Before we get to all the things to do, why Pacific City? First of all, it’s little. With just over 1,000 permanent residents, it’s not a bustling, sprawling city. That means you can easily explore the little Oregon Coast town and feel at home right away.

Next up, Pacific City is home to some of the most stunning scenery on the Coast. Haystack Rock sits a mile off-shore and acts as both a landmark and beacon—so you can always answer the question of where you are. (Answer: Right where you should be!)

I wish I could bottle up how special Pacific City, Oregon is. (I’d be a bajillionaire.) Since I can’t, though, I did the next best thing… and got it tattooed on my arm. Seriously.

Things to do in Pacific City, Oregon

Since Pacific City is small, you won’t find a ton of big-city activities. That’s kind of the point, right? You will find plenty of things to do in Pacific City, Oregon that revolve around the outdoors.

This beautiful Oregon Coast town is full of outdoor activities, from hiking and surfing to splashing and beach combing.

Read on for my 7 favorite things to do in Pacific City, OR.

1. Explore the sand dunes of Pacific City

Rolling dunes run alongside the ocean in Pacific City, creating a sandy wonderland! I dare you to run down the sand dunes and not giggle like a little kid.

Sure, the dunes require extra effort to walk up and down—and you’ll need to cross them to reach Pacific Beach in some parts. Worth it? Absolutely.

I recommend checking out the dunes at Bob Straub State Park. (Also, how fun is it to say that name?!) While it may be tempting to walk barefoot from the parking lot, wear your shoes. That way your feet aren’t poked by the burrs from dune grass. Ouch!

The sand dunes also make an amazing spot to post up with a lawn chair and your favorite beverage. You can people watch as well as whale watch from these great vantage points!

2. Watch the dory boats

A fleet of about 300 dory boats is based in Pacific City and launches from the beach next to Pelican Brewery. This one-of-a-kind fishing fleet is amazing to watch in action. Without a harbor or pier, the fishermen and women literally run their small boats into the water.

The traditional fleet catches salmon, tuna, rockfish and crab—some of which you can eat in local Pacific City restaurants!

3. Check out Cape Kiwanda

Cape Kiwanda juts into the Pacific Ocean, creating a calm spot for launching dories. It also provides plenty of fun things to do in Pacific City!

The sandstone headland overlooks Haystack Rock and the ocean beyond—great for whale watching. Make sure to admire the view from within the fenced-off area. The land is made of sandstone, which can easily crumble beneath your feet. People have died from venturing past the fence—just don’t do it.

Once you park in the day use area ($10/vehicle), get ready for a steep climb up the dunes. The walk is beautiful and well worth the effort! You may want to run full-tilt down the dune on the south end of the park. You’ll be shocked at how fast your body moves!

4. Hike at the Nestucca Bay National Wildlife Refuge

Just a few miles south of Pacific City, you can explore the beautiful Nestucca Bay National Wildlife Refuge. This preserve is full of wildlife—bring your binoculars to go bird watching, see elk and even spot whales.

Hike some of Nestucca Bay’s many trails. Some wind through the woods; others take you to a viewpoint overlooking the ocean. During the spring and early summer, you might be rewarded with gorgeous hillsides full of wildflowers!

5. Admire Haystack Rock, Pacific City

This is confusing, but there are actually two famous Haystack Rocks on the Oregon Coast. One lies off the coast of Cannon Beach; the other is here in Pacific City. It seems like folks could have come up with different names for these enormous sea stacks, but I don’t make the rules.

The Pacific City Haystack Rock is actually larger than the one in Cannon Beach. It only appears to be smaller because it’s farther away, about a mile offshore. Unlike its namesake farther south, the Haystack Rock in Pacific City can’t be explored up-close.

Still, it’s a gorgeous landmark—and one that makes Pacific City’s views unique!

6. Pacific City surfing

Pacific City, Oregon has become a popular surfing destination. Consistent breaks draw seasoned surfers along with beginners. You can rent boards and wetsuits in town.

Even if you don’t want to get in the water yourself, you can watch the surfers catch waves. If you’re visiting Pacific City in the fall, check out the Cape Kiwanda Longboard Classic. This surfing contest and celebration is also a fundraiser to build a local skate park.

7. Catch the sunset

One thing you can usually count on at the Oregon Coast: epic sunsets.

Pacific City, OR is no exception.

You can’t really pick a bad place to catch the sunset in Pacific City. That said, you won’t be disappointed while watching the sun go down from Cape Kiwanda, the dunes at Bob Straub or while sipping a microbrew from Pelican Brewery.

Pacific City Beach

It’s no surprise that the beach is one of the biggest draws to this Oregon Coast beach town. Pacific City Beach stretches from Cape Kiwanda down south through Bob Straub State Park. With access points throughout Pacific City, there’s literally no bad place to explore Pacific City Beach.

Recently my sister-in-law asked if the Oregon Coast was a swimsuit kind of a place. I laughed because she asked me this in January (brr!), but truthfully you can sometimes swim in the ocean here. Proof:

While Pacific City weather typically skews toward dip-your-toes-in-the-ocean, rather than full-on submersion, the beach here is beautiful.

My favorite spot to access Pacific City Beach: Bob Straub State Park. The parking lots are at the south end of town and are free, despite it being a state park. I like this beach because fewer people hang out here than the beach in front of Pelican Brewery.

The best Pacific City restaurants

Seafood is a big draw at the best Pacific City restaurants. Some of the fish and crab is incredibly fresh—as in caught that day—so it’s hard to go wrong!

You can find plenty else to eat besides seafood if that’s not your thing. Many Pacific City restaurants don’t require (or don’t accept) reservations, though the more upscale ones do during peak hours and the summer season.

Pelican Brewery

The most popular Pacific City restaurant is definitely Pelican Brewery. It’s not hard to figure out why: The food is great, and the location is perfect.

Situated directly on the beach, with impressive views of Haystack Rock and Cape Kiwanda, you get incredible landscapes alongside your meal. The outdoor seating makes you feel as if you’re eating directly on the beach.

Pelican Brewery also has a great kids’ menu and gluten-free options. (I’ve particularly enjoyed their GF pizza bread.) If your kids get antsy while they wait, they can step outside and play in the sand right next to the table!

Pelican Brewery gets really busy during peak times, especially on weekends. Prepare yourself for a wait or eat outside of the most popular hours.

If you’re using the public parking directly next to Pelican Brewery for beach access, you can stop at Pelican Brewery’s to-go window. Grab a growler or can of beer to go or to accompany your beachfront picnic. (Just brown bag it, as technically you’re not supposed to have open alcoholic beverages on the beach. To my knowledge this technicality isn’t really enforced.)

Oar House

The Oar House is a combination pub and restaurant, with more emphasis on the menu than a typical bar. Unsurprisingly, it has plenty of fresh seafood options, including crab. Its prime rib night on weekends draws plenty of locals, too.

Ben & Jeff’s Burgers

This walk-up restaurant is great for a quick to-go meal. Order your burgers and take your meal down to the beach for an easy picnic.

Not into burgers? This Pacific City restaurant also serves tacos and breakfast burritos.

Hotels: Pacific City, Oregon

Now that you can’t wait to visit, your next question may wonder about where to stay.

You’ll find short-term rentals in neighborhoods (some of which come with boogie boards and bicycles—yes please!). You may also want to stay at one of the great hotels in Pacific City.

Since the town is small, you don’t have to choose from among dozens of Pacific City hotels. (Isn’t it nice to have fewer choices sometimes?) With hotels and lodging at different price points, you’ll be able to find a great place to stay.

Do your best to book a Pacific City hotel well in advance if you’re visiting during the summer. Off-season trips can be more easily booked at the last minute.

Having grown up in Oregon and now living outside Portland, I’m used to all the amazing Oregon Coast towns. I haven’t explored Washington beach towns nearly enough. I’m so glad I’ve stumbled across Seaview, Long Beach and the Long Beach Peninsula!

It’s not hard to see why.

One thing I love about Seaview and Long Beach, Washington—my favorite towns on the Long Beach Peninsula—is that they’re charming without being overdeveloped. You generally won’t have to fight big crowds, avoid annoying chains or struggle to find a place to stay. Much of the time—especially during the shoulder season, when I visited—you’ll experience sleepy towns with a laid-back vibe.

Plus, the beaches here are gorgeous. 28 miles of continuous coastline make for plenty of places to adventure!

Wait—Is It Seaview or Long Beach, Washington?

Both! Well, kind of.

Seaview and Long Beach, Washington run into each other. They’re both small beach towns in Washington, and nothing separates them.

I know, of course, that they’re distinct towns. But for the purposes of traveling to Seaview or Long Beach, they’re pretty interchangeable.

Things to Do in Seaview, WA

1. Bike the Discovery Trail

The 8.5-mile-long Discovery Trail begins in Long Beach, WA and extends south through Seaview and Cape Disappointment State Park. The paved bike trail ends in Ilwaco on Baker Bay, which is part of the Columbia River.

The stretch of the Discovery Trail in Long Beach runs parallel to the pedestrian boardwalk along the beach. It winds through gentle dunes and beautiful scenery. Keep an eye out for deer—I spotted several families when I visited!

2. Stroll the Long Beach Boardwalk

Didn’t bring your bike and not up for renting one? Take a walk along the Long Beach Boardwalk instead.

This wood-slat boardwalk runs parallel to the beach and the Pacific Ocean. It’s a great option to see the gorgeous landscape without filling your shoes with sand.

The half-mile-long boardwalk is a favorite spot for locals as well as visitors. Pause in the evening to catch the sunset over the Pacific!

3. Visit Adrift Distillers

If you’re visiting Seaview without kids, or the littles are busy (and supervised) at the beach, stop by Adrift Distillers.

This craft distillery is just a block from the beach and makes truly delicious spirits. Housed in the same building as the Adrift Hotel, you can stop in and get the booze to recreate cocktails served at Pickled Fish. (See the below section on Seaview restaurants.)

I picked up a bottle of Adrift Distillers cranberry liqueur, made with local cranberries, to bring home.

4. See cranberry bogs

Speaking of cranberries—did you know that about a third of the cranberries in the U.S. are grown in Washington? You can learn this (and much, much more) at the Cranberry Museum in Long Beach, WA.

This small and homey museum is about a 5-minute drive from the main drag in Long Beach. You can walk among the cranberry bogs, which are test and research bogs operated by Washington State University.

It won’t take you long to see the extent of the Cranberry Museum (it’s quite small). Make sure to buy a bag of cranberries before you go (you might want to make cranberry-orange bread at home—my favorite!) and a scoop of cranberry ice cream. Yum!

If you visit Long Beach in October, definitely stop by the Cranberry Museum then. You might get to see the cranberry harvest. You’ll probably also spot pop-up roadside stands selling cranberries throughout the Long Beach Peninsula.

5. Browse Marsh’s Free Museum

Is it a museum? Is it a shop? Maybe a little of both, but it definitely is bizarre. Imagine a quirky great-aunt folks don’t really talk about opened up her weird attic to the public. Now you have a good sense of Marsh’s Free Museum.

Filled with curios, secondhand knickknacks, shells, touristy beach items and taxidermy, this odd Seaview thing to do should make your list. Just take a calming breath before you dive in. It’s a little overwhelming—and totally worth a visit.

6. Shop and sip at Bold Coffee Art & Framing

Beach towns in Washington need good cafes. After all, even during the summer the beaches can get chilly. You’ll definitely want to check out Bold Coffee Art & Framing when you need something warm to sip.

I love Bold Coffee not only for its cafe but also its gallery/gift shop. I enjoyed browsing the ceramics, art and prints by local artists. If you’re hunting for a unique souvenir or gift, skip the run-of-the-mill beach shops and head here instead.

7. See live music at the Sou’wester

Long Beach and Seaview, Washington aren’t exactly hopping in the nightlife department. So if you want to see live music, head to the Sou’wester Lodge.

This historic lodge and trailer glamping spot hosts live music most weekends. (Check their live music calendar first.) It’s a small, intimate venue, but it doesn’t serve drinks. That means kids are welcome, too!

8. Explore Cape Disappointment

Despite its name, Cape Disappointment State Park is anything but disappointing. Its gorgeous lighthouse, beautiful beach and hiking trails make this park one of the best things to do in Seaview.

Cape Disappointment is a 10-minute drive south of Seaview on the Long Beach Peninsula. I recommend spending a half-day here (though it also has great camping, including yurts, if you want to stay overnight!).

9. Marvel at the Long Beach Kite Festival

Whether you join in the high-flying fun or watch as a spectator, don’t miss the Long Beach Kite Festival. Technically called the Washington State International Kite Festival, this summer event draws everyone from kids to international kite-flying competitors to Long Beach.

The kite festival happens the third week of August. Know that Long Beach and Seaview are particularly busy and congested during the festival. This is not the time to go if you’re looking for a quiet beach vacation. That said, if you’re up for all the fun and excitement, book your lodging ASAP! Hotels and AirBnBs fill up quickly. (My favorite place to stay is the nearby Sou’wester Lodge, which includes a few lodge suites as well as more than 30 retrofitted vintage trailers. Check out my full review of the Sou’wester here.)

The winds coming off the Pacific Ocean make this area a prime kite-flying spot. So if you visit the Long Beach Peninsula the 51 weeks of the year that are not the Long Beach Kite Festival, you can still have fun! Didn’t bring your own kite? Buy one at the shops along Pacific Way (the main street through town). You can also bone up on your kite history at the World Kite Museum, a few steps away from the beach.

Long Beach & Seaview, Washington Restaurants

Word to the wise: Some Seaview restaurants close early, even on a weekend evening, in the off season. I visited Seaview, Washington in January—definitely not peak tourist time—and struggled to find dinner on a Saturday night. Many restaurants closed at 8 or were mysteriously shuttered, in spite of the hours listed on their website.

If you’re visiting Long Beach or Seaview, WA, plan ahead for dinner: You’ll need a reservation at the nicer restaurants (such as Pickled Fish). Regardless of where you go, aim to eat on the early side so you’re not left scrambling.

Pickled Fish

This upscale restaurant in the Adrift hotel specializes in local seafood as well as wood fired oven pizza. Even if you don’t have much of an appetite, you’ll want to check out Pickled Fish for its ocean views and killer cocktails. (There’s a rotating monthly benefit cocktail that supports a local nonprofit—delicious drinks for a cause!)

Historic Shelburne Hotel & Pub

On the main street leading through Seaview and Long Beach, Washington, you’ll spot an adorable historic hotel. The Shelburne was built in 1896 and retains many of its original features. My friend Snow and I ate a delicious lunch here. The stained glass windows in the Shelburne Pub are just stunning!

Lost Roo

This Australian-inspired sports pub is great for hearty pub fare. One night we needed a meal when most other spots were closed, and the Lost Roo came through! Expect the usual sports pub atmosphere, with TVs streaming games on every wall—as well as delicious food. I ordered a yummy fish taco dinner and was 100% happy. It also has a family-friendly kids’ menu.

Patty’s Fish Tacos

This local, small taco restaurant uses locally caught fish in ultra-fresh tacos. This Seaview restaurant isn’t anything fancy; you’ll get your tacos in a styrofoam to-go container. But you just can’t beat just-caught fish tacos!

Seaview Beach: Why’s it called “Long Beach”?

Have I mentioned the beach? Not nearly enough.

Seaview Beach is one part of the world’s longest continuous peninsula beach. You read that right—the longest in the world.

Stretching 28 miles, the beach of the Long Beach Peninsula is a lot of coastline. Some areas are peaceful and pristine; others (like Seaview Beach) allow cars and vehicles to drive on the sand.

No matter where you end up on this stretch of the Washington Coast, though, it’s beautiful.

Where to Stay on the Long Beach Peninsula

When I visited Seaview and Long Beach, Washington, I stayed at the Sou’wester. This lodge and vintage trailer property is the most unique lodging in the area: You can stay in a renovated bus or trailer!

This Seaview glamping spot is a few minutes’ walk from the beach. Plus, there’s plenty to do right on the Sou’wester property, from going shopping in the vintage shop (housed in a trailer, obvi) to steaming in the sauna to checking out art in their gallery.

We found out about the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden by accident—and I’m so, so glad we did. What happened was Edie made friends with another little girl at Mauna Loa Beach. I got to chatting with the kiddo’s mom, who shared some of her recommendations of the best things to do in Hilo. (We were heading that way to visit Volcanoes National Park.) She practically made me promise we’d stop at these incredible Hawaii botanical gardens along the way.

If you’re looking for things to do in Hilo, Hawaii, drive the 15 minutes to the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden. You’ll love the chance to stroll through a lush rainforest, peep tropical plants and take in the Big Island’s unforgettable scenery.

Beautiful Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden

Visiting Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden remains a top highlight from our recent vacation on the Big Island. We stopped here on our way from Waikoloa on the Kohala Coast to Volcanoes National Park. The adventure helped break up our drive, gave us a chance to stretch our legs and let us experience the Big Island’s rainforest.

We brought in a picnic lunch, too. We sat on benches at a wooden table that overlooked the teal waters of Onomea Bay. The break was a perfect stopping point to refuel—and it’s hard to imagine a more scenic picnic spot.

The Hawaii botanical gardens trail felt steep in parts and included a few areas of stairs. Unfortunately, the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden is not wheelchair-accessible. My kids, who are 7 and 9, got a little tired walking up the boardwalk to the garden’s exit but the hike is definitely not strenuous.

This Big Island hike doesn’t require a lot of effort—but pays off in big ways. The bioreserve packs in a ton of biodiversity in a small area—so much that you’ll want to linger along the trail. Definitely pause on your adventure; you’ll be more likely to spot critters like the technicolor-hued gold dust day gecko! (This lizard isn’t native to Hawaii, but Maxine and Edie were still overjoyed to watch them.)

Many of the plant species aren’t native, either. That makes sense with Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden’s mission. It opened in the 1980s after years of curation and restoration. It had been choked with invasive species and was so overgrown that no one would have been able to visit. The founders cleaned up debris and even abandoned cars and appliances, creating the gardens and walking paths of today. When it was created, the founders included tropical plants from all over the globe so visitors could see them all.

Must-see botanical gardens: Big Island, Hawaii

Just over a mile-long trail winds through the rainforest on the Hamakua Coast on the Big Island. These botanical gardens grow rare and even endangered tropical plants—all for you to see up-close.

The trail starts on a boardwalk angling down a green hillside. Keep an eye out from the moment you enter these Hawaii botanical gardens. You’ll begin to spot orchids, dangling heliconia, lilies, bromeliads and more. It’s like stepping into the biggest, best florist ever.

You can think of these botanical gardens near Hilo like a living library or museum. Where else can you see such incredible diversity of plants you’d only read about otherwise? Edie appointed herself the job of identifying the bioreserve’s flowers and other plants. By the end of our Big Island hike, she began to point out heliconia and anthuriums on her own—without the help of the garden’s plant ID guide (or our help with pronunciation).

One thing I liked about Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden was how it was organized. The map is numbered so instead of wandering, Maxine led us along the path in sequential order. That way we saw everything and didn’t accidentally skip an area of this gorgeous botanical garden.

Good thing, too: You’ll want to see everything.

It’s practically impossible to pick a favorite spot from all the gems in the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden. (I know because we tried!) The biggest highlights, though, were the waterfall (toward the start of the trail), the pond, the monkey pod trees and the crashing waves of Onomea Bay.

My kids’ minds were blown to see how bananas and pineapples grow. (They speculated that I might grow into a pineapple, given how much of it I ate on this trip!) That’s right: This Hawaii botanical garden includes varieties of both so my kids learned how these fruit start out before they reach our plates.

Best things to do in Hilo, Hawaii

When we recently stayed on the Big Island, we spent most of our time on the Kohala Coast—the island’s western, drier coast. I’m so grateful we spent a day on the eastern, rainier coast, too. The lush rainforest was such a change from the lava fields of the Kohala Coast—and a real wonder for Maxine and Edie.

If you’re looking for things to do in Hilo, Hawaii, don’t miss the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden. The bioreserve is just a 15-minute drive north of Hilo—absolutely worth the short trip. Tips to visit Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden

I’m no mind-reader, but I feel pretty confident you now want to visit Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden on the Big Island. (How could you not?!) Let me lend you our firsthand experience so you can make the most of your trip. Follow these tips for a visit that’s memorable in all the best ways.

• Bring a picnic lunch. You can eat at benches throughout the botanical garden or post up at the picnic area at Onomea Bay.
• Prepare for rain. It’s a rainforest after all! The Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden lies on the rainy side of the Big Island, so don’t be shocked if rain is in the forecast. The garden’s little shop, where you buy tickets, also sells rain ponchos.
• Use insect repellant. Mosquitoes love the humid climate near Hilo. We bought and applied bug repellant that we bought in the shop for a few dollars per wipe (per person).
• Make sure you’re up for the walk. Wheelchairs, scooters and crutches are not allowed in the garden; if you need mobility assistance, this may not be the destination for you. Strollers are allowed but kids must walk or be carried along the steep boardwalk.
• Pack plenty of water. You’ll get thirsty as you walk.

With a queen bed, a full kitchen, a couch, a toilet and a roomy bath, the retro bus had everything we needed for a weekend stay. The glamping bus is also dog-friendly so Snow’s pup, Twinkies, could join us!

I loved the personal touches throughout this funky bus. We played music on the record player (the lobby has a selection of vinyl guests can borrow!) and cooked dinner in the bus. Snow took a nice long bath while I painted. (I’ve been teaching myself to paint with acrylics!)

I found the Blue Bird Bus to be totally comfortable. We kept cozy with blankets and a heater, and we could pull down the blinds for privacy. The kitchen was stocked with everything we needed, including a fridge. It had more homey goodies than a hotel room and as many as an Airbnb.

Glamping Trailers in Washington

There are more than 30 unique accommodations to choose from at the Sou’wester. Pay close attention to the features of each glamping trailer: some are more rustic than others. For example, some include a toilet; others are more like camping in that you’ll need to use the group restroom on the property. The restroom includes flush toilets and hot showers. There is also an open-air group kitchen, where you can prepare meals. It even includes a microwave.

In my opinion, the best way to choose between all the glamping trailers is to narrow it down first by rustic or not rustic. Do you need a kitchen and restroom in the trailer to feel comfortable?

Next, consider how many people will be staying in your vintage trailer. Different trailers are outfitted with different bed setups. One of my best friends stayed in a Sou’wester glamping trailer with her husband, two daughters and two dogs. That’s a different setup than if you’re on a solo trip.

Once you have those criteria figured out, check out all the trailers! They’re so quirky and fun—if you’re like me, you’ll have a tough time choosing.

And if you want more traditional accommodations, you can always stay in the Sou’wester Lodge. The lodge is a converted home from the 1800s with four suites.

Sou’wester Lodge Property: All the cool activities

As you might expect with a unique place to stay, there are also unique things to do! One of the coolest parts about the Sou’wester Lodge is that the property is also full of quirky activities and tucked-away spots.

Note that some of these funky activities must be reserved in advance, and some require a booking fee.

Tea house: You can book a session in the tea house, a cozy cafe made out of a renovated trailer. The tea trailer is outfitted with dozens of loose leaf teas. Comfy cushioned seats surround a little trailer—perfect for a solo sip or a very small group of folks.

Sauna: Reserve the sauna in advance to sweat away your worries. This natural, wood-lined spa can be either dry or wet heat—your preference. The sauna is set up in a secluded little garden, complete with a cold plunge tub. Sauna sessions are private so you won’t be sharing it with strangers.

Vintage shop: My friend Snow and I both scored a few secondhand goodies at this vintage shop housed in—you guessed it!—a vintage trailer.

Live music: On weekends, check out live music at the Sou’wester Lodge. We were lucky to catch Portland artist Hayley Lynn during our stay. There was no admission or cover price; the show was included in our stay! (Music isn’t booked every weekend; check out the Sou’wester’s calendar for upcoming shows.)

Yoga + meditation trailer: You can reserve this gorgeously renovated vintage trailer for a private meditation or yoga session. Unfortunately it was booked out during our visit, but I’d love to plan farther ahead next time to snag an hour in here.

Art trailer gallery: Art shows rotate in and out in this unique art gallery. (Yes, it’s also in a trailer.)

Lobby: The lobby is where you’ll check in at the Sou’wester—and much more. You can also pick up groceries and wine or thumb through a collection of vinyl. Buy locally made gifts or spa supplies for a relaxing soak. Everything is paid for by the honor system: You can put purchases on your tab and settle up when you check out.

The Sou’wester: Unique accommodations in retro trailers

If hotels-as-usual aren’t cutting it, you might be ready for these unique accommodations. Glamping trailers aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, but I absolutely recommend them for folks looking for an unusual or unique place to stay on their next trip.

I’m excited to book another stay at the Sou’wester Lodge in Seaview, WA. My kids were bummed they didn’t get to join this trip and have been asking that we go back as a family. They’re also curious about all the fun things to do in Seaview and the Long Beach Peninsula in Washington. (Did I mention that the Sou’wester is just a few walkable blocks from the beach?)

Seaview is a 3-hour drive from Seattle and less than 2.5 hours from Portland. Now you know that area’s most unique place to stay.

This Utah state park is hands-down our favorite in the state. It’s so fun to explore with kids—and even dogs. I love that the Goblin Valley “hikes” are so open-ended: No signs to stay on trail because you get to wander freely!

My kids are still talking about our visit to Goblin Valley, Utah. (They still giggle about how our dog, Finn, was afraid of the weird hoodoos! That’s right: Goblin Valley is a dog-friendly destination.)

Goblin Valley Hikes + Hoodoos

Here are directions to the best Goblin Valley hikes:

1. Drive to the Goblin Valley observation point. Park.
2. Walk down the stairs into Valley 1. (The stairs are not steep but may pose a challenge to people with mobility limitations.)
3. Hike.

Really, it’s that simple.

Also, this trail-less hike is one of the reasons I love love love Goblin Valley State Park. You get to wander, explore and adventure all over the place.

As you walk through Goblin Valley, you’ll weave in and out of rock structures called hoodoos. So what is a hoodoo? It’s a column of rock eroded by the elements to leave behind a bumpy pinnacle or spire. Visitors to this area thought the lumpy rock formations looked like hunched creatures—which is how Goblin Valley got its name.

Goblin Valley was one of the best highlights of my family’s spring break road trip. My kids climbed all over hoodoos, played hide and seek in the maze of rock structures and climbed the rocky hills surrounding the hoodoo-filled valleys. Their adventuring hearts were full to the brim—as was mine.

We also loved scaling the cliffs that surround the valleys. My sure-footed mountain goats—I mean kids—scrambled up and down the hills, giving me only a few heart attacks. But boy the view from up there is epic!

If you check out a Goblin Valley State Park map, you’ll notice that it’s divided into three valleys. This is a little deceiving because one runs into the other. There are no formal barriers between valleys. They are marked this way to help visitors learn about the geologic features, since the areas are slightly different.

My best advice: Head down into the valleys and explore. It’s such a treat to wander without a trail—take advantage!

Remember to follow the principles of Leave No Trace. Leave this piece of wilderness just as you found it.

Other Goblin Valley Hikes

We didn’t hike these designated Goblin Valley hikes when we visited. We were having too much fun exploring and climbing!

If you’re curious, here are details for other trails in the state park.

Carmel Canyon Trail, 1.5 miles round-trip. This loop includes a viewpoint overlooking Molly’s Castle, a huge outcrop that looks like—you guessed it—a castle or fortress. This Goblin Valley hike also includes short sections of slot canyons.

Entrada Canyon Trail, 3 miles out and back. This hike links the Goblin Valley campground to the Observation Point. The moderate hike includes up-close views of unusual hoodoos.

Curtis Bench Trail, 3 miles out and back. This trail takes you to higher elevations, giving you impressive views of both the Goblin Valley as well as outcroppings and mountains on all sides.

Goblin Valley State Park Viewpoints

There’s a good reason the main destination within Goblin Valley State Park is named simply Observation Point: It’s the easiest spot to get a sweeping view of the hoodoo valleys.

To get there, simply follow the state park road until it ends in a parking lot. Stretch your legs as you walk around the observation area. You can check out the valley below from several areas, including an overlook next to the restroom.

The main viewpoint is next to a sheltered picnic area. You can see people exploring the valleys below and get great panoramic photos.

You can hike to other viewpoints, too. You can check out another perspective from the Molly’s Castle Overlook about halfway through the Carmel Canyon Trail loop. There’s also an observation point at the end of the Curtis Bench Trail. Note, though, that the Curtis Bench trailhead is next to the Goblin Valley campground—not at the Observation Point parking lot.

Observation Point accommodations:

• Picnic shelter: This shaded area, full of picnic tables, is a great spot to eat in the shade.
• Restrooms: Make sure to use the bathroom here. There are no restrooms or other facilities in the valleys.
• Drinking fountain: Fill up your water bottles before starting your Goblin Valley hikes. You burn through more water than usual when hiking in the desert. Your dog can also get a drink of water here.
• Trash cans: Make sure to pack out all garbage from the valleys. Dispose of trash properly to keep this beautiful landscape pristine.
• Note: There is no cafe, restaurant or store. You can buy limited snacks and bottled beverages at the visitor center at the park’s entrance; otherwise, bring all food and drinks with you.

Goblin Valley Camping, Utah

Want a stunning home base to explore the San Rafael Swell and this hoodoo-filled park? You can post up in the Goblin Valley campground.

Hot summers and cold winters make spring and fall the best time for camping here.

You’ll want to plan in advance, as the campground commonly fills up. (It’s a small campground, making spots at an even greater premium.) You can reserve a campsite or a yurt at Reserve America up to six months in advance.

Goblin Valley Campground

The Goblin Valley Campground includes 24 campsites, a dump site, restrooms and a group site. Hot showers and flush toilets are available.

Sites include 10 tent sites and 14 RV sites. One thing I love about the Goblin Valley campground: Sites include a small shelter. These permanent structures provide shade and cover a picnic table—extremely welcome for hot, sunny days!

Campsites are nestled among rock formations and sandstone hills. They’re near trailheads, an OHV staging area and the disc golf course.

Goblin Valley campsites cost $35/night.

Goblin Valley Yurts

The Goblin Valley campground also includes two yurts. As you can imagine, these all-weather structures are in high demand, so reserve your Goblin Valley yurt well in advance.

The yurts are standard for what you’ve seen in other state parks. The round structures include:

• a bunkbed
• a futon
• table and chairs
• electricity

Yurts do not include linens, blankets or cooking supplies.

One thing I think is cool about Goblin Valley yurts: They include a little porch. I’ve never seen this in other state park yurts. The deck is a perfect spot to sit at night and stargaze.

Goblin Valley yurts cost $100/night.

Goblin Valley Disc Golf

My husband is a huge fan of disc golf, so when he found out there’s an epic Goblin Valley disc golf course—well, you can imagine how stoked he was.

We actually dropped him off at hole 1 to play while the kids, dogs and I explored the hoodoo valleys.

Hubs shared that this disc golf course is challenging and not ideal for beginners. You’ll tackle quite a lot of elevation change, with some pins situated atop stone spires. He got a lot of exercise hiking across the course and barely crossed paths with anyone. For such a unique course, the Goblin Valley disc golf is practically unused.

When we met up after his round, he was dusty, sweaty—and smiling like a maniac. He couldn’t get over what an amazing disc golf course was set up in this one-of-a-kind landscape.

The Excalibur reminds me of a Playmobil setup during the day, but its charm doesn’t stop there. Make sure you step outside Excalibur at night. Your kids will love seeing it lit up. It looks truly magical!

• Arcade with games
• Live show: the Tournament of Kings is an interactive event where you cheer for your knight to win the tournament.

New York-New York

Question: Why would you go all the way to Las Vegas to visit… New York? Answer: Because it’s one of the most fun, family-friendly hotels in Vegas!

Its theme is over the top, literally. A roller coaster actually takes you above and around this smaller-sized NYC skyline.

Before you think the New York-New York hotel in Vegas is simply too odd, let go and embrace its quirks. I mean, you’re in Vegas. You don’t bat an eye about being “transported” to Italy, France or Egypt, do you? Your kids will get a kick out of gazing up at the Empire State Building and Lady Liberty.

Free family-friendly casino attractions

No matter which family-friendly hotel in Las Vegas you choose, you can enjoy these casino attractions.

My kids and I like to walk from casino to casino, checking out the kid-friendly things to do in each.

I recommend doing a few at a time, rather than attempting a casino adventure marathon. The Strip is deceptively long, and it takes a lot of walking between attractions. My kids’ legs get tired out!

(Remember, you can also take the Las Vegas monorail. My kids love it!)

Now, let’s get to all the fun and free kid-friendly casino attractions!

Bellagio Botanical Garden

Whether or not you stay at the Bellagio, you should definitely check out the casino’s Botanical Garden.

This fanciful attraction changes themes regularly. That means even if you visited the last time you were in Vegas, you’ll want to go again.

Artists and designers go completely overboard creating whimsical displays. They feature flowers and plants, of course—this is a garden after all. But that’s not all.

You may see animatronics, performers or animals when you visit. No matter the theme, you and your kids will love exploring the Bellagio Botanical Garden.

Flamingos at the Flamingo

Are there flamingos in Las Vegas? Yes! Though they’re not native, and you won’t find any in the wild, you can see flamingos at the Flamingo casino and hotel.

This free thing to do in Las Vegas with kids is open every day from 7am-8pm. You can also spot other birds (such as pelicans and hummingbirds) as well as fish and turtles.

My kids love animals, so of course we had to see the flamingos in Las Vegas. Naturally, the flamingos live at the Flamingo casino and hotel. (It’s the oldest casino on The Strip.)

The flamingos are out even when it’s cold. (Yes, it gets cold in Vegas.) Stop by and say hi!

Chariots Fountain at the Caesar

Maybe it’s all the mythology books Maxine reads, but my kids are totally into the Chariots Fountain at the Caesar hotel-casino.

This part of the Strip is designed like ancient Roman architecture. Expect a lot of columns, white stone, and of course fantastical creatures straight out of myth.

Maxine and Edie are both convinced that flying horses and mermaids are real. (“Why else would there be so many stories about them?” #KidLogic) They took the statues at the Chariots Fountain as further proof.

Bonus: The Fountain on the Strip is a great place to pause and have a snack. If your kids’ feet are tired from walking, take a seat next to the fountain. It’s also a great spot for people watching!

Chihuly Glass at the Bellagio

Artist Dale Chihuly creates fantastical, colorful sculptures of glass. You can see one of his more famous installations in the lobby of the Bellagio.

Roughly 2,000 glass blossoms hang from the ceiling in the Bellagio lobby. The piece, which weighs more than 40,000 pounds, is called Fiori di Como. (“Fiori” means flower in Italian.) You and your family might imagine what else the blooms look like. They remind me of jellyfish!

Whatever you think they look like, visiting this famous Chihuly glass sculpture in the Bellagio is one of the best kid-friendly casino activities in Las Vegas.

The Chandelier in the Cosmopolitan Casino

If you’re looking for glitz and glamour, you want the Chandelier in the Cosmopolitan. This Las Vegas attraction is at the center of the Cosmopolitan casino and hotel.

Layers of shimmering crystals hang in a multi-story installation. Soft purple light illuminates the Chandelier, casting sparkles everywhere.

The inside of the Chandelier is a series of bars—not exactly kid-friendly. But you and your family can check out this impressive thing to see from balconies that ring the Chandelier.

While this beautiful attraction isn’t necessarily worth its own stand-alone trip, it’s absolutely worth a detour if you’re in the Cosmopolitan! (Especially if you’re going ice skating. More on that below!)

Ice Skating in Las Vegas

Ice skating—in Las Vegas?! Yes!

While you probably think of the hot desert and Sin City, you can actually go ice skating here in the winter—in true over-the-top Las Vegas style.

(This family-friendly casino attraction isn’t free but I wanted to include it anyway because it’s awesome!)

For the winter season, the Cosmopolitan converts its rooftop pool to an ice skating rink. You don’t have to stay in the hotel to enjoy this kid-friendly thing to do in Las Vegas. Just buy your tickets ahead of time (it gets busy!) and lace up your skate rentals!

We went ice skating in Las Vegas on our most recent trip. We went at night to best see the lights of the Strip. It’s so cool to skate all aglow from the neon lights of the Strip!

You can also buy cocktails and snacks. Fire pits, which you can rent and use to toast marshmallows, ring the ice skating rink, too.

This outdoor park in Ogden, Utah is a dinosaur lover’s dream. The 8-acre Ogden Dinosaur Park is home to roughly 70 models, including a towering brachiosaurus, ferocious T-Rex and enormous triceratops.

Admission also gets you entry to the paleontology museum and small natural history museum on site.

Read on for all the details to visit the Ogden Dinosaur Park. My own dino-lovers wanted to stay forever, making a life alongside prehistoric playmates. (Preferably the herbivores.) I’m betting your kids won’t want to leave, either.

As soon as you step into the outdoor Ogden Dinosaur Park, you’re walking among dinosaurs. Get ready to get up-close and personal with sharp-toothed ceratosaurus, massive pentaceratops and gentle magyarosaurus.

Maxine and Edie dashed between dinosaurs, beyond excited to see lifesize versions of all the prehistoric creatures they’ve only read about. I could hardly keep up with them as they zipped from dino to dino. It was almost as if they’d stepped into an episode of Dino Dana!

The two of them investigated each dinosaur up-close to guess if it would eat them or not. Seeing those sharp teeth and knife-like claws made me grateful we don’t live in the Cretaceous, Jurassic or Triassic!

Back in Time at the Ogden Dinosaur Park

Within the Ogden Dinosaur Park, paths wind through dinosaur “habitats.” It was fun to see different species camouflaged among trees or grazing in the grass—just like they might have done between 245 and 66 million years ago.

Paved paths take you past dinosaurs, some as big as a bus, others the size of a house cat.

Maxine and Edie were also thrilled to find the playground. Kids zipped down a slide inside a tall “tree,” climbed atop an enormous triceratops skull and kicked the sky on the swings. Children can choose between several sections of the playground—one for small kids, one for older kids and one for all ages. Picnic tables and benches stand nearby for snack breaks.

Elsewhere in the Ogden Dinosaur Park, kids can dig for “fossils” in a quarry. A layer of sand conceals bones and even a nest of dino eggs! Maxine and Edie used brushes and small shovels to uncover fossils. Gradually, a skeleton emerged: a stegosaurus!

I loved hearing them talk as if they were real field scientists. The opportunity for imaginary play really brought the Ogden Dinosaur Park to life. My two mini paleontologists even recruited me to help with their monumental scientific discovery!

Maxine and Edie wanted to spend hours here. At the end of our trip , I had to explain that the dinosaur park was closing. And as much fun as we had, I didn’t look forward to camping beneath the belly of a Tyrannosaurus Rex!

Ogden Museums of Paleontology and Natural History

The Ogden Dinosaur Park is all outdoors. Inside this fun destination’s building, you’ll find a museum of paleontology and museum of natural history.

You walk past the gift shop and upstairs. (An elevator is available, too.) Animatronic dinosaurs sway and chew in a prehistoric scene. Note for kiddos who are sensitive to sound: This area plays dinosaur noises, so bring noise canceling headphones or walk quickly by if that will bother your kids.

The Ogden Museum of Natural History is an area on the second floor filled with minerals and stones. I could have spent longer admiring the geodes, amethysts and crystals, but Maxine and Edie were all about the other museum.

Step down a flight of stairs and you’ll find yourself among dinosaur bones! The Elizabeth Dee Shaw Stewart Museum of Paleontology shows what would have been on the inside of all those dinosaurs in the Ogden Dinosaur Park. Maxine and Edie explored among the full skeletons and replicas of non-dino prehistoric animals such as mammoths and smilodons (aka saber tooth cats).

This Utah paleontology museum also takes visitors “underneath” the ground by exploring how fossils are unearthed. You can even look through windows at a real paleontology lab. There were no scientists working when we visited, but it was cool to see all their tools.

Utah for Kids who Love Dinosaurs

We visited the Ogden Dinosaur Park on our spring break road trip. We stayed overnight in Best Western High Country Inn in Ogden before continuing our trip to Green River and Moab, Utah.

The Ogden Dinosaur Park was a perfect activity for me and the kids. (Hubs stayed back at the hotel so he could watch our two dogs and finish a paper for his master’s program.) They got to stretch their legs and burn off energy built up from two days of driving.

It also helped that we had something epic to look forward to!

I absolutely recommend stopping at the George Eccles Dinosaur Park in Ogden. We can’t wait to go back. Make sure to pin this post for later so you don’t forget to go!

This Utah state park overlooks dramatic canyons and the Colorado River. The rock formations are stunning. The kid-friendly hiking trails are perfect for mountain goats—I mean children—who like a little scramble with their walk. And the mountain biking trails draw experts as well as families from all over.

Views from the visitor center and Dead Horse Point overlook alone are worth the short drive from Moab and Arches.

So if you’re looking for something to do in Moab that’s not a national park, check out Dead Horse Point State Park. The views are breathtaking. Then, once you catch your breath again, you can tell all your friends about this impressive park. They’ll be sure to thank you.

Why do they call it Dead Horse Point?

Maxine and Edie were less than thrilled with the name of this Utah state park. The name is a bit grisly—especially when you hear the history behind it.

So why is Dead Horse Point named that?

Years ago, cowherds used to use the geography of the land to corral wild horses. They’d herd them to what’s now called Dead Horse Point, which is a small piece of land surrounded by sheer dropoffs. A narrow stretch of land—the Neck—connected this spot to the rest of the area. The cowherds would block the Neck so horses couldn’t escape.

The horses would be penned in by the natural landscape, enabling cowherds to select the horses they wanted to keep. Once they’d made their selections, they’d remove the obstacles and let the other animals run free.

Legend says that one day, cowherds forgot to take away the block. The horses weren’t able to get free. Supposedly, the horses were left without water and died.

Gruesome, I know.

I keep in mind that stories like these are often apocryphal—meaning they make good stories but aren’t necessarily rooted in fact. I don’t know if that’s the case with Dead Horse Point but I sure hope so.

Maxine and Edie just about revolted every time Hubs and I said the park’s name. Edie took it upon herself to rename the park. Now, in our family, this area is called The Dip. She chose that name because the land takes a big dip—thousands of feet down red cliffs to the valley floor. It’s a much nicer name, don’t you think?

Start at the Visitor Center

Right after you enter Dead Horse Point State Park, you’ll arrive at the visitor center. Insider, you’ll find postcards, gifts and books—the usual. You can even grab a drink and sit on the wide porch overlooking the canyons. The restrooms are also clean—ideal if you’ve been driving a while.

Those things aren’t this spot’s main draw, though.

Leave your car in the parking lot and go straight to the viewpoints.

These spots give you different views of the canyon. Look for the strata in the cliffs—the different layers of rock formed over millions of years. You can see layers of rock formed by petrified sand dunes and even sediments left behind by prehistoric oceans.

Erosion scooped and sculpted the landscape, leaving behind deep canyons, towering spires and high buttes.

A paved path winds along the rim. This is an easy walk for kids and dogs. I don’t believe the path is ADA accessible because it seemed steeper than is allowed in parts and there were cracks in the pavement here and there.

A few benches provide spots to rest and admire the views—or complain and refuse to go farther without M&M’s, as the case may be.

Dead Horse Point Overlook

Next, drive a little farther past the visitor center. Head to the Dead Horse Point Overlook to see the vast landscape spread out 2,000 feet below. You’ll see the Colorado River winding its way through the desert.

The Dead Horse Point Overlook is truly special because you can see nearly 360 degrees around you. Check out the different viewpoints around the overlook. No matter where you stand, you’ll catch breathtaking views.

On the west side of Dead Horse Point Overlook, a raised platform raises you even higher. You can peer almost straight-down into the canyon at the river. This is also an ideal place for a group photo.

You can continue hiking from Dead Horse Point Overlook. Stay on the side of the visitor center to catch the East Rim Trail or walk past the raised platform to connect to the West Rim Trail. (More on hiking below.)

The Dead Horse Point Overlook has plenty of shaded picnic tables and benches, making it an ideal stop for lunch. You can also use the restroom here.

Let the kids climb around on the rocks—but watch them closely. We kept Maxine and Edie away from the edge, which is unfenced. The fall would be catastrophic to say the least. Thankfully, large stone shelves and boulders away from the edge offer plenty of spots for rock climbing.

When you’re driving back toward the visitor center and state park exit, stop at a pullout along the road. Get out of the car for a moment to see the Neck, the narrow stretch of land that connects Dead Horse Point to the rest of the park. The Neck is only 30 yards wide! At this amazing spot, you can see canyons dropping off to your left and right.

You can also walk to these points from the parking lot at the Dead Horse Point Overlook.

Dead Horse Point State Park Yurts and Camping

Dead Horse Point camping is some of the most impressive in the area. Yurts and campsites are located on little hills, giving you an incredible vantage point.

It’s no wonder why this is some of the best camping near Moab, Utah!

My family didn’t camp at Dead Horse Point—this time. We stayed in nearby Moab, about 40 minutes away. A friend of mine camped with her family recently at this Utah state park, though, and she was generous enough to share her camping photos.

One thing I appreciate about Dead Horse Point State Park camping: Campsites are distributed among several campgrounds. That means you never feel crowded.

There are 64 sites total among three campgrounds: Kayenta, Wingate and Moenkopi. Campgrounds include tent sites, yurts, and partial hookup RV sites.

The Dead Horse Point yurts in particular are incredibly popular, so you’ll want to make reservations as soon as you can. Like many camping reservations, you can book a stay six months in advance. Any sooner than that and you’ll have to wait until the reservation system opens availability.

Dead Horse Point Hiking

It’s time to stretch your legs! Good thing Dead Horse Point hiking is so gorgeous.

Several hiking trails wind through Dead Horse Point State Park. It’s easiest to talk about them in two main parts: the East Rim Trail and West Rim Trail.

Hike on the side of the visitor center and you’re on the East Rim Trail. Dead Horse Point Overlook is the dividing line between it and the West Rim Trail.

The East Rim Trail seems to be more popular because you can easily start it from the visitor center—the first stop most visitors make.

The hiking trails involve stepping over (or even climbing) rocks along the clearly marked path. Watch for cairns to show you the way. Dogs are allowed on hiking trails, but bikes are not. (We didn’t hike much here because Luna, our 10-year-old Great Pyrenees, can’t navigate up and over rocks. Her ol’ hips aren’t what they used to be.)

Several spurs jut out from the East Rim and West Rim Trails. These spurs lead to overlooks for more gorgeous views of the canyons.

The West Rim Trail has more views of the Colorado River. It’s the longer of the two—3 miles compared to 1.5 miles. You can combine them for a Dead Horse Point Park hiking loop:

Begin at the visitor center. Walk 1.5 miles along the East Rim Trail. You’ll continue around the Dead Horse Point Overlook, connecting to the West Rim Trail. Keep right at the spur leading to Big Horn Overlook to return to the visitor center. This loop is less than 5 miles, though you will exceed that length if you hike the spurs to overlooks along the way.

In addition to the East and West Rim Trails, you can hike the Bighorn Overlook Trail and Desert View Overlook Trail. The Big Horn Overlook Trail is the least trafficked because it’s a bit out of the way. It’s a great hike if you’re camping in the Kayenta Campground: The trailhead is just past the campground.

Moab mountain biking – Utah

Some of the most popular mountain biking in Utah can be found at Dead Horse Point State Park. Trails wind through the park, taking you through gorgeous desert landscapes.

You’ll find trails beginner through advanced here, near Moab. Your best bet is to check out the map and look for the key on the bottom right.

Here are the mountain biking trails within Dead Horse Point SP:

As you can see, no single trail is particularly long. That’s why it’s common for people to combine trails to make a customized route.

When my family visited Dead Horse Point State Park, we didn’t bike any of the mountain bike trails. We saw plenty of other folks do so, though. We also saw plenty of kids riding the easier trails.

So if you’re looking for Moab mountain biking trails, don’t discount this scenic Utah state park.

Finally, consider some of the other mountain biking in Utah near Dead Horse Point. There are trailheads all along Highway 313. This is the road between Highway 191 (the road Moab and Arches are along) and Dead Horse Point.

Dead Horse Point with Kids

As you can see, I absolutely recommend visiting Dead Horse Point with kids. My girls loved this scenic alternative to Arches National Park.

Although national parks are much better known for their junior ranger programs, some state parks have their own versions. Good news: Dead Horse Point State Park has a junior ranger program, too!

Here’s how to participate:

Stop by the visitor center when you first arrive. A ranger inside will give each of your kids a paper booklet filled with activities.

Kids complete activities as they explore the park. Maxine and Edie got really into their junior ranger booklets!

When you’re ready to leave, stop by the visitor center again. Your kids will show their completed pages to a ranger. The ranger will lead them in saying a pledge, which centers around protecting outdoor spaces.

Then the kids officially become junior rangers—complete with a free badge!

Dead Horse Point State Park with Dogs

National parks, including Arches and Canyonlands, have strict policies about visiting with dogs. State parks are much more flexible.

That means Dead Horse Point State Park is dog-friendly!

Dogs are welcome along all this park’s walking trails, overlooks and other areas to explore. Dogs are not allowed on mountain biking trails.

Pets must be kept on-leash at all times. Please be respectful and clean up dog waste. Don’t leave animals in your car—vehicles can heat up quickly.

What to do if Arches is full

Dead Horse Point State Park is an excellent alternative activity if Arches National Park is full.

Less than a 40-minute drive from the entrance to Arches, this state park is much less popular—and a great option of you can’t get into the national park.

Folks familiar with visiting Arches National Park know that Arches closes when it reaches a maximum number of visitors. If that’s the case, don’t return to Moab. Instead, continue on to Dead Horse Point State Park.

You’ll get to explore another gorgeous outdoor area. It’s hard to feel disappointed when you’re taking in these views!

Start by ascending to new heights at Pikes Peak, otherwise known as America’s Mountain. Feel free to take the Pikes Peak Cog Railway to the top or do an intense, 12.5 mile hike (one way) to the summit of one of the best 14ers near Denver. 

Next, do an easy hike along the Palmer Trail at the one and only Garden of the Gods. It’s one of the best hikes in Colorado and is an easy, 4-mile loop hike to all of the area’s most awe-inspiring red rock formations. 

Afterward, attend a world-class show at Theatreworks before enjoying the Colorado Springs vibrant nightlife along Tejon Street, between Pikes Peak Avenue and Kiowa Street. Local faves include martinis at Blondie’s, line dancing at Cowboys, and admiring the views, around a roaring fire, from the roof of Gasoline Alley.

If you want, you can also pamper yourself with a selection of premium spa treatments, like massages and facials, at Garden of the Gods Club and Resort before heading out to Seven Falls. 

Seven Falls is an awe-inspiring local waterfall that can be reached as you drive through the “Grandest Mile of Scenery” before reaching the base of the waterfall. You’ll then park here and climb 224 steps to get a closer look at this amazing waterfall before embarking on a nice hike through the area. Fort Lauderdale, Florida, once a haven for spring break partiers, is now a great place for couples, families, and of course, a girls trip. With miles of beaches and warm weather, this US girls trip destination makes a great place to get away with your friends.

Make sure to book Ft. Lauderdale lodging right on the beachfront. Then you will have a picturesque view of the sun rising above the ocean and won’t have to lug your beach gear very far. By staying on the beach you will have numerous bars and restaurants to explore all within walking distance. 

When you get bored relaxing on sandy beaches (is that even possible!) and catching up with your friends, take the free water taxi to bar hop. Or for a luxury boat ride, you can charter a yacht to take you cruising along the Intracoastal waterway. Newport, Rhode Island

Toronto is among the best destinations for a girl’s trip because it is home to friendly people, easy-going vibes, lots of unique attractions, a ton of green space to explore, and a diverse culinary scene.

One of the best things to do in Toronto is to visit the CN Tower. Standing at 553 meters, it dominates the city’s skyline. You can take the elevator up to the main lookout level and enjoy the panoramic city views. It also has a revolving restaurant that offers both incredible food and incredible views.

If you and your friends love shopping, then head right to the Eaton Center. It spans two city blocks, boasts over 250 retail stores, and holds the title of the busiest mall in North America.

Then, be sure to grab a bite at St. Lawrence Market. There are more than 120 local vendors here in this historic market. They sell everything from fresh produce and seafood to baked goods, spices, and specialty items, so there’s something for everyone.

Orlando, Florida

Orlando is just for family vacations, right? Wrong! Seventy-six million people visit Orlando every year, including couples, groups, and besties. Who doesn’t love sunshine, fun resorts with swimming pools and parks packed with rides? That’s why I’m recommending Orlando as an amazing girls trip destination.

The most popular attractions in Orlando include Walt Disney World, Universal Studios and things to do on International Drive*, which runs between the two theme park resorts. 

Walt Disney World is split into four parks and two waterparks, so you can literally spend your whole vacation watching the Disney Parade, losing your stomach to the Tower of Terror, traveling around the world at EPCOT and going on a safari. 

If your time is limited to a long weekend, dedicate a day to Disney, another to Universal (fierce rides and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter) and dine at Disney Springs or I-Drive. If visiting during the low season, such as January, you can get around the parks a few times a day using dedicated line skips which are worth investing in all year round.

Other activities include tanning by the resort pool, dining on I-Drive, which caters for every style of meal from fine dining (Jack’s Place) to casual cocktails (The Hampton Social), shopping at Disney Springs (Fabletics and MAC), parachuting without a plane at iFly and crazy golf. 

Note: The stretch between Walt Disney and Universal Studios is 8 miles, so don’t underestimate the need for transport. Once you’ve decided which activities the girls want to do, choose a hotel resort closest to most attractions and/or make sure the hotel offers bus services to parks or that the Uber cost is affordable. Also, most hotels add a resort fee to the overall price.

Maui, Hawaii Girls Trip Ideas

One of the best places for a girls’ trip in Hawaii is the island of Maui because there are so many memory-making opportunities. You can head up to Haleakala Crater in the middle of the night to see an epic sunrise that some people say is a religious experience.

Moab, Utah

Are you looking for an excellent girls trip destination? You absolutely must check out Moab, Utah! Most would rather go on a girls vacation to places like New York City or Las Vegas, but Moab is completely underrated. It’s an outdoor lover’s paradise, perfect for those who want to explore the wilderness and go on hikes during their vacation.

There’s so much to do in Moab. The most popular thing to do is visit Arches National Park, one of the most popular national parks in the country. It’s only a short drive from downtown, but try to get there bright and early to avoid the heat. In the park, you can hike to Delicate Arch, Double Arch, the Windows, and even through Park Avenue. There are also easy hikes in Arches too. Don’t forget to do the scenic drive!

Another great place to visit around Moab is Canyonlands National Park, which most people tend to overlook because of Arches. However, Canyonlands is truly a hidden gem in the National Park Service. In Canyonlands, the best place to visit is the Island in the Sky district. There, you can hike to False Kiva or Mesa Arch; two gorgeous spots! On your drive to Canyonlands, you can also pull off at Dead Horse Point State Park.

Virginia Beach, VA

Virginia Beach is a great girls trip destination on the East Coast—and here’s why! There is so much to do within walking distance of the beach, but also lots of space to relax with friends. Virginia Beach has 28 miles of beautiful sandy beaches to explore, lots of great restaurants, and plenty of unique activities. 

I recently went on a girls’ trip of all working moms to Virginia Beach and it could not have been better! We stayed in a vacation rental one block from the Boardwalk and Beach. We walked to some great local restaurants and could also order in with lots of delivery options in the area. I especially recommend Commune for brunch with lots of gluten-free options. There are also many great boardwalk hotels to choose from at all different price points from high-end to family-friendly. 

Virginia Beach is the largest city in the state and has so much to do beyond the beach. You can rent a surrey bike (the largest fits 8—ideal for a girls trip group) and bike along the 3-mile-long boardwalk, enjoy a boat ride on the Atlantic, check out one of 10 local spas or go hiking in nearby state parks. Whether you are looking for a trip full of outdoor adventures or looking for time to relax, Banff is the ideal place for a girls trip. There’s plenty to do in Banff National Park to fill a weekend or even a week.

To get the most out of a visit to Banff, hit the must-visit places like Lake Louise, Moraine Lake and a hike to Johnston Canyon. While visiting Lake Louise and Moraine Lake, leave some time to take in one of the stunning hikes in the area. From Lake Louise, hike to the Lake Agnes teahouse or the Plain of Six Glaciers teahouse. Originally a small fishing village, Playa del Carmen is now a vibrant beach town and one of the most visited tourist destinations in Mexico. With tropical white sand beaches, a lively downtown area, and tons of tours and activities, Playa del Carmen is a fun girls trip destination for a relaxing vacation or adventurous retreat.  

The town is centered around Fifth Avenue (“La Quinta Avenida” in Spanish), which is a vibrant pedestrian-only street that spans for more than 20 blocks, and where you’ll find the majority of restaurants, bars, nightlife, and shopping. Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica

Costa Rica is one of the most beautiful countries in the world and, in my opinion, the safest country in Central America. These are just a few reasons that make it a great location for a girl’s trip in 2022.

Despite its small size, with its vast landscapes, diverse wildlife, stunning beaches, friendly people, and good food, Cost Rica has something for every taste. There are many areas to consider when vacationing in Costa Rica but Manuel Antonio makes a great destination for a girl’s trip especially if you have a long weekend to explore. 

The national park in Manuel Antonio is loaded with beautiful beaches, active wildlife, and stunning sunsets. (Watch out for the naughty monkeys: They love to steal food!)

Manuel Antonio is only a few hours away from San Jose Airport and 4 miles north of the small but lively town of Quepos, where you can plan a fun night out. Stay in a cozy beach bungalow overlooking the beach at Hotel Costa Verde or opt for a luxury experience at Arenas del Mar. There are plenty of pristine beaches to relax at and top-rated full-service spas.

Milos, Greece Girls Trip

The Greek island of Milos is the perfect destination for a girls trip. If you and your friends enjoy off the beaten track destinations and love exploring beautiful nature, this Greek island is for you! Milos is a lesser-known Cycladic island with a lot of charm and plenty of fun things to do!

One of the best places to stay in Milos is the island’s biggest town Adamas. The town has excellent accommodation options, good restaurants and nightlife. Visit the epic Serakiniko Beach with its peculiar landscape resembling the moon. Serakiniko is a beautiful place to take some epic photos and a lovely beach to catch some sun and swim in the turquoise water that reflects the surrounding white rock.

Another fantastic beach to spend a day on is Tsigrado Beach, situated in the southern part of Milos. Getting to the beach is an adventure in its own right because you will need to climb a steep ladder to get to the beach! For chilled sunset drinks and dinner, head to the traditional fishing village of Klima.

An excellent way to explore the island is by hiring an ATV. Milos has lots of dirt tracks, and an ATV is a safe and fun way of going around the island.

The best time to visit Milos is from May to September, but skip July and August if you want to avoid the island’s peak season.

Andalucia, Spain

The region of Andalucia in southern Spain is a great place for a girls trip. For a start, the weather is glorious pretty much all year round, it’s incredibly safe and there is so much to see, from stunning historical cities such as Cordoba, Seville and Granada as well as beautiful beaches. If you prefer to get away from the crowds, Andalucia is also home to some pretty impressive national parks. 

The best way to get a flavor of the region is by planning a road trip in Andalucia. Driving in Spain is easy, the roads are well maintained, and rental cars are available from all major cities. 

If you’re most interested in beaches, then a great route is from Malaga to Cadiz. Enjoy the beaches in and around Malaga, before heading south, stop off in Marbella (the historical centre is adorable). Keep following the coast down – if you have time, do a day trip into Gibraltar – before hitting Tarifa, which is known for wind sports, and then to Bolonia beach to see the giant sand dunes. Continue along the coast, ending up in the ancient city of Cadiz.

If you prefer UNESCO landmarks, then a great option is to start in Seville and enjoy the Alcazar, Bario Santa Cruz and the Cathedral. From here head towards Cordoba to visit the visually stunning Mezquita, the mosque-cathedral. From here continue on to Granada, where you will find the Alhambra. Ideally, you’ll want to spend a couple of days at each location. 

If you have the time, then you can do both of these mini-itineraries as a loop over a couple of weeks.

Budapest, Hungary

Black Forest, Germany

If you’re looking for unique girls trip ideas, consider Black Forest, Germany. Not many international girls trips head here, but they’re missing out!

The Black Forest of Germany (called Schwarzwald in German) is a region in the southwest of Germany, in the state of Baden-Württemberg, that is famous for its cakes, cuckoo clocks and spas.

There are many fun things to do in the Black Forest perfect for a girls trip. First of all, because the black forest cake originated here in this region, you can devour endless cakes together. (YUM!) The cherry on the cake is that in Germany, it is a rule that the black forest cake is always to be served with kirschwasser, an alcoholic spirit.

Next, spend a relaxing day for two in the spa town of Baden-Baden, which is a UNESCO world Heritage Site because of its natural thermal spas.

Looking for the best destination for a girls trip in 2022? Head to the foodie capital of Italy: Bologna!

Located in the heart of Italy’s food valley, Emilia Romagna, Bologna is the place to sample the country’s most famous food products like Modena balsamic vinegar, prosciutto de Parma, and Parmigiano Reggiano. 

If sipping Sangiovese over an Italian charcuterie board sounds like fun, Bologna will be a blast! Stroll through the Quadrilatero in the center of the city. If you’re looking for an off the beaten path girls trip destination, Meghalaya, India should be on your radar. Its natural beauty and welcoming spirit mean this area is a once in a lifetime place for your friends trip.

Meghalaya, the wettest state of India, is located in the northeast part of the country. It is known as the Scotland of the East because of its picturesque location and natural scenic beauty. Martinborough, New Zealand

Just over the Remutaka Ranges from Wellington, NZ, Martinborough has some of the best food, wine, and shopping in New Zealand all in one place.

Surrounded by rolling green hills and miles of vineyards, this is the picture-perfect small town New Zealand. Gather your girlfriends and book a cottage complete with spa pool and fireplace. The slow pace of life here is a great opportunity to unwind. 

Martinborough is easily walkable, or you can hire a car and explore the Wairarapa region. Nearby Featherston is famous for its cheese store, C’est Cheese, while Greytown has the best boutiques and great cafes.

Martinborough’s main attraction is the wineries, with more than 30 around the township. Spend a day walking, biking, or driving a rickshaw between the wineries, stopping off for tastings and snacks. Poppies is known for platters while Luna Estate has Asian-inspired small bites. Don’t miss the Pinot Noir at Moy Hall or the Lighthouse Gin outpost at Te Kairanga.

On Sundays in summer there’s the a farmers market where you’ll find live music and the best local produce. Otherwise, try biking part of the Remutaka cycle trail or visiting Stonehenge Aotearoa and their dark sky experiences.

Cappadocia, Turkey

Cappadocia, one of the most picturesque regions in central Turkey, is a fantastic place for a memorable girls trip. Located in the foothills of the Himalayas, Rishikesh is a popular destination worldwide. It is so because it is known as the Yoga Capital of the World. Another claim to fame for Rishikesh, India: the famous English band The Beatles visited the place in 1968 to learn meditation.

The Ganges river flows through the town, and hence the place is also a sacred place and holds great importance in Hindu mythology.

Several ashrams and centers offer yoga and meditation classes, perfect for your girls trip. Parmarth Niketan Ashram and Shivanand Ashram are some top places to learn yoga. The city offers river rafting, trekking, bungee jumping, camping, paragliding, and more for adventure lovers. Some places of interest around the city are Lakshman Jhula, Ram Jhula, The Beatles Ashram, and Parmarth Niketan Ashram.

Retreats in Chiang Mai & Chiang Rai, Thailand

Thailand is a firm favourite for any type of girls holiday, whether you’re looking for a city break, temple exploration or tropical island getaway. However, although the capital of Bangkok is great as a starting point during your Thailand itinerary, it is somewhat full-on.

If you’re looking for a girls trip that still keeps the buzz of a city but at a more tranquil pace then head up to the north of the country to the ‘sister’ cities, Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. The areas surrounding these cities are lush and green with tea plantations and jungle.

Chiang Mai has an eclectic mix of old versus new, with plenty of hipster cafes, restaurants, hotels and independent shops all nestled within the Old City walls and moats. This is also a great hub if you’re interested in trying out some adventure sports with white water rafting and ziplining all in the region. 

Chiang Ria is the little sister to Chiang Mai and is surrounded by rugged jungles. It’s also in close proximity to some of Thailand’s more unusual temples, including Wat Rong Khun, “White Temple,” Wat Rong Sua Ten, “Blue Temple,” and quirky Baan Si Dum, “Black House.”

Both of these cities share some great retreats, perfect for a girls holiday. Retreats can be a single day and up to two weeks. The most popular ones are based on spirituality and wellness, with yoga, meditation and mindfulness being the top options.

If you’re more interested in a retreat that focuses on volunteering, then the north of Thailand is also where you can book several day retreats at an ethical elephant sanctuary. If you do opt for this, then do thorough research into the elephant sanctuary. Avoid anything that offers elephant riding, where elephants are chained or the mahout (the keeper responsible for the elephant) uses a hooked stick.

The Great Ocean Road in Australia is a scenic stretch which runs from Torquay to Port Fairy in Victoria. It is approx. 140 kilometres in length and the perfect road trip for a girls getaway. If you want to go completely overboard book, accommodation at one of the many luxury resorts around the city. You may want to book a seaside resort on the Palm Island or Jumeirah, or you might prefer a top-notch hotel in downtown Dubai close to all the impressive ultra-modern skyscrapers.

Once you settle at your accommodation, you will want to set some time aside to explore the beauty of the city. You can start with some shopping at the Dubai Mall, one of the largest shopping centers in the world and the largest one in the UAE. The views from up there are breathtaking and you can really say that you are on “top of the world”! In the evening, don’t skip the mesmerizing Dubai Fountain show.

Just a half-hour drive from the Strip, this easy hike is 100% doable in a half-day. So if you want to spend part of the day at the pool or exploring the kid-friendly casino attractions, you still have plenty of time to hike the Kraft Boulders and Kraft Mountain Loop.

You’ll want to visit this spot even more if you’re into rock climbing. It’s a popular bouldering location in Las Vegas. You’ll see many people hiking in with crash pads—the portable pad rock climbers place under themselves while bouldering.

Kraft Boulders Hike

One day on our most recent Las Vegas trip, Edie had a cold and was not feeling hiking. In fact, she wasn’t feeling anything but sick. But we basically forced her to come on the Kraft Boulders hike—and we’re all glad for it!

Edie perked up immediately. She and Maxine are pretty much obsessed with climbing anything and everything, so the Kraft Boulders were right up their alley.

From the parking lot, start out along the trail, marked by a black metal National Conservation Lands sign. Walk about a quarter-mile to reach the base of Kraft Mountain.

Here, huge hunks of rock fell from the mountain over the ages. Rocks create a jumble of climbing opportunities. Maxine and Edie wasted no time in scaling boulders and trekking up the mountain.

The hike to the Kraft Boulders can be as long or as short as you want. You can continue down the trail, adjacent to Kraft Mountain, to boulders farther along. Or you can pause and explore around the first, enormous boulder you’ll see: a red hunk of mountain several stories high.

As you hike, keep an eye out for horseback riders. One incredibly friendly rider stopped near us so Maxine and Edie could pet his horse. That was the cherry on top of our beautiful Kraft Boulders hike!

Kraft Mountain Loop

For a longer hike near Las Vegas, continue along the Kraft Mountain Loop. This 3.5 mile hike is on the harder side of moderate and takes you all around the pink mountain. The hike gains just over 600 feet in elevation altogether.

The hike includes several scrambles and a few steep sections. If you complete the loop, you’ll be rewarded with impressive views—including toward the nearby Red Rock Canyon.

Know that the Kraft Mountain Loop trail is not well marked. It can be even more confusing to do this hike because there are several options for routes. I recommend downloading a detailed map onto your phone, or printing one, because cell service is unreliable here.

Bouldering near Las Vegas

Whether you’re a pro or you’re wanting to learn bouldering near Las Vegas, the Kraft Boulders are a great destination.

With so many boulders and rock formations, you’ll always be able to find an open rock or route. The problems (climbing routes) range from beginner to advanced. Bouldering is a great way to begin rock climbing because you don’t need as much gear. Just remember to always climb with a spotter and a crash pad below!

Bouldering etiquette applies at the Kraft Boulders, of course. Don’t cut in, interfere with or distract other climbers. And as always, respect the outdoors: Pack out everything, as there is no trash service in this Las Vegas bouldering site.

Other hiking near Las Vegas

If you’re into the outdoors, you should definitely go hiking near Las Vegas. The desert landscape is gorgeous in a way that’s completely different than our home base in the Pacific Northwest.

Hiking near Las Vegas is also an excellent alternative to the more typical Sin City activities (cough, cough). Hitting the trails is also a super kid-friendly activity, especially considering that casinos aren’t exactly kid central.

Red Rock Canyon

Mere minutes from the Kraft Boulders, the Red Rock Canyon scenic route loops through epic landscapes. Wonderful hikes branch off from the scenic road. The only bad thing is that you’ll have to choose where to stop and hike: You won’t be able to trek all of them in a day.

My entire family loved Red Rock Canyon. It’s amazing how much the scenery changes in just a few miles. Look one direction to see bright red rocks and another for white cliffs sprinkled with snow.

I recommend either Calico I or Calico II as some of the most iconic Red Rock Canyon trails.

Valley of Fire

My other favorite hiking near Las Vegas is in Valley of Fire State Park. Just an hour drive from the city, you’ll feel like you’re a million miles away. The stark landscape is crisscrossed with unforgettable hiking trails.

The Fire Wave Trail is #1 among our favorite Valley of Fire hikes. Most of the trails here are short and easy enough for kids and hikers without much experience. The incredible rock formations are unforgettable.

Directions from Las Vegas to Kraft Boulders

Here’s how to get from Las Vegas to the Kraft Boulders and Kraft Mountain Loop.

Drive west on US-95 N.

Take exit 81A onto Summerlin Parkway.

For 5.5 miles, continue along Summerlin Parkway / NV-613.

Take the 215-S exit onto the Bruce Woodbury Beltway.

Take exit 26 onto Charleston Blvd / NV-159.

Follow Charleston Blvd / NV-159 for 3.7 miles. Take a right on Calico Basin Blvd. (Calico Basin Blvd is the road after the turnoff for Red Rock Canyon Campground. If you see the entrance to Red Rock Canyon, you’ve gone too far.)

In this residential area, continue along Calico Basin Blvd. until it takes a sharp right at the Calico Basin Trailhead. Take a right here onto Calico Drive, then an immediate left to Sandstone Drive. Continue until the end of Sandstone. On the left, use the parking lot for the Kraft Boulders.

If the parking lot is full, you can park along the street—just pay attention to areas where this is allowed and where it is not.

Although the city’s reputation as Sin City might make you raise an eyebrow at me, taking kids to Las Vegas is actually a great idea. Here’s why.

1. Las Vegas is a budget-friendly destination. It is typically inexpensive to fly to Las Vegas. We flew there as a family of 4 for less than $500.
2. Las Vegas has great weather in the winter. We fly to Vegas when it’s cold, rainy and grey in our home base of Oregon. The vitamin D is 100% worth the trip.
3. There are so many awesome things for kids to do in Las Vegas!

In this post, I’m highlighting the family-friendly activities and attractions in Las Vegas that make my kids love visiting. (Nevermind that my kids pronounce the city as “Lost Vegas.”)

I get it: When you’re planning a family trip in an unfamiliar place, a list of kid activities is helpful. But you know what’s better? A map!

That’s why I made this map of things for kids to do in Las Vegas.

At a glance, you can see where everything is. You can open up the map and pin the kid friendly hotel in Vegas where you’re staying. Then easily see where you are in relation to these fun things to do with kids.

You can even download the map onto your phone so you can reference it anytime.

1. Springs Preserve

When I planned our first family trip to Las Vegas, I was surprised to find a nature preserve in the city. Isn’t Las Vegas in the middle of a desert?

Yes, of course, and Springs Preserve protects a portion of that desert—and much more.

As I learned, the 180-acre Springs Preserve is like a combination nature park / playground / natural history museum / hands-on museum. And admission gets you into everything.

My kids loved seeing desert animals such as snakes and scorpions—all in cages, don’t worry!—in the animal area of the museum. We walked along winding paths that took us through various desert habitats and past dry weather-loving plants.

That said, we all agreed that the butterfly house was by far the best part!

The enclosed butterfly habitat is open seasonally, in spring and fall. The winter weather is too cold for butterflies and summer temperatures too hot. We were lucky enough to visit Springs Preserve, Las Vegas on the last day the butterfly habitat was open!

Pro tip: Consider buying a membership to Springs Preserve, like we did, even if you don’t live in Las Vegas. That’s because membership here gets you benefits to more than 300 reciprocating organizations all across the country!

2. Walk the Strip

Las Vegas’s most famous landmark is the Strip, and for good reason. It is the perfect example of what makes Vegas the over-the-top city it is: lights, lights, and more lights!

(Oh, and people. Lots of people, too.)

Especially if it’s your first time checking out Las Vegas kids activities, put walking the Strip onto your things to do list. Your kids will be blown away by the sights and sounds.

Pro tip: If your kids have special sensory needs, plan ahead. They may want to wear noise-canceling headphones or skip this family activity in Las Vegas altogether.

As you walk, pause to take in the cool sights and attractions of each casino. We particularly like the Greek sculptures and fountain outside Caesar’s Palace and of course the Bellagio fountain.

Pro tip: Carry cash! I rarely pay with anything besides a card so had to borrow a few bucks from my mother-in-law to pay the performers who walk around the Strip and take photos with tourists. Thanks Mom!

3. Valley of Fire State Park

One of my all-time favorite things to do in Las Vegas with kids: Leave the city behind and explore Valley of Fire State Park!

This state park is home to the best family-friendly hikes near Las Vegas. The park lies just an hour east of the Strip, making it an easy day trip as long as you’ve rented a car (or driven your own).

Valley of Fire is also full of kid-friendly hikes. The trails don’t gain a lot of elevation, most are less than 3 miles long and they have incredible payoffs, such as the famous Fire Wall.

Within Valley of Fire State Park, you can also see petroglyphs left behind from thousands of years ago. Kids (and their grownups!) are also welcome to climb the enormous red boulders and stone formations. Beehives, directly next to the park’s west entrance, provides the best place for kids to practice their lemur skills.

4. Seven Magic Mountains

If you’re looking for giant, rainbow-hued installation art, Seven Magic Mountains is just for you. This permanent art piece is made up of brightly colored rocks stacked on top of each other. They make a surreal sight in the middle of the stark Mojave Desert.

You won’t need a whole lot of time at Seven Magic Mountains. Kids are welcome to run around, and you’ll definitely want to take photos.

Seven Magic Mountains are about a half-hour’s drive south of the Strip. They are on your way if you’re driving from California via Bakersfield or LA.

5. Explore inside the Casinos—it’s possible with kids!

If you’re going to Las Vegas with kids, you may be confused about the rules around children in casinos. Here’s the deal: Children cannot stop in casinos anywhere near gambling. So if you’re walking through a casino and want to drop a few bucks in a slot machine, no-can-do if you’re with anyone younger than 18.

That said, you can walk through casinos as a family! In fact, many of the casinos have sections that welcome children.

Keep in mind that people still smoke in casinos in Las Vegas. We limited the amount of time we spent in casinos at one time. Many areas that are focused on family friendly activities, such as the Bellagio Conservatory & Botanical Gardens, aren’t filled with smoke. You have to walk past the cigarette-heavy slot machines to get there, though.

The extravagance of casinos is next-level—and definitely worth a place on your list of things to do in Las Vegas with kids.

6. Fremont Street, Las Vegas

Casinos can be a lot for anyone—including kids. The lights, the crowds, the noise, the smoke… it can be overwhelming!

If you want to give your kids a smaller scale experience of casinos, try the Fremont Street area.

About a 10-minute drive from the strip, you’ll find casinos, shops, restaurants and more. An open-air plaza that spans several blocks connects the buildings so you can walk easily between attractions.

Basically, Fremont Street is a slightly scaled down version of the strip. You can walk two blocks to get a sense of it—then wrap it up.

7. Las Vegas Street Art

My family and I seek out street art wherever we go, and Las Vegas is no exception. We loved finding Las Vegas street art, making this one of the best kid-friendly activities we did in Vegas!

The Las Vegas Arts Distric is an excellent place to begin. Look for murals all along Main St: There’s hardly a building that doesn’t have art on its walls.

You can also find epic murals near the Art Hotel. You probably won’t be able to get inside this hotel, which has become the canvas for hundreds of artists, but you can explore the blocks around it. In fact, you can even book a Las Vegas Flytographer photo shoot like we did! The murals make for incredible backdrops. I’m still absolutely in love with our photos. (I paid in full for our shoot; we didn’t receive any discounts. I just genuinely loved our experience.)

8. Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art: Free museum in Vegas

If you and your kids want to see a different kind of art, check out the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art. On the UNLV campus, this free museum in Las Vegas is small enough to see in one doable visit, and robust enough for the visit to be well worth the trip.

I love the museum’s dedication to making the experience of art more diverse and more welcoming to all people. Its collections focus on perspectives too often marginalized by art institutions, especially the voices of people of color and artists who are LGBTQIA+.

In addition, the art museum is open to all—regardless of how much money you have in your pocket. Admission is free, and the suggested donation for adults is $5—and totally optional.

If you need a break from the glitz of Las Vegas, take a breather in the free art museum on the UNLV campus.

9. Discovery Children’s Museum, Las Vegas

Maxine and Edie are obsessed with hands-on science museums. The Discovery Children’s Museum in Las Vegas didn’t disappoint!

Like many other children’s museums, this Las Vegas kids museum is full of different areas and rooms focused on science, art and other themes. My kids adored the maker’s area, where they nailed and hot glued inventions and artwork.

Kids can also climb several stories up in a multi-tiered structure. Tunnels, ladders, steps and even hollow tubes where you can make music: You’ll find it all in the Discovery Children’s Museum central structure.

Don’t miss the water area, too! The Las Vegas kids museum provides ponchos so your kids don’t get drenched playing and splashing here.

10. Las Vegas Natural History Museum

Another destination to add to your list of things for kids to do in Las Vegas: the Las Vegas Natural History Museum.

From prehistoric fossils to live sharks, the natural history museum has it all. Kids will particularly love the dinosaur exhibits (models look incredibly realistic), the dioramas with lifesize animals and the Egyptian exhibit. The museum recently added this awesome model of a dilophasaurus, based on the largest specimen of the species!

When researchers aren’t in the field, they may be working in the museum. The Ditton Learning Lab is usually open to the public on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

A hands-on section of the museum, called the Cox Charities Young Scientist Center, encourages littles to experiment with fossil excavation, microscopes and more.

Pro tip: The Las Vegas Natural History Museum has free parking!

11. Welcome to Las Vegas Sign

Admittedly, the Welcome to Las Vegas sign is a semi-obligatory tourist trap. You may find yourself waiting a long time for your chance to take a photo in front of the iconic sign. So if that’s not your thing, feel free to skip this family friendly activity in Las Vegas!

That said, if you visit during off-peak times of year—like in the winter, when we visited—you may find the lines are minimal. I went one morning in November and waited maybe 10 minutes. Not bad!

You can also try to visit the Welcome to Las Vegas thing first thing in the morning. If your kids are early risers, hit it up before all the revelers have dragged themselves out of bed!

Pro tip: If you want a Las Vegas sign photo op but don’t want to deal with crowds, check out the Downtown Las Vegas Gateway. You’ll see a big Las Vegas sign, light-up showgirl signs and enormous dice. Find this Las Vegas landmark at the intersection of Las Vegas Boulevard and Main Street, at 1810 Las Vegas Boulevard.

12. Container Park, Las Vegas

If you’re looking to venture off the beaten path in Las Vegas, check out Container Park. This is a community-centric area where you can shop, grab a bite to eat and—have I mentioned?—let your kids run wild in an awesome playground.

The Container Park playground looks like a treehouse and industrial shipping container had a baby—then added a bunch of winding slides for good measure. It’s awesome.

We also like Container Park’s enormous metal praying mantis. It’s not that often you get to see a bug the size of a house!

The praying mantis lights up at night, too!

13. Red Rock Canyon

Las Vegas is known for its neon lights, but just outside the city, you’ll be blown away by another color: red. Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area is just a half-hour drive off the Strip and 100% worth a visit.

A scenic drive winds through Red Rock Canyon passes deep red cliffs, umber rocks and white-and-pink-striped canyons. My goodness it’s gorgeous.

You can find lots of kid-friendly hikes in Red Rock Canyon, including the children’s discovery trail that takes you to a small petroglyph. Make sure you stop at the visitors center at the entrance to pick up a Junior Ranger booklet, stamp your national parks book and get a Junior Ranger badge!

14. Kraft Boulders hike

Just a few minutes down the road from Red Rock, you’ll find an easy and family friendly hike. A mostly flat trail leads to the Kraft Boulders, hunks of Kraft Mountain that have tumbled down and made excellent bouldering sites for rock climbers.

(Maxine and Edie haven’t been trained as rock climbers, but it clearly comes naturally to them.)

Hiking to the Kraft Boulders is a great outdoor thing to do with kids in Vegas. What’s more, it’s the perfect antidote to neon overwhelm. Hike as far as you and your family likes, and let your kids embrace their inner mountain goat.

Is Las Vegas worth it for families?

Yes. I’m going to be straight-up here and say I don’t love Las Vegas as a city overall. I don’t drink much, gambling gives me the hives and whenever I stay up past 9:30 pm I marvel that I made it past my bedtime.

But Las Vegas is totally worth it for families.

I say that for a few reasons. Firstly, getting to and staying in Las Vegas is cheap, at least from where we live in Portland, Oregon. Las Vegas is consistently the cheapest place to fly from PDX. Both times we’ve flown to Las Vegas as a family, I got tickets for around $125 round-trip. Hotels are also less expensive than other parts of the country. You may even be able to get a suite or adjoining rooms for a similar price as a single, standard room elsewhere.

Secondly, this is a great destination because of alllllll the fun things for kids to do in Las Vegas. There are seriously so many great family-friendly activities and attractions.

I know the sign says, “Welcome to Las Vegas,” but I like to think it says, “Come back soon.” With so many family friendly things to do in Las Vegas, there’s a good chance we will!

Las Vegas isn’t typically known for its outdoor adventures, and that’s too bad. Because just outside the city, you can find epic landscapes.

You’ll feel like you’ve been transported to another planet when you’re surrounded by vibrant rocks and jagged cliffs. Thankfully, you won’t need intergalactic transport; you just need a rental car to visit Valley of Fire State Park.

Drive just an hour from the center of Las Vegas to these Valley of Fire hikes. You won’t regret it for a second.

Valley of Fire State Park

Valley of Fire State Park is one of the most beautiful destinations near Las Vegas, Nevada, you can hope to see. This park covers a stark area of the Mojave Desert. Its distinctive red, pink and striped rocks will take your breath away.

This Las Vegas state park isn’t actually in Las Vegas but is close enough for an easy day trip from the Strip. I think of it as the perfect antidote to the excesses of Las Vegas.

With the many Valley of Fire hikes, petroglyphs, rock formations and many other things to do, it’s like a breath of fresh air—literally.

Valley of Fire Hikes

There’s a lot to love about Valley of Fire State Park. First is its beauty. Second is the ease of getting to Valley of Fire from Las Vegas. (Yay convenience!) The third is that the park is full of hikes suitable for most visitors.

You see, many famous parks are crisscrossed by trails that are extremely challenging. That means that you have to dedicate hours (plus a lot of sweat and effort) to reach the most memorable areas. That’s not really feasible for a lot of visitors—especially kids.

Valley of Fire hikes, on the other hand, are mostly easy to moderate. You won’t be climbing a ton of elevation, and several are under 2 miles. (That’s a great length for my kids!)

Want to plan some breathtaking Valley of Fire hiking? Read on for descriptions of the best trails in this Nevada state park—and the best Las Vegas hikes you’ll find.

Fire Wave Trail

The Fire Wave trail is one of the most iconic Valley of Fire hikes. Don’t miss this trail!

You’ll hike over stone as well as a sandy trail. Along the route, see brilliant orange, red and striped sandstone. Follow yellow markers (and the rest of the hikers) to reach the famous Fire Wave.

Here are the must-know details for the Fire Wave Trail, impressive Valley of Fire hiking:

• 1.5 miles out and back
• Some elevation
• Easy to moderate trail
• Kid-friendly for children who have some stamina
• Sun exposure: Avoid hiking at midday

Rocks here are layered with iron and manganese, which account for the different colors of stripes. Wind, water and erosion create otherworldly shapes in the sandstone. The swirls look a bit like a chocolate-vanilla ice cream cone, twisted together. (The hot environment makes me want soft serve, I guess!)

The beginning of the trail is the most sandy section. Footing gets easier as you progress. You’ll need to walk over uneven stone, though, as you’re hiking over rock rather than a manicured trail.

After that, look for posts with a yellow flash on them to mark the trail. You can roam over the red stone and climb boulders, like my kids loved to do.

The Fire Wave is unmistakable. This incredible rock formation, which looks like striped taffy left to harden in a twisted mound, marks the end of the Fire Wave Trail.

Rainbow Vista Valley of Fire

To enjoy this Valley of Fire hike, park in the paved lot. Follow the well-used, sandy trail to the Fire Canyon overlook, which gives you impressive views of red sandstone rock formations. Take your time, as hiking through sand is more tiring than walking along pavement.

To reach the Rainbow Vista trail, turn off the Valley of Fire Highway onto Mouse’s Tank Road. Continue past the visitor center. Park in the lot on the right-hand (east) side of the road. There is a bathroom here; use the facilities before you hike because there is no toilet along the hike.

Here are the must-know details for the Rainbow Vista, a Valley of Fire hike:

• 1.2 miles out and back
• Flat and kid-friendly
• Sun exposure: Avoid hiking at midday

White Domes Valley of Fire Trail

To hike the White Domes Trail, turn off the Valley of Fire Highway onto Mouse’s Tank Road. Continue past the visitor center. Drive all the way to the end of White Domes Road, where you’ll park in a day use lot.

Some of the trail is sandy, which requires a bit more effort to walk across. The extra work is well worth it! You’ll hike past impressive red sandstone formations, some jutting up like mini-mountains and others stretching across the landscape.

About a third of a mile into the trail, you’ll come across “ruins.” These aren’t remains of prehistoric communities; they’re leftovers from a film set!

The White Domes trail leads you through a (very short) slot canyon in Valley of Fire. The narrows here wind you through a section of the trail where you can reach out and touch both sides of the canyon.

Valley of Fire Hikes: Safety Tips

Valley of Fire hikes are generally safe: Most have little elevation gain, and most trails are well marked. That said, you should still take precautions: Always know where you’re going (download maps or check at the visitor center).

In addition, whenever you’re trekking on Valley of Fire hikes, bring more water than you think you’ll need. Standard recommendations point to drinking about a liter an hour when you’re in the desert.

The dry desert air leaches water out of your body, and hiking in the desert will work up a sweat. You might not realize how much you’re sweating, though, because it may evaporate off your skin before you realize it. So pay close attention to your thirst and err on the side of drinking more than you think you need.

Take precautions against the sun, too. Lather up frequently with a high SPF sunblock, even in the winter. (We like this SPF 50, reef-friendly, delicious-smelling sunscreen. Even the kids like it better than most!) Wear a hat that covers your face and ears. And wear UPF clothing (like this super-light zip-up jacket with UPF 50, which comes in a ton of colors).

Nevada Petroglyphs: Atlatl Rock and Petroglyph Canyon Trail

Valley of Fire petroglyphs can be found near the park’s west entrance, at Atlatl Rock. You can see these 4,000-year-old Nevada petroglyphs up-close by climbing the stairs in the site.

Experts don’t know what the petroglyphs mean, but my kids loved guessing at what the symbols could represent. The big horn sheep are pretty clear!

Unfortunately, you’ll see vandalism alongside the petroglyphs. The insensitivity and disregard of vandals blows my mind. To preserve the petroglyphs, do not touch them or the surrounding rocks, and report any vandalism you see.

Atlatl Rock and the petroglyphs are just a short distance from the Valley of Fire campgrounds. Make sure you visit this ancient art!

You can see even more petroglyphs along a short hike called Petroglyph Canyon Trail. As its name suggests, the hike takes you through towering sandstone rocks that Native Americans etched with their art. This hike is just .75 miles—an easy hike with big payoff.

Watch for blackened areas on the rocks. These weren’t burned but rather have a patina, or layer, of stone where the iron minerals oxidized. Scraping away this top black layer shows the red and orange beneath. This is how the artists left their mark, literally, on the landscape.

Petroglyph Canyon Trail also takes you to Mouse’s Tank. This is where the rocks form a natural trough that holds water—quite the feat in the Valley of Fire desert! Do not drink from it—the water is definitely not potable. Mouse’s Tank is a neat feature along this trail, though.

Elephant Rock, Valley of Fire

Near the east Valley of Fire park entrance—the opposite end from Las Vegas—you’ll find Elephant Rock. This unusual rock formation is one of the most famous features of the state park.

You can’t park alongside the road right at Elephant Rock. To get there, park in the east entrance parking lot. Then walk .2 miles to the elephant-shaped rock. You’ll walk back the same way you came, so this kid-friendly Valley of Fire hike is easy.

Beehives Rock Formations

One of the first things you’ll see in Valley of Fire State Park is the rock formations known as the Beehives. They got the name from the holes in the boulders left by erosion.

The Beehives is my kids’ favorite place within the state park. Can you guess why??

That’s right: My mountain goats kids love scampering up the red rocks (and generally giving all the adults heart attacks). The ridges in the rocks make great hand holds and ledges for climbing several stories up.

Camping in Valley of Fire

Here’s the most important piece of info you need about camping in Valley of Fire: There are no reservations for either of the two campgrounds. There are 72 first come, first served campsites between two campgrounds.

Here’s the exception: If you bike in, the park will not turn you away, even if campgrounds are full. Park rangers will accommodate bicyclists regardless!

Visitors can stay at the Atlatl Rock Campground and Arch Rock Campground. Both campgrounds are surrounded by the red rocks that make this Las Vegas state park famous.

Valley of Fire campgrounds include these amenities:

• Dump station for RVs
• Potable water
• Showers
• Flush toilets in restrooms
• Grills
• Picnic tables
• Shaded areas
• Fire rings (obey any fire bans or restrictions that are in effect)

Camping in Valley of Fire is not free. Per-night fees depend on several factors:

• $20/night per car for Nevada residents
• $25/night per car for out-of-state visitors
• $30/night per RV site with hookups for Nevada residents
• $35/night per RV site with hookups for out-of-state visitors

When to visit this Las Vegas state park

To be completely honest, anytime is good to visit Valley of Fire because it’s just so beautiful. In short, Valley of Fire is worth it!

The park’s red rocks are prettiest in the morning and late afternoon. This is the time when the light best brings out the vibrant colors of the stone and rock formations. Don’t forget your camera!!

Valley of Fire Weather

Since this Las Vegas state park is located in the desert, you’re right to assume the weather is overall dry and sunny. That said, weather fluctuates in this area—especially the swing from high to low temperatures.

Pay attention to weather forecasts when you visit this impressive landmark near Las Vegas. Here are the averages for Valley of Fire weather.

Spring temperatures in Valley of Fire State Park tend to be mild. In addition, this is when desert wildflowers bloom. If you visit in the spring, watch for blooming indigo bush, desert mallow and desert marigold. It’s an amazing sight to see flowers in the dry desert!

Summer is, as you can guess, very hot. It’s not uncommon for temperatures to pass 100 degrees in the summer, so plan your visit accordingly. You should hike in the morning or late afternoon to avoid peak temperatures. The sun is also incredibly strong during these months, so wear protective clothing, a hat, and sunscreen.

Fall is another wonderful time to visit. Temperatures are comfortable, and you still have plenty of sunlight during the day. (Remember, the park closes at sunset, and if you’re caught in the park after dark you could be fined.)

We have visited Valley of Fire in the winter two times. Temperatures can fluctuate quite a bit in the winter. It’s really important to wear layers! In the morning, we all bundled up in fleeces. By our afternoon Valley of Fire hiking adventures, we were in tank tops! One good thing about Valley of Fire hiking in the winter: You don’t need to worry as much about avoiding hikes in the middle of the afternoon. With the temperatures lower, you can explore all day long, rather than skipping hikes around noon.

Directions: Valley of Fire from Las Vegas

One of the best parts of visiting this amazing destination is how close it is to Las Vegas! At only an hour from the Strip, Valley of Fire is one of the best day trips from Las Vegas.

If you’re renting a car, this is easy peasy. (I do not recommend paying for a Lyft or Uber to take you. Not only will that be insanely expensive, but you will also be stranded in the park with no return ride.)

Directions to Valley of Fire from Las Vegas are straightforward.

1. Travel north on I-15N / US 93N toward Salt Lake City for a half-hour
2. Take exit 75 toward Valley of Fire / Lake Mead, onto Valley of Fire Highway
3. Travel approximately 15 minutes along Valley of Fire Highway. You will arrive at the west park entrance, where you will pay entry fees.

The last step for directions to Valley of Fire: Hit the road and go! Seriously, you won’t regret it. And if you’re anything like me, you’ll look back on these photos as one of the best things to do in Las Vegas!
