Start by ascending to new heights at Pikes Peak, otherwise known as America’s Mountain. Feel free to take the Pikes Peak Cog Railway to the top or do an intense, 12.5 mile hike (one way) to the summit of one of the best 14ers near Denver. 

Next, do an easy hike along the Palmer Trail at the one and only Garden of the Gods. It’s one of the best hikes in Colorado and is an easy, 4-mile loop hike to all of the area’s most awe-inspiring red rock formations. 

Afterward, attend a world-class show at Theatreworks before enjoying the Colorado Springs vibrant nightlife along Tejon Street, between Pikes Peak Avenue and Kiowa Street. Local faves include martinis at Blondie’s, line dancing at Cowboys, and admiring the views, around a roaring fire, from the roof of Gasoline Alley.

If you want, you can also pamper yourself with a selection of premium spa treatments, like massages and facials, at Garden of the Gods Club and Resort before heading out to Seven Falls. 

Seven Falls is an awe-inspiring local waterfall that can be reached as you drive through the “Grandest Mile of Scenery” before reaching the base of the waterfall. You’ll then park here and climb 224 steps to get a closer look at this amazing waterfall before embarking on a nice hike through the area. Fort Lauderdale, Florida, once a haven for spring break partiers, is now a great place for couples, families, and of course, a girls trip. With miles of beaches and warm weather, this US girls trip destination makes a great place to get away with your friends.

Make sure to book Ft. Lauderdale lodging right on the beachfront. Then you will have a picturesque view of the sun rising above the ocean and won’t have to lug your beach gear very far. By staying on the beach you will have numerous bars and restaurants to explore all within walking distance. 

When you get bored relaxing on sandy beaches (is that even possible!) and catching up with your friends, take the free water taxi to bar hop. Or for a luxury boat ride, you can charter a yacht to take you cruising along the Intracoastal waterway. This is a great way to hang out with your girls while viewing amazing scenery and gorgeous mansions.

If you and your girlfriends enjoy the beach, great food, and gorgeous historic homes—you’ll likely discover that Newport, Rhode Island, is the perfect place for a girl’s trip! 

Newport, Rhode Island, is just an 80-mile drive from the Boston Logan International Airport. Once you arrive, you can get started exploring all the best things to do in Newport, RI. You can take a stroll along the scenic Cliff Walk, get some sun at Easton Beach, go shopping at the local boutiques on Thames Street or Bellevue Avenue, or tour one of the Newport Mansions. Toronto is among the best destinations for a girl’s trip because it is home to friendly people, easy-going vibes, lots of unique attractions, a ton of green space to explore, and a diverse culinary scene.

One of the best things to do in Toronto is to visit the CN Tower. Standing at 553 meters, it dominates the city’s skyline. You can take the elevator up to the main lookout level and enjoy the panoramic city views. It also has a revolving restaurant that offers both incredible food and incredible views.

If you and your friends love shopping, then head right to the Eaton Center. It spans two city blocks, boasts over 250 retail stores, and holds the title of the busiest mall in North America.

Then, be sure to grab a bite at St. Lawrence Market. There are more than 120 local vendors here in this historic market. They sell everything from fresh produce and seafood to baked goods, spices, and specialty items, so there’s something for everyone.

Orlando, Florida

Orlando is just for family vacations, right? Wrong! Seventy-six million people visit Orlando every year, including couples, groups, and besties. Who doesn’t love sunshine, fun resorts with swimming pools and parks packed with rides? That’s why I’m recommending Orlando as an amazing girls trip destination.

The most popular attractions in Orlando include Walt Disney World, Universal Studios and things to do on International Drive*, which runs between the two theme park resorts. 

Walt Disney World is split into four parks and two waterparks, so you can literally spend your whole vacation watching the Disney Parade, losing your stomach to the Tower of Terror, traveling around the world at EPCOT and going on a safari. 

If your time is limited to a long weekend, dedicate a day to Disney, another to Universal (fierce rides and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter) and dine at Disney Springs or I-Drive. If visiting during the low season, such as January, you can get around the parks a few times a day using dedicated line skips which are worth investing in all year round.

Other activities include tanning by the resort pool, dining on I-Drive, which caters for every style of meal from fine dining (Jack’s Place) to casual cocktails (The Hampton Social), shopping at Disney Springs (Fabletics and MAC), parachuting without a plane at iFly and crazy golf. 

Note: The stretch between Walt Disney and Universal Studios is 8 miles, so don’t underestimate the need for transport. Once you’ve decided which activities the girls want to do, choose a hotel resort closest to most attractions and/or make sure the hotel offers bus services to parks or that the Uber cost is affordable. Also, most hotels add a resort fee to the overall price.

One of the best places for a girls’ trip in Hawaii is the island of Maui because there are so many memory-making opportunities. You can head up to Haleakala Crater in the middle of the night to see an epic sunrise that some people say is a religious experience.

Los Angeles is easily one of the best places to go for the ultimate girl’s trip! From great brunch spots, hiking, Disney, and beach days, there are tons to do in the City of Angels!

To start it off, a girl’s trip won’t be complete without taking a hike to the iconic Hollywood Sign on your Los Angeles itinerary. The hike starts by Giffith Observatory, another top place to see in LA. From here, you can enjoy an epic sunset with a view of downtown LA. Moab, Utah

Are you looking for an excellent girls trip destination? You absolutely must check out Moab, Utah! Most would rather go on a girls vacation to places like New York City or Las Vegas, but Moab is completely underrated. It’s an outdoor lover’s paradise, perfect for those who want to explore the wilderness and go on hikes during their vacation.

There’s so much to do in Moab. The most popular thing to do is visit Arches National Park, one of the most popular national parks in the country. It’s only a short drive from downtown, but try to get there bright and early to avoid the heat. In the park, you can hike to Delicate Arch, Double Arch, the Windows, and even through Park Avenue. There are also easy hikes in Arches too. Don’t forget to do the scenic drive!

Another great place to visit around Moab is Canyonlands National Park, which most people tend to overlook because of Arches. However, Canyonlands is truly a hidden gem in the National Park Service. In Canyonlands, the best place to visit is the Island in the Sky district. There, you can hike to False Kiva or Mesa Arch; two gorgeous spots! On your drive to Canyonlands, you can also pull off at Dead Horse Point State Park.

Virginia Beach, VA

Virginia Beach is a great girls trip destination on the East Coast—and here’s why! There is so much to do within walking distance of the beach, but also lots of space to relax with friends. Virginia Beach has 28 miles of beautiful sandy beaches to explore, lots of great restaurants, and plenty of unique activities. 

I recently went on a girls’ trip of all working moms to Virginia Beach and it could not have been better! We stayed in a vacation rental one block from the Boardwalk and Beach. We walked to some great local restaurants and could also order in with lots of delivery options in the area. I especially recommend Commune for brunch with lots of gluten-free options. There are also many great boardwalk hotels to choose from at all different price points from high-end to family-friendly. 

Virginia Beach is the largest city in the state and has so much to do beyond the beach. You can rent a surrey bike (the largest fits 8—ideal for a girls trip group) and bike along the 3-mile-long boardwalk, enjoy a boat ride on the Atlantic, check out one of 10 local spas or go hiking in nearby state parks. Banff, Canada

Whether you are looking for a trip full of outdoor adventures or looking for time to relax, Banff is the ideal place for a girls trip. There’s plenty to do in Banff National Park to fill a weekend or even a week.

To get the most out of a visit to Banff, hit the must-visit places like Lake Louise, Moraine Lake and a hike to Johnston Canyon. While visiting Lake Louise and Moraine Lake, leave some time to take in one of the stunning hikes in the area. From Lake Louise, hike to the Lake Agnes teahouse or the Plain of Six Glaciers teahouse. From Moraine Lake, a hike to Sentinel Pass offers incredible views.

For the girls who want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and have a more peaceful retreat amongst nature, it doesn’t get much better than Joshua Tree, California. 

Start off by choosing a zen boho AirBnB or our pick, a luxurious glamping yurt that has a nice hot tub to soak under the tranquil dark sky of Joshua Tree.

During the day, head out on an epic adventure inside Joshua Tree National Park. Our top sites to see are the “teddy bear” cacti at the Cholla Cactus Garden, especially for sunrise or sunset when the cacti needles appear to be glowing. Next, go for a hike in the Wonderland of Rocks to witness endless rows of Joshua Trees surrounded by the huge oddly shaped boulders that you don’t get to see anywhere else.

Originally a small fishing village, Playa del Carmen is now a vibrant beach town and one of the most visited tourist destinations in Mexico. With tropical white sand beaches, a lively downtown area, and tons of tours and activities, Playa del Carmen is a fun girls trip destination for a relaxing vacation or adventurous retreat.  

The town is centered around Fifth Avenue (“La Quinta Avenida” in Spanish), which is a vibrant pedestrian-only street that spans for more than 20 blocks, and where you’ll find the majority of restaurants, bars, nightlife, and shopping. Fifth Avenue is a great location to be at the center of the town’s nightlife and the many open-air nightclubs offer a fun night out for dancing with girlfriends.

Costa Rica is one of the most beautiful countries in the world and, in my opinion, the safest country in Central America. These are just a few reasons that make it a great location for a girl’s trip in 2022.

Despite its small size, with its vast landscapes, diverse wildlife, stunning beaches, friendly people, and good food, Cost Rica has something for every taste. There are many areas to consider when vacationing in Costa Rica but Manuel Antonio makes a great destination for a girl’s trip especially if you have a long weekend to explore. 

The national park in Manuel Antonio is loaded with beautiful beaches, active wildlife, and stunning sunsets. (Watch out for the naughty monkeys: They love to steal food!)

Manuel Antonio is only a few hours away from San Jose Airport and 4 miles north of the small but lively town of Quepos, where you can plan a fun night out. Stay in a cozy beach bungalow overlooking the beach at Hotel Costa Verde or opt for a luxury experience at Arenas del Mar. There are plenty of pristine beaches to relax at and top-rated full-service spas.

The Greek island of Milos is the perfect destination for a girls trip. If you and your friends enjoy off the beaten track destinations and love exploring beautiful nature, this Greek island is for you! Milos is a lesser-known Cycladic island with a lot of charm and plenty of fun things to do!

One of the best places to stay in Milos is the island’s biggest town Adamas. The town has excellent accommodation options, good restaurants and nightlife. Visit the epic Serakiniko Beach with its peculiar landscape resembling the moon. Serakiniko is a beautiful place to take some epic photos and a lovely beach to catch some sun and swim in the turquoise water that reflects the surrounding white rock.

Andalucia, Spain

The region of Andalucia in southern Spain is a great place for a girls trip. For a start, the weather is glorious pretty much all year round, it’s incredibly safe and there is so much to see, from stunning historical cities such as Cordoba, Seville and Granada as well as beautiful beaches. If you prefer to get away from the crowds, Andalucia is also home to some pretty impressive national parks. 

The best way to get a flavor of the region is by planning a road trip in Andalucia. Driving in Spain is easy, the roads are well maintained, and rental cars are available from all major cities. 

If you’re most interested in beaches, then a great route is from Malaga to Cadiz. Enjoy the beaches in and around Malaga, before heading south, stop off in Marbella (the historical centre is adorable). Keep following the coast down – if you have time, do a day trip into Gibraltar – before hitting Tarifa, which is known for wind sports, and then to Bolonia beach to see the giant sand dunes. Continue along the coast, ending up in the ancient city of Cadiz.

If you prefer UNESCO landmarks, then a great option is to start in Seville and enjoy the Alcazar, Bario Santa Cruz and the Cathedral. From here head towards Cordoba to visit the visually stunning Mezquita, the mosque-cathedral. From here continue on to Granada, where you will find the Alhambra. Ideally, you’ll want to spend a couple of days at each location. 

If you have the time, then you can do both of these mini-itineraries as a loop over a couple of weeks.

Less than a half-hour’s drive south of Tulum, just off Highway 307, you can see the impressive and steep-walled pyramids of the Muyil Ruins. The archaeological site in Quintana Roo, Mexico is also located along the Sian Ka’an biosphere reserve, where you can hike and take a Muyil River float tour.

Even if you skip the biosphere reserve, though, visiting the Muyil Mayan Ruins near Tulum is so worth a short trip. Below, I share a little about this archaeological site’s history, how to get to the Muyil Ruins, what you’ll see, and details you need to know before visiting these pyramids near Tulum. I’ll also include some tips on exploring the Sian Ka’an biosphere reserve.

The Muyil Ruins near Tulum, Mexico

The Muyil Ruins are a collection of temples and platforms on which people built homes and roads, along with more evidence of a once-thriving community. Archaeologists have found artifacts and construction dating back as far as 350 AD, making the Muyil Mayan Ruins one of the oldest and longest-inhabited centers on the Yucatan Peninsula. For context, the nearby Tulum Ruins were first inhabited about 200 years later.

Muyil Ruins History

Archaeologists also believe that Muyil was a center of commerce, particularly trading jade, feathers, and other goods. Products would arrive by boat via the canals in what’s now called the Sian Ka’an biosphere preserve (a beautiful name meaning “Where the Sky is Born”). Traders would then bring the goods inland, distributing them throughout the area.

Today, visitors can explore part of the Muyil Ruins in Quintana Roo. The other part of the Muyil archaeological site is still off-limits to visitors, since it hasn’t yet been fully excavated and preserved.

Exploring Muyil Ruins: The Highlights

You’ll need about an hour to walk the entirety of Muyil Ruins, though you should plan for twice that if you want to walk in the Sian Ka’an biosphere preserve as well.

The site is flat, making it easy for young children and those with mobility limitations to explore. And both the dirt paths and gravel paths are well maintained, though you should always watch out for tree roots and other uneven spots.

Kid-friendly adventure

My kids and I met up with one of my dear blogging friends, Cassie from Mexico Cassie, and her two kiddos. The site was perfect for a kid-friendly adventure near Tulum: The kids were able to play and pretty much run free, and Cassie and I actually got to chat! (For all you moms of young kids, you know how rare an uninterrupted conversation is.)

As wonderful as talking with a friend is, though, I was absolutely blown away by the Muyil Ruins near Tulum. Perhaps I just haven’t been jaded by the overwhelming number and diversity of ruins in the Yucatan Peninsula, but I simply marveled at the Muyil Ruins.

The buildings of the Muyil Ruins

I could also hardly believe how close we could get to the ruins. Since the Muyil Ruins are off the beaten path and attract few visitors, this archaeological site is fairly underdeveloped making it one of the best non-touristy things to do in Tulum. You can walk right up to a centuries-old pyramid and touch it if you want (although all signs ask visitors to not climb on the constructions).

The most impressive sites in the Muyil Ruins were the 55-foot-tall pyramid and the Pink Temple (building 8). When you are there in person, look toward the top of the building—can you see stone carvings of animals or other figures?

Although these constructions are the most photogenic, keep an eye out for small piles of rocks and raised platforms. Most of these don’t include signage, so I don’t know what they all used to be. Archaeologists probably don’t know, either, since time has since reclaimed many structures, especially minor ones.

The platforms may have been raised areas on which residents built homes out of wood, branches, leaves and other materials. No matter what they are, though, it’s simply magical to see them up close.

Hiking in the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve near Muyil Ruins

If you have time, I absolutely recommend taking another hour to explore the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve while you’re at the Muyil Ruins.

You don’t have to drive; you can enter the biosphere by walking from the back of the Muyil archaeological site. Simply continue past the Pink Temple along the path—the trees will begin to grow more densely, and the path gets bumpier and muddier.

You’ll come to a wooden boardwalk and arrive at an entry station, where you’ll need to pay an additional 50 pesos (25 for kids) to enter the Sian Ka’an biosphere.

Exploring the forest and lookout point

From there, you can walk along the boardwalk all the way to the Muyil Lagoon. The boardwalk takes you through lush forest, and similarly to the ruins, very few people visit this area so you’ll likely have most of the hike to yourself.

Halfway between the archaeological site and the Muyil Lagoon, you’ll come to the mirador, or lookout. This wooden structure is about three stories tall. If you’re not afraid of heights—and don’t mind climbing the ladder/super-steep stairs—you can get an incredible view of the jungle within the Sian Ka’an biosphere reserve.

I didn’t climb to the top, since I stayed below with Maxine, my 3 1/2 year old who so wanted to go up with the big kids. Edie, who was 5 1/2, actually scrambled to the top ahead of any grown-ups, much to my chagrin.

A word to the wise for parents: If you have daredevil kids, you might want to skip the mirador in Sian Ka’an. The observation platform is basically a wide-open wooden platform that would be incredibly easy to fall off of. If you do let your kids go up, make sure to have a safety chat beforehand so they understand expectations (sit in the middle of the platform, wait until people are all the way up before climbing down the ladder, etc.).

Muyil Ruins lagoon

We had planned on hiking all the way to the Muyil Lagoon and going on a Muyil River float tour, but the sky opened up when we finished at the lookout. We got caught in a super-heavy downpour. What’s more, Edie—who had been loving the adventure of exploring the Muyil Ruins and the rain forest—ran off without us, and we lost her for about 10 minutes. It was terrifying. Luckily, two friendly strangers spotted her crying on the boardwalk by herself and brought her back to the lookout, where we found her.

At any rate, we didn’t make it all the way to the Muyil Lagoon—we’ll have to save that for the next time we visit the Tulum area. If you’re interested in a canal tour of the Muyil Lagoon, scroll to the bottom of this post to read more on boating the lagoon, from Mexico Cassie.

Logistics: Details you need to visit & Muyil Ruins entrance fee

Muyil Ruins, like every other ruins we found near Tulum, are open all week long from 8am to 5pm. (If you visit around a holiday, though, you should double-check to ensure it’s open before you go.) A dirt parking lot offers more than enough parking for the low traffic the ruins get on an average day.

The Muyil Ruins entrance fee to the archaeological site is 50 pesos per person (less than $3 USD), and the entry desk rarely has change. Make sure to bring as close to exact change as you can.

Amenities at the Muyil Mayan Ruins

There are restrooms located just inside the Muyil Ruins entrance, but nowhere else on the property. Make sure you use the bathroom before you begin to explore!

Across Highway 307 from the parking lot, you’ll find a little bodega that sells snacks, drinks and a few souvenirs. I strongly considered running over there to get t-shirts for my girls, since their clothes were 100% soaked from the torrential rain storm we were caught in!

Muyil Ruins: Off the beaten path adventure near Tulum, Mexico

If you’re looking for what to do in Tulum, and you want to avoid crowds and explore something that’s a little more off the beaten path, then I strongly recommend visiting the Muyil Ruins near Tulum.

Whether you go to Tulum with kids, a bunch of friends or on a solo travel trip, this archaeological site in Quintana Roo is more than worth a visit. You’ll get to see centuries-old ruins up close, hike through the jungle and learn about cultures that came before.

If you’re considering a family vacation in Tulum, you’ll want to read this post. In it, I take an honest look at visiting Tulum with kids—the good and the bad. Keep reading to learn what you need to know about vacationing in Tulum with kids.

What you need to know for a family vacation in Tulum

Traffic in Tulum is atrocious

When we first drove our rental car into Tulum, it took us more than a half-hour to get from one side of the beach strip to the other. Bumper to bumper traffic on this tiny road made our day trip feel claustrophobic, not relaxing.

Expect traffic, especially as they redo the infrastructure in parts of this growing beach town.

(If you’re flying into Cancun, you’ll probably be driving the roughly 2 hours to Tulum. Read my post all about renting a car in Cancun if you’re going this route.)

Beachside restaurants are expensive—but worth it

You can only access the beach in Tulum if you’re staying at a hotel there, you rent a beach cabana or bed, or you eat at a beachside restaurant. We went to Ziggy’s Beach Club to do just that.

This kid-friendly restaurant in Tulum was such an oasis after battling traffic through town. Staff were incredibly attentive and the food was superb. My favorite part: The entire restaurant was on the sand, so the kids made sand castles and played in hammocks as we waited for our food. What’s more, the seats at the bar are actually swings—so my kids voted Ziggy’s the most family friendly restaurant in Tulum.

Afterwards, we played in the ocean. After all, when you eat at a beachside restaurant in Tulum, you’re paying for the beach too. Ziggy’s also has changing rooms and showers so you don’t have to drive back to your hotel or rental all sandy.

The food and drinks at beachside restaurants in Tulum are American prices ($220 pesos for a margarita, for example, which is about $12 USD) but everything we tasted at Ziggy’s was well worth the price.

Walking on the street is dangerous

We walked around in Tulum’s beach zone to check out the town—and my kids almost got hit by cars twice.

There are no sidewalks on almost all of the road. That means you and your family will have to walk right next to traffic. With all the growth in Tulum, there’s construction everywhere—so you’ll have to actually step into the street to get around ongoing construction projects.

In addition, you and your kids will be inhaling all the exhaust and dust from the cars driving right alongside you. Walking in Tulum with kids was beyond stressful.

Tulum town is much more family-friendly

Only a small part of Tulum is on the beach; the rest of the city is more inland—and is much more charming.

I actually loved exploring Tulum town. We stumbled across a store full of handmade goods from Mexican artisans, La Llorona, where my girls picked out souvenirs and gifts for their grandparents and cousins. A quaint Mexican restaurant, Charlie’s, had live marimba music. And we found street art in the side roads that were refreshingly absent of tourists.

If you do go to Tulum with kids, you’ll want to spend at least part of the day off the beach and in Tulum town.

Visiting Tulum Ruins with kids

You’d totally miss out if you didn’t go to the ruins while staying in Tulum with kids. The ruins are right in town, are fairly inexpensive, and you can explore the whole site in about an hour. Extra bonus in case you’re on the fence: Within the Tulum Ruins is a gorgeous beach you can access as a park visitor, so bring a towel and swimming suit! The beach at the Tulum Ruins was the most beautiful beach where we swam in Tulum.

I wish I had pushed my family to get out the door earlier in the day. There is almost no shade at the Tulum Ruins, and the middle of the day was hot in the full sun. My poor kiddos were wilting before my eyes! So if you go to the Tulum Ruins with kids, go first-thing.

Level 10 travel tip: There are soft-serve ice cream joints in the area in front of the Tulum Ruins: A wonderful way to treat your kids in the heat!

Buy kid-friendly souvenirs from local artisans

If your kids are anything like mine, they’ll ask to buy every knick knack, straw hat and lucha libre mask they see at Tulum’s many souvenir shops. But I don’t want to bring a bunch of crap home, and I’d rather support local artisans who are being paid fairly for their work.

That’s why we shopped for souvenirs at La Llorona and Mixik, both sources of gorgeous and authentic Mexican crafts and artwork.

La Llorona is on the road that runs alongside the beach. My younger daughter picked out a hand-sewn rhino and my older daughter chose a traditional Mexican doll. The shop owner was helpful and generous, too: She threw in a complimentary tote bag along with the other gifts we bought for family back home.

And I could barely restrain myself from buying everything in Mixik in Tulum town. The traditional clothing in kids’ sizes was perfect for my nieces, and I felt terrific shopping here because I knew artisans were paid fairly for their handiwork.

Level 10 travel tip: Stop at Charlie’s next to Mixik for lunch. They sometimes have live music! When we visited, Maxine was enthralled with the marimba players.

Feed your family in Tulum at Chedraui

My siblings and I had a running joke when we were in Tulum: We couldn’t stop laughing at our own attempts to pronounce Chedraui, the name of the mega-grocery store in Tulum. All jokes aside, though, this Tulum grocery store is a must-stop for every family vacation in Tulum.

It’s incredibly well stocked with both Mexican staples and foods my kids were familiar with. We bought peanut butter, crackers, granola bars, cereal and tons of other staples that kept my kids fed—while the adults feasted on tacos, guacamole and other insanely delicious Mexican food.

(My kids are not adventurous eaters, but they still have to eat!)

Going grocery shopping in Tulum gave me peace of mind that my kids would always have something familiar to eat. That way, I didn’t have to stress about them getting hangry because they refuse to try black beans.

Level 10 travel tip: To save money in Tulum with kids, eat two meals a day at home. We prep and cook breakfast and dinner at our beach rental, then eat lunch at a restaurant.

Swim in cenotes with kids

When we arrived at our first cenote, my kids couldn’t believe their eyes: The clear water in this sunken limestone cave was unlike anything they’d ever seen before. We couldn’t get in fast enough!

My girls loved swimming in the Dos Ojos cenotes so much that Max, my younger daughter, refused to get out even when her teeth were chattering. (The water is fairly chilly, especially because these cenotes were shaded in caves and not in full sun.)

When you go on a family vacation in Tulum, do not miss swimming in a cenote.

Level 10 travel tip: You’ll want to bring a life jacket for kids, even if they already know how to swim: Many cenotes are deep, and without a swimming pool edge to hang onto, kids get tired. Many cenotes will lend you a kids’ life jacket with the price of admission, but I felt more comfortable bringing my kids’ puddle jumpers, which we swear by (affiliate link).

Planning a trip in Tulum with kids

I must admit I was surprised that Tulum wasn’t more family-friendly. If we went back, I wouldn’t stay on the beach in Tulum unless we were planning on staying at the hotel beach and never leaving. (This option makes it difficult to explore the area around Tulum, including the Tulum ruins and cenotes, though.)

I would, however, do the same thing we did on this vacation: Stay in a rental home outside of Tulum. (This is the amazing house outside of Tulum where we stayed—I’m already scheming for our return trip! And use my referral code to get 15% off your first stay!)

I recently flew into Cancun and then stayed in Tulum, Mexico, on a family vacation. We didn’t stay at a resort and so needed to be mobile and flexible for swimming in cenotes, exploring Mayan ruins and simply getting groceries. So I did decide to rent a car in Cancun.

Here are all the thing I wish I’d known about renting a car in Cancun—lessons I’m sharing with you so you’re not surprised. Plus, read to the end to find tips for driving in Mexico and Spanish vocabulary you should know when you’re driving in Cancun.

Rent a car in Cancun: Worth it?

When you’re deciding whether or not to rent a car in Cancun, Mexico, there are some things you need to know. I’m so glad you’re here, where having all the research in one place saves you time (and headaches). After all, when you’re getting ready for a family vacation in Mexico, you want less stress—and more fun!

Here’s what you need to know about rental cars in Cancun.

Cars are cheap. Insurance is not. 

When I went to rent a car in Cancun online, I nearly fell out of my chair laughing. A midsize sedan cost $2 per day!

I figured insurance for a rental car in Mexico wouldn’t be cheap, but I still had sticker shock when it came time to pay up. For the most basic car rental insurance, we paid $32 a day. That brought our bill of roughly $18 up to more than $300, plus taxes and fees.

Your insurance likely covers you only 50 miles into Mexico. 

If you drive in the United States or in your home country, you probably have car insurance already. (At least you should… please tell me you do.) You also might think that insurance covers you in Mexico.

It doesn’t.

You can always call your insurance company to double-check, but most U.S. insurance covers you only the first 50 miles into Mexico from the border. Since Cancun is more than 50 miles from the U.S. border, we would get zero protection from your U.S. car insurance.

Compare insurance you buy beforehand.

I made the mistake of not adding insurance to our car rental in Cancun when I booked online. So I bought the insurance protection plan from Alamo when I picked up the car rental in Cancun.

Looking back, I see that the basic insurance plan via Expedia with a car rental in Cancun is $11/day—a third of what it cost at the counter in Mexico.

So do your due diligence, and plan ahead. You may save a bunch of money by getting car insurance online before you get to Mexico.

Get a shuttle from the Cancun Airport.

After you’ve gone through customs and inspections, you’ll exit the secure part of the airport—and walk right into a bunch of people trying to get you to rent their cars, reserve their tours and take their taxis.

If you’ve already made a car rental reservation online, simply find the car rental company and go straight to their desk. You’ll see all the car rental companies familiar from the U.S.

I’m not sure about all the rental car companies, but Alamo’s lot was within the airport. It was about a 5-minute shuttle from the international terminal.

Pick a car rental company that’s in the Cancun Airport terminal.

When you book your car rental in Cancun online, don’t just get the cheapest rate or go with the company you recognize; look for where the counter and pick up is located.

If you just took a long flight to Cancun and you’re ready to start your vacation, the last thing you want to do is take a long shuttle somewhere off-site just to get your rental car.

Instead, choose a rental car in Cancun that says counter and car in terminal.

Here’s the difference:

Ask the rental company to comp you a tank of gas.

Ask if you should return the car with a full tank. Most of the time, this is the case, but a tank of gas was included in the insurance coverage we bought—so I’m glad I knew to return it empty!

If they do tell you to return it full, try to negotiate. You can say something like, “The car you’ve provided us has a lot of dings and scratches,” or “We had to wait 45 minutes to even start the check-out process for our rental.” Then ask how they can make it right. “To make it up to me, will you include a tank of gas?”

They might say no—but they might say yes. And returning the car on empty will save you the money of the gas, the time it takes to stop at a gas station, and the hassle of finding a gas station nearby.

Thoroughly inspect the rental car.

You probably already know that you inspect the rental car before taking it out of the lot. But when renting a car in Mexico, go over the top to make sure you note any damage.

When we got our rental car in Cancun, I made notes of every scratch and ding I saw. I also had them note the damaged lining in the rear doors.

Even better: Take photos of all the damage in case there is any dispute. And test the horn: When my sister rented a car in Cancun, they asked her to beep before leaving the lot to make sure the horn worked.

Find the gas cap release.

I swear car manufacturers spend sleepless nights inventing sneaky new places to hide the gas cap release. I can never find it in a rental car; sometimes I even have to take out the manual to look it up.

So before you leave the rental car company lot, make sure you know where it is. If you can’t find it, ask. That way when you stop at a gas station, you’re not fumbling and searching for the switch to open up the gas tank.

Traffic isn’t crazy.

Before I rented a car in Cancun, I was nervous about driving in traffic in Mexico. I’ve spent a lot of time in developing countries, and people tend to obey traffic laws a lot more loosely than I’m used to.

So imagine my surprise when cars in Cancun yielded the right of way, let other drivers merge and stayed close to the speed limit!

I felt entirely safe driving in Cancun and driving to Tulum. Traffic wasn’t much different than in the U.S.

Vocab words you need to know when driving in Mexico

I laugh because we spent a week in Mexico, and my girls learned one Spanish word: tope!

We stayed at a rental house down a dirt road, and topes—or bumps—were everywhere. We’d shout, “Tope!” every time we bumped up and over a makeshift speed bump.

Here are a few vocab words you should know when driving in Mexico:

• Tope – bump. These are speed bumps, and sometimes they’re the opposite of gradual. Drive slowly over them so you don’t bottom out.
• Retorno – return. This is a lane and break in the median to do a U-turn. On the roads out of Cancun, you’ll see them all the time and will likely have to double back to get to your destination, since they’re the only way to turn left.
• Alto – stop. You’ll recognize the stop signs in Mexico from the red octagon.
• Estacionar – park. Instead of a big P, you’ll see a bold E to signal parking areas.

Gas is full service.

As I mentioned, we got to return the rental car in Cancun with an empty gas tank. Driving around for 9 days didn’t completely empty my tank, so I never had to go to a gas station.

When I asked, though, I was told that most gas stations are full service: They will pump your gas for you. Ask to double check when you rent your car in Mexico.

Know roughly what to pay for gas.

When you do get gas, I wish you the best of luck trying to convert Mexican pesos per liter into U.S. dollars per gallon. The conversions kind of make my head explode.

But! That’s why we have the internet!

I found this handy site to convert pesos per liter to dollars per gallon.

Google Maps works well.

We had a great experience using Google Maps in Mexico: It always directed me to the right place with fairly accurate arrival estimates. It does take data, of course, but I did a $5 per day international plan with my cell phone carrier.

That said, you never quite know when you’ll lose service—so it’s a good idea to print out directions from the Cancun Airport to your destination.

Bring your own car seats.

Yes, it’s a giant pain to lug your car seats through the airport. And yes, it’s totally worth it.

I would not trust the quality or comfort of the car seats at a rental car company. You don’t know how they’ve been treated. I’d hope if a car seat were ever in an accident that the company would recycle it, but you simply don’t know.

Cop cars have lights on all the time.

Imagine this: You’re driving along in Mexico, minding your own business, and you see a police car behind you with its lights on. Don’t panic! It’s not pulling you over. From what I observed in Quintana Roo, the state where Cancun and Tulum are located, cops drive with their lights on at all times.

When in doubt, see what the cars around you are doing and follow their lead.

Watch for blinking green lights.

This one took me a while to figure out. I kept wondering why the green traffic light would start blinking. As it turns out, blinking green means the light is about to change to yellow. So it’s an extra warning, like “get ready to slow down to stop.”

A bit excessive? Perhaps. But now you know. Also, the traffic in Cancun did obey this blinking green light: The cars would often slow to a stop at a blinking green light instead of speeding through the intersection.

Leave plenty of time to return your rental car.

When we picked up our rental car, the staff working the office told us we could drop off the rental when we were done and be at the terminal in 15 minutes.

Are you surprised that wasn’t the case?

The process to return our car took at least 45 minutes, and I get the feeling we finished fast compared to the other very annoyed vacationers.

So return your rental car in Cancun with plenty of wiggle room to allow for a slower-than-expected return, long security lines—or kid meltdowns in the airport.

Now you’re prepared to rent a car in Cancun

When you go to Cancun (or Tulum, or the other wonderful destinations near the Cancun airport), you’re ready for vacation. You don’t want to stress about rental cars.

Now that you’ve read what to expect renting a car in Cancun, you have one less thing to worry about. You know what the traffic is like in Cancun, driving vocab words in Spanish, quirks of driving in Mexico—even a tactic that may get you a free tank of gas!
