit the number of wineries you hit

Before you plan a loop to visit five different wineries in a day, remember you’ll have to transition your kids for each of those—interrupt their play, get them in a car seat and so forth.

Instead, pick just one or two kid-friendly wineries and settle in. You can still taste a good number of wines that way, and wine tasting with kids will be much more relaxed.

2. Look for kid activities

When you pick which wineries you’ll visit, by all means choose ones where you’ll enjoy the wine. But also consider your kids, and find wineries with kid-friendly activities.

Stoller Family Estates in Dayton, Oregon, for example, has a disc golf baskets that kids love (and discs you can borrow from the winery). And Villa Catalana Cellars outside Oregon City has a bocce ball court and a giant dragon sculpture next to a cave where my kids’ imaginations run wild. (Read my full post on going to Villa Catalana with kids to see everything this winery has to offer families.)

3. Pack food for everyone

Most wineries offer some food—but often, the menu is limited to crackers and cheese. If your kids are anything like mine, you’ll want to bring a variety of snacks so they don’t get hangry and force you to abandon wine tasting with kids forever!

But don’t neglect to bring food for yourself, too. Pack a picnic for everyone—just about all wineries welcome outside food as long as you eat it outside the tasting room.

4. Explore the winery grounds

Once you’re done with your picnic, go wander! Kids’ energy levels aren’t meant to be cooped up inside a tasting room, so let them burn off energy. At certain points in the season, some wineries let kids walk in the vineyards. (My friend happened to time one wine tasting visit perfectly right after harvest, and the staff there let the kids pick the remaining grapes right off the vines!)

Your kids might also find non-wine-related spots within the winery. Torii Mor in Dundee, Oregon has a beautiful Japanese garden as well as a hazelnut orchard, for example. My girls love to chase squirrels in the orchard.

5. Get outside

Even if the winery grounds aren’t expansive—or the time of year makes playing in the vineyards off-limits—take your tastings outside. Your kids will be much happier (as will other wine tasters) if you stay outside.

Bring a picnic blanket, a few games your kids love and even bubbles to make the outdoors where you want to be. The adults will just need to take turns going inside to get the next pour on the tasting flight.

6. Limit your tastings

Heavy daytime drinking with your kids is generally not a great idea. Pace yourself and drink within reason; save the moms-gone-wild moments for a kid-free weekend.

7. Designate a driver

This should go without saying, but if you’re wine tasting with kids—or without—you need a designated driver. Those wine tasting pours look tiny but catch up to you!

8. Invite other families

When you go wine tasting with families, all the kids will entertain each other. That means you’ll get to spend more time savoring each pour of a flight rather than chasing after kids who are trying to climb stacks of barrels.

9. Order a glass of wine instead of a flight

I love wine tasting, but sometimes when I go to wineries with kids I opt for a glass instead of a tasting flight. Why? Having a full glass allows me to wander the winery grounds and hang out with my kids rather than constantly going back to the tasting room for the next pour.

10. Teach kids about wine

Considering I’m writing an entire post on how to go wine tasting with kids, it shouldn’t surprise you that I’m really open with my kids about wine and alcohol in general. Obvi, this doesn’t mean I give my kids any alcohol to drink; it just means that I’m super straightforward. I don’t call wine “mommy juice” or hide it from my children. They know it’s a drink for grown-ups, not kids.

Since wine isn’t taboo, I’m open to teaching my kids about wine. After all, the wine making process is super interesting! Showing them the fruit on the vine, the barrels and the finished product fascinates my girls. And you can always go for the gross-out factor, since pretty much all kids like gross stuff: Talk about how winemaking depends on naturally occurring yeasts that grow on the skin of grapes, or ask winemakers about how they manage fruit flies during crush.

(My husband worked crush one year and can tell a few stories!)

11. Consider kids’ naps

If your children still nap, consider the timing of going wine tasting with kids. You might want to go when the winery opens so you can drive home during their nap time. If they’re good at napping in a carrier or stroller, bring that along. But if you want to enjoy your time wine tasting, don’t expect them to skip their nap and not make you pay for it.

Wine tasting and breastfeeding

If you’re breastfeeding and going wine tasting, you have a few extra things to consider and plan for. You have a few options:

Bring along pumped breast milk or formula for your baby to drink while you’re drinking alcohol, then pump and dump. This is the safe route if you plan on drinking moderately or if your alcohol tolerance is low.

Limit your alcohol intake. Alcohol is present in breastmilk at the same percentage as it is in your blood. The La Leche League advises that if you’re sober enough to drive, you’re sober enough to breastfeed.
